Weakness:

shuts off with power fluctuations; have to unplug and replug
to restart

Shutting off with a power fluctuation is a major handicap for this porduct; having to move equipment to access the power cord to unplug and replug the unit in order to reinitialize the unit is a major frustration; and if that doesn,t work see your service provider. This unit no longer works after 1.5 years

Strength:

picture looks great

Weakness:

load time, freezing pic, pain in the ass fast foward

I purchased this DVD player because of the good reviews it had and I felt it had the most goodies compared to the other DVD players at the time. The players has a great picture but so does any other DVD player, the Duel Disk tray tackes forever to pop out, the player takes too long to power up and I find that on some duel layered disks it tends to lock up. I have a problem with the patriot and on Stargate special edition and a few others. The remote could be set up better and the way you have to fast foward(holding down the skip button) is a pain, I dont mean to rip toshiba, just this DVD player.

Strength:

picture quality, features

Weakness:

laser problems, generates a lot of heat

bought this when it was brand new in summer '99 and it worked quite well for a year. after a year the problems started - random freezing and lockups when playing dvd's and cd's. first, the problems were quite rare and random but they got worse and nowadays the player usually freezes after 40 minutes of playing or so. sometimes just stopping ja replaying cures the problem for another 30-40 minutes or so but sometimes the player totally freezes and only solution is powering the player down and reloading the disc.

toshiba customer doesn't confirm that there are problems with sd-x109 series players and just says i'm on my own. well, don't know if its any use getting this player fixed 'cause it will break down in few months again. i opened the player up and checked out the laser pickup system - everything seemed to be okay and no visible damage or dirt was apparent on the laser. the player played one disc just fine after ive put it together again and played the disc with the cover off but then the problems came back. it seems that just fiddling around with the spindle fixes the problems for a while but then they re-appear ? anything - anyone ? if anyone has any solutions for the problem please let me know.

Strength:

digital audio out, number of output choices

Weakness:

no cdr capability, see below for rest

This was my first purchase of a dvd player, so I spent a little time looking into it. I finally settled on this model based on the number of features and the great price at the time. It has operated pretty well up to now, apart from the slow response to commands from the remote. Now however, for some reason it will no longer play my special edition copy of Gladiator, or the special features disc that came with it. I think it must be something with the laser alignment that keeps it from reading these. My other discs still work. I am also disappointed that it does not read cdrs, but toshiba never claimed it would so what can I expect. Other than that, never had any problems with video, and listening to cds through the optical out to my Pioneer Elite VSX-37 is like listening to them for the first time. I know this is mostly due to the quality of my receiver, but "garbage in, garbage out", as the saying goes. Anyway, it's probably time to upgrade to newer technology, so this will wind up in the bedroom. It was good for starters.

Weakness:

Worthless Dual Tray Set Up; Takes Forever To Load A Disc.

I've always enjoyed Toshiba products, but this DVD, although reliable, has been a pain in the butt. The Dual Tray set up opens and closes, clicks and clunks, always searching for a disc that isn't there. The load up procedure seems to take forever. DVD's take long enough to start with the cursory FBI warnings and previews, and the time it takes this thing to even load the disc makes it even more unrewarding. I have no one to blame for myself for even thinking that a Dual-Tray might be something worthwhile. A viewer can only watch one movie at a time; with the rare exception of the two DVD movie out there, this feature actually detracts from the home theatre experience. I've got an APEX 600A in the bedroom, and even after reading the horrible reviews it has earned, my Apex has never misbehaved and is every bit the equal in sound and picture of this over priced Toshiba.

Strength:

Wonderful color saturation, lack of noticable artifacts, HDCD compatible..

Weakness:

Flimsy tray, lightweight design.

The review below is classic. You get one bad 3109 and suddenly Toshiba should be out of business. I've used this player for a few years now and never had ONE single problem. It's fantastic. I plan on upgrading soon, and would love to stick with Toshiba. One of the most well respected companies producing DVD players out there currently. The 5109,6200 and 9200 are all very high quality players. Well, let's just hope you don't have a bad experience with a woman, that would leave you with a choice between men...and goat's. Enjoy! Baaaaa.....

Strength:

Consistant Performer

Weakness:

Sometimes I have to insert the disk twice for it to recognize the DVD. It also freezes up for a split second once on every movie.

Overall this is a good DVD player loaded with a lot of features for a good price at the original time of purchase.
However, I am slightly nervous based on a lot of the reviews that I may have problems with this unit down the road.
