Strength:

Component Video Outs, DTS, Picture Quality

Weakness:

Non-Universal Remote, No Optical out, Plasy Analog Audio a little weak but could just be DVDs

This is an excellent DVD Player for the money. I have mine connected to a Toshiba CX32H60 TV via the component video connections and the picture is unreal. I can not comment on the digital audio yet as that is my next upgrade to purchase a Home Theatre. The analog audio through the TV seams like it is weaker than both my satellite receiver or VCR, but I just have to turn it up a little higher, and I don't find myself adjusting the audio as much as I do with the sattelie and VCR which is a plus when watching movies. I don't have a problem with the remote. After you memorize where the buttons are it is good. The buttons could be a little bigger, but I like the small size of the remote. The picture looked great with the S-Video connection, but it looks even better with the component video. I will post later on the quality of the Dolby Digital and DTS when I get my home theater in a couple of months.

Just brought the unit home last week. First impressions include smaller remote than the Toshiba 2108 that it replaced. However, the unit is more solidly built, has a deeper bass (through digital outs to my Angstrom 100 pre/pro) and has a classier look. The video and audio performance is stunning, both on CD and DVD playback. Picture quality is superb. I don't see how one could justify $1100 for a Sony 7700 when this product is available at $299 retail.
Took advantage of United Audio's 90-day trade-in policy to replace my 2108. A great product at a super price!

Obtaining this player was a headache and a half! Up until 5 days ago, I owned a Pansonic DVD-A110 which I bought based purely on reviews 5 months ago. It was good. The 2109 is better.
I originally ordered the 2109 from buyvideos.com ($249) but when I read all the bad press about them and how they might not even receive shipment from Toshiba because of "too low prices," I cancelled my order. I was able to get the 2109 for $293 from Onecall.com and it arrived yesterday after only a 2 day wait.

THE GOOD... The unit was packed beautifully and efficiently (there wasn't sixteen pounds of styrofoam for something that weighs 2 1/2 pounds!). Inside the box was a TON of promotional stuff including: a $10 coupon at dvdexpress.com, a $20 coupon at Reel.com, 15 Free DVD Rentals from netflix.com, and 5 free DVDs from Warner Bros/NewLine! WHOA! Things were looking good! Also, the manual was quite good and very well written with plenty of visuals. Thumbs up!

I slipped it out of its bag and was pleasantly surprised to find the 2109 had been aesthetically revamped (slighly) from the 2108 to create a very sleek, simpler look. A very sharp unit! One thing, the disc tray is now above the LED display-FYI. The unit is solid black with only a FEW buttons on the faceplate. After connecting it to my HarmanKardon AVR75 DD receiver (via digital coax cable, the 2109 does NOT have Optical outputs) and then to my 32" Sony direct-view TV via S-Video, I was ready to give it a whirl. And whirl it did!

The picture quality on the 2109 was outstanding! The first disc I demo'ed was Mask of Zorro because it has an exceptional transfer of both audio and video. The 2109 delivered on both. The colors were extremely vibrant and there was virtually NO jitter nor artifacts. The sound was also great, but it's hard to say how much of that is due to the player and how much is due to my HK receiver and Energy XL speakers all around. Regardless, no complaints in the A/V Dept.
I was also impressed with the 2109's Zoom feature which lets you zoom in to portions of the screen and toggle the zoom's perspective. Cool! I'm awaiting Video Essentials on DVD to arrive (I rented it free from Netflix) and I then hope to calibrate my A/V properly even FURTHER improving the 2109's capacity!

ALSO, my biggest problem with the A110 was layer changes! It would occasionally skip an entire track right at the layer change and I can't tell you how annoying THAT was! Zorro ALWAYS skipped on my A110. The 2109-NO PROBLEM and a QUICK change at that. That reminds me-the 2109 is a FAST machine. Menus and layer changes are MUCh faster than the A110!!!

THE BAD... Minor things. First off, as most people have heard, the 2109 has a pretty crappy remote. The buttons are ALL small and very close together and it is NOT backlit. Also, the main buttons (play, pause, etc) are on the BOTTOM of the remote whereas the top would be more natural (for me at least). Also, the unit is LIGHT and I always worry when something is that light. Pick up a Sony or Denon DVD player and you'd think it was carrying bricks! Lastly, the Optical output would have been nice since I had a toslink cable already. No idea why Toshiba decided to cut it out when its predecessor, the 2108 had it.

The verdict: for under $300 it is a STEAL! Great performance and a sleek design. I give it a 4.25/5, docking the .75 for the crappy remote.

I purchased this DVD last Sunday. Already watched 7 movies. Picture quality is excellent. I have connected this DVD to my Hitachi 60 inch projection TV using SVHS.Digital audio is connected to Kenwood VR209 dolby Digital receiver. Sound reproduction is excellent. I can really feel that I was sitting in a theater. Dolby Digital is great. I was worried about sound quality withoud Optical audio output. But digital audio is great. I was having difficulty in finding excellent quality digital coax cable, 20 feet long. But I found one from a dealer in Newyork and is working great. I strongly recommend this DVD. I bought from Sears. This weekend sears is having additional 10% off. So if you are interested you can get Toshiba 2109 dvd for $269.00 Not a bad deal. No more Audio drop out. Thanks Toshiba.

