Harris, where did you get the notion that the Toshiba 3109 can play non-region 1 DVD's? All DVD players sold in the US can only play region 1 DVD's unless they have been modified by the end user, which voids the warranty. I believe the only exceptions are early versions of the Sony 7000 which had a dip switch that let you change the region of the player.

good for ht, but the music sucks, HDCD cant be felt at all, by the way i did not get any 10% off at 800.com. Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.........cant do anything about that. overall the buld quality is not that good, hate the beep sound that it makes when you press any button. well...good buy for ht, but you really need another cdplayer if you wnat good quality cd playback. 4 for ht and 2 for music

I just love this player. Watched the Mask of Zorro and the sound and picture quality were superb. Yeah, the remote sucks but we've all heard that before so I won't harp on it.
BTW, I didn't receive the 5 free DVD coupon with the unit. Anyone know where I can print it off?? It's almost impossible getting to talk to anyone at the Tosh Customer Care number.

Purchased from www.proactiveelectronics.com for $357 which included shipping. For those with older TVs (like me) without RCA or s-video inputs, be aware that new DVDs come with Macromedia copy protection which prevents piping through your VCR. A "video stablilizer" - try e-bay - is required in this case.

Ok, I finally got this baby! It cooks, Period! I have this hooked up to my Kenwood VR-2090, Mitz 35" TV, Bose front and rear and Klipsch Center and SUB! WOW!!! The features are great, my wife actually agreed with this purchase!!!! I got it at www.800.com for 399/no shipping fees AND $75 worth of free DVD movies! Yea better prices on the player but no shippng and free dvd's...best deal around in my opinion! So if you're wondering/hesitating on this player...don't! I didn't even need the decoder (my 2090 does it), but It's worth it for the dual disc tray, DTS, HDCD and all the gadgets. And the best part, don't have to mess with the remote cause my 2090 does everything but clean the dishing for me! (Some hate the remote but I love it...doesn't clutter up my wife's ooopps, our table! :) Anyway, this review isn't about the 2090, but the 3109 so back to it. The best thing abou this player...the price! To get into HDCD you need to spend A LOT MORE in Denon or others...not worth it. Happy DVDing. 5+ STARS

I've been researching DVD Players for awhile and am almost sold on the Toshiba 3109 - Tons of great reviews - about as good as the Sony 550. I've tested CDRs on this machine with no luck, but I'll just buy a dedicated CD player for that. I've got a question...I found this player for $316 at Computersbynet.com - includes shipping. Since the coupon for 800.com seems to have expired, this seems like a better deal. I save 85 dollars and can use that to buy $85 dollars of DVDs locally (or pocket the money). My question - has anyone dealt with Computersbynet.com? The price seems a bit better than 800.com and I should still be able to get the five free movies using the mail in form.

Please email me with your comments (glenn@bmc.com or ybrew@insync.net).
Based on the reviews I've read and everything else I've read on the Toshiba, I've giving it 5 stars.

Wanted to thank Surge for posting the 800.com coupon link. I just picked up the Toshiba SD-3109 to replace a Sony SDP530 I recently picked up for $379 + tax.
The total for the Toshiba and four movies came to $363 incl. shipping and tax. What a deal! And it should be a step up from the Sony based on the research I've done.

Strength:

pretty good quality of picture and sound

Weakness:

sometimes it takes awhile to read cd/vcd/dvd (laser not output right power??)

It is frustrated when you have newer technolgy like CDR and CDRW kick in. And, now you have to know which exact brand of cd/cdrw you need to buy in order to work for your DVD player. This player is pretty picky on this. Be aware of the player you will buy if you will play cdr/cdrw in your player. Do research before you purchase the player.

Strength:

Great picture. Reliable playback. excellent sound!

Weakness:

Remote control... dual tray not that useful.

I'm very happy with this unit. Have used it over a year and have had no problems as noted by other reviewers.

I got a good one apparently.

A reliable unit at a decent price if you shop around.

Strength:

Realiable, great quality, abundant features, dual-tray

Weakness:

Quirky search functions on the remote. Only basic buttons on the unit itself.

Im submitting this review to give an update on this unit after over a year of use.
We have loved this unit from the very start. Admittedly, one of the reasons I picked this unit was because, at the time, it was one of the of the few units to have component outputs (hence the reason I payed so much, it was still vey new). Another reason was the dual tray. Being a new dad, the dual tray is a BIG help cause it means I always have a cartoon ready to go for my son while my wife and I have a movie in there. Also the dual tray helps to keep the unit SHALLOW. DVD carousel players are much deeper in order to get all the DVDs on one tray. Units like this one are able to fit in tighter areas. While Im talking about the dual tray, I want to address Gary Merchant's review below. He writes: "The Dual Tray set up opens and closes, clicks and clunks, always searching for a disc that isn't there. The load up procedure seems to take forever." In my opinion, based on my own player and ones Ive seen in the store, Gary is experiencing a unique problem and should have his uit serviced. Ours operates without a hitch and doesn't go searching for disks that arent there. There is a pause as the disk loads but I assure you this is nothing different than what other brands do.
The 3109 has a great setup interface. It makes configuring this untit a pleasure. I have the unit hooked up to my Pioneer VSX-35TX and the sound is amazing. This unit has been able to handle ALL DVDs without any problem, including The Matrix and Gladiator.
I dont know if you can find this unit out there still. I imagine that if you do it will probably be a lot cheaper than what we got it for. But then again, we got it when it was still a fairly new model in the Toshiba line. If you do see it, you may want to give it serious consideration. I think you'll be pleased.
