Strength:

HDCD, Dolby Digital and DTS decoders, Coax and Optical outputs and most of all picture and sound quality.

Weakness:

Can't find any

I was in the market for a DVD player in the $500(cnd.)range and every salesperson I saw recomended the 2200. I had already done a little research on what is possible to get in this range and what accesorys I need to fully enjoy a movie, and this DVD had it all. I had some expieriance with DVD players by playing around with the ones at the store and when ever I went to my uncles, but I had no idea what was possible. Just out of curriosity I put in a DVD and the the same movie which I had on tape, timed it so they played the same scene at the same time and with the press of a button I could switch between the two. I was blown away with the difference in picture quality. I had no idea how dramatic a difference their was.

I could go either way with the two disc tray, it's neat, that's about it, the DTS and DD decoders are great to have but I already have both on my reciever. I love the fact that it has both optical and coax connections, alowing me greater fexibility with my other digital equitment. My only pet peave is with the remote. Don't get me wrong, it's great but to have so few buttons hidden under the flip open panel is pointless.

I highly recomened this product to any one looking for a DVD player with excelent quality and the price of something half as good.

Strength:

Decent Audio, but not Stellar like the Onkyo I compared it to in-home. Fine menu system. Zoom is useful sometimes, but anything above Zoom1 is over-pixelated. The build is in the middle-range as far as feel is concerned. Not high quality, but not cheap feeling either. Remote is one of the best out there for ease of use and functionality. Onkyo's remote sux.

Weakness:

The HDCD is overrated. Toshiba is pushing this big, but DON'T feel you need it -- you don't. If you are this concerned about quality audio at this price point, then pony up an additional $50 for an EXCELLENT Onkyo single-disc player. It doesn't have HDCD, but Onkyo's DVD products sound better. Trust me -- I demo'ed their DV-C600 against the 2200 at home, and the Toshiba HDCD seemed to open the dynamic range SLIGHTLY, but the audio from the Toshiba DAC's is brittle and less alive than the Onkyo. All adding HDCD does is give you a SLIGHTLY wider range for the audio to be brittle over.

First off, I'm not here to trash the Toshiba player. It is an excellent machine, but if you are thinking of spending another $40 to get this 2-tray 2200 model because it has HDCD, instead of the 1200 or 1600 model -- don't bother. Get the lower-priced models and you'll be very happy.

Due to a recent internet purchase of a Refurbished Onkyo DVD player, I was afforded the lucky opportunity to demo both of these against each other in my home. I have no allegiance to Onkyo (actually, I went into this being biased towards the Toshiba's highly-touted HDCD). I was shocked to find that the Toshiba didn't sound as good as my Onkyo, which is sans-HDCD -- no matter what kind of disc played.

Also, I wrongly assumed that if I used the digital COAX out from both machines, they should sound the same, since my reciever would do the decoding. WRONG! The Onkyo proved to have a warmer, richer sound that reaches out and touches you. The Toshiba's is very good also, however it just doesn't seem as real as the Onkyo. I also tried the Toshiba 2200 through all of the outputs -- RCA's, 5.1's --each time with the same results. (Keep in mind, you have to be using the Toshiba's on-board DAC to make use of HDCD anyway. If you use direct digital out, you bypass HDCD all together)! I picked up a tiny (noticed it at higher volumes) bit more hiss from using the Toshiba to do the decoding instead of the digital out. So in my assessment, it would be stupid to use the on-board HDCD anyway.

Bottom line -- if you are tearing yourself apart you have to buy the Toshiba to get HDCD, please let me ease your suffering -- it's not worth it. You'd be better off buying Onkyo's single disc player for a little over $300 -- the sound will blow you away. Now that is a QUALITY machine. Check out the reviews here. And the features are identical to the Toshiba's, because Onkyo uses Toshiba internals for the video side. BUT the audio quality is a step above.

Refurbished Onkyo DV-C600 DVD Disc Changer I got for $252! Keep in mind that Onkyo video is IDENTICAL to Toshiba, including menus. But audio on the Onkyo is warmer, richer and fuller -- due to better disc transport I'd assume.

Strength:

Dual trays for continuous cd music (great for parties or sampling music with friends), exteremely quiet and fast operation, fiber and coax digital output, picture, sound.

Weakness:

Haven't found any yet

Zoom is crystal clear, not pixelated at all like one reviewer stated.

Remote is fine, I don't have any problems at all with it. The toggle for selecting menu options is VERY easy to use!

Great picture, great sound, great price! Thanks to another reviewer that mentioned it being sold on mercata.com - I feel I got a great deal getting it for $233 delivered.

Purchased the SD-2200 and a Sony STR-DE945 110W per channel DTS and DD receiver two weeks ago, they rock the house with my Definitive Technology sub, Klipsch KG 3 mains, and Boston Acoustics center channel, old Marantz main speakers for surrounds. Saving Private Ryan on DTS is jaw dropping, far superior to the more compressed sounding Dolby Digital version of it... its like you are AT Omaha beach with the soldiers. Super Speedway in Dolby Digital is incredible sounding also - Mario and Michael Andretti.

You can't go wrong with this unit!

I previously used the Phillips 825AT which was absolutely perfect, besides the fact that it hung at layer switch. And I used the Toshiba SD6109C which I absolutely loved except for the fact that you could not open the DVD tray without switching the receiver to DVD (cutting off what you're watching). Also it annoyed me that I spent $200 extra on my Satellite receiver when the Toshiba Receiver had no DD/DTS inputs (why need them the DVD is built-in).

And now I'm using the Toshiba SD2200 and I love it. The Dual trays are a great idea. Sometimes you get confused at what is in which tray, but thats like crying about forgetting which limousine you're riding in today.

Strength:

great picture!

This DVD player is excellent for the money. Some say the remote is difficult, but with a little experience it is actually simple to operate. I have noting bad to say about this player. It plays disks like The Matrix and Saving Private Ryan (DTS) without a hitch. Highly recommended.

Strength:

good value

Weakness:

remote joystick awkward.

This player seems to have about everything one could want in a dvd player (minus progressive scan) for a pretty low cost. The picture quality is good, and its interface is relatively intuitive.

The only grips I have so far is the same as Jeff Taylor's review below (remote joystick 'misses' some presses) and
that you have to STOP the playback before changing video modes (4:3 to 16:9).

Strength:

Very good picture and sound quality. Can play old video CD such as twister without problem. Sound better than regualar CD player.

Weakness:

Does not come with digital cables

I bought the Panasonic VR30 first. The Panasonic only play 1 disc and only have optical digital output. It cost $249 from Circuit City without a dolby digital decoder. It could not play my old video CD "Twister" properly ( freeze frames). It returned it to the store.

I came by Sam's Club and pick up the Toshiba 2200. It cost the same as the Panasonic. It play 2 disc and have build in dolby digital decoder. I played my video CD without any freeze frame. It was so smooth. It play music CD better than my new CD player. Also I bought a DVD "Soldiers of Fortune" from Fry's Electronics. It play very well with good pictures and sound. However the DVD "Soldiers of Fortune" is crap movie. Don't buy that title even though it is cheap $6.99.

none so far

This thing rocks. I hooked this up with my Denon avr-1801 and my Polk RM-6600 speakers. The sound is awesome. the picture is nice and clear. Played Saving Private Ryan in DTS. The scenes where everyone is shooting is nuts. It sounded like I was freaking in the battle. I recommend these for anyone. You won't be disappointed. Trust Me !!!!!