I have had my toshiba sd-2109 for about a week now and I can't say enough about this player. The picture is superb! Playing the Lost in Space dvd was awesome!
But what I am most suprised about is the audio quality on my cd's. The sound is
very good. It actually sounds alot better than my old cd only player. So far I have only played about three dvd movies but all are flawless when played through this player. And for the price of $250.00 it was a steal. And why pay anymore for a top end model when the new dvd audio(universal) machines are only a year away! I can enjoy great picture quality now and if I need to upgrade in a year, I will have the satisfaction of knowing I did not break the bank to upgrade.

Strength:

Component video outputs.

Weakness:

Buttons on remote control are too small.

I received an Emerson (sp?) DVD-2000 as a birthday present (I wouldn't mind writing a review of the aforementioned unit!) which I exchanged for the Toshiba SD-2109. I'm glad I did! Before getting the Toshiba unit, I read the reviews posted by many users in these forums. I was trying to decide between the Panasonic A120U and the Toshiba SD-2109. What made up my mind was the fact that the reviews for the Toshiba unit outnumber those of the Panasonic by about four times the number, with the Toshiba getting a more favorable review.

Anyway, unlike the Emerson unit, the 2109 hasn't shown any problems with dual-layer DVDs. The Emerson was faster at switching dual layer discs, but it was tremendously flawed in its playback! 'Saving Private Ryan' wouldn't play for more than 10-30 seconds past chapter 13. No such problems with the 2109! I've connected the unit to a Panasonic CT32XF56 using the player's component video output. I'm not sure if it's my imagination or what, but the picture looks sharper than the S-VHS connection. Of course, I've setup the TV for 16x9 mode as well as the DVD player, so 'The Matrix' and 'Aliens: Special Edition' definitely look better! Unfortunately, I am in the beginning stages of building a home theater system, so I have not connected the player to a surround sound system.

To finish, I have to say that like a lot of reviewers before me, I find the remote control's tiny buttons cumbersome. Other than that, I like this player and hope that it will give this beginner home theater enthusiast lots of years of great service...

Strength:

Nice remote, picture, price and awsome sound on movies!

Weakness:

There IS a very noticable sound when playing CD's ... you can hear the motor whirring on quiet passages. Is silent on DVD though.

Have owned this for six months now and am very impressed ... as much with DVD as a whole rather than this player in isolation.

I run this DVD using RGB out (much better than composite) into a 32" nicam Sony and love the picture.

Sound goes through a Yamaha RXV795 which can be had for £350 these days ... and it is this that makes the DVD experience come alive.

My recomendation would be to buy a £200 DVD player rather than a £4-500 one and plough the rest into a £3-400 Digital reciever.

I am very happy with the whole system ... there are probably better players than the 2109 to be had now but even at £230 I have no complaints other than that niggle about the motor noise on CD's

Finally a few tips if you are starting from scratch:
1. Buy a widescreen TV just a Nicam not a prologic... SONY Wega 32" are in COSTCO for a grand now!!
2. Buy a £200ish DVD player
3. Use the money saved on the DVD (compared to a £400 SONY DVD) and the £200 saved by not getting a TV with Prologic to buy a DTS/Digital amp.
4. Sit back and enjoy.

Make sure your DVD has RGB output ... my brother bought a panasonic that just has S-video and can't get S-video in anthing other than Black and White on his 29" Sony telly so has to make do with composite.

PS...does anyone know if there is much difference in sound between using an optical out and a co-axial out?

Strength:

Best Picture/$, Digital Coax Out, component and S-video out Made in Japan

Weakness:

Won't play CD-R/RW, Remote is inefficient, no optical Digital out

For $234 inc tax this is def the best picture for the money - period. You would have to go to Tosh's SD9000 progressive scan model for 2 to 3 times the money for a better picture.
The sound is up there with the best when using coax digital output which I would highly recommend. But not so good with the analog outputs which are still better than average though. I'm using Arcam 10 DAVE processor which has high quality DACs and it sounds awsome though my Mission 774's and 77c HT. BTW - Don't waste your money on a dedicated coax cable from the likes of Monster for upwards of $40. A plain cheap and relatively short as possible phono interconnect works just fine for the approx 1 Mbps bitstream transmitted. You might hear the difference on your CDs only if you compare this cheap interconnect with a high quality dedicated coax cable meant for the job - but I say save your money and use cheap short interconnect or make your own using quality raw materials from Radioshack at a fraction of the cost.
Now the remote - absolute garbage. Numerous times I found I had to hit a button several times to get any action. However, most HT buffs will already have a programmable remote that comes with their Amp/processor set up and my Arcam's remote works perfectly with the Tosh DVD which luckily has standard remote button layout. I have no problem's with disc noise - very quiet unlike the Pioneer 525 DVD player which is not made in Japan!
As other's have said, why pay more while DVD format is still sorting itself out. For under $250 this will keep me very happy till recordable DVD-audio comes along and becomes affordable.
Summary - Most suductive DVD player for the money!
