Strength:

Price, picture, sound

Weakness:

Could use a better remote, but thats nitpicking.

Nailed this player on ebay, BRAND NEW (unopened) for $209 :-) I had previously had 2 different PC DVD players but this was my first stand alone player. What can I say? Awesome picture, awesome sound and a total steal for the price I got it. CNet shooper.com reports an internet low price of $217, so pick this one up NOW!@!

Strength:

Definetly Picture, Blacker then Black Option, GUI, Sound, quiet operation.

Weakness:

Can't read CD-R, but unless you use pirate software it's not a problem at all...

I bought it as a Christmas present, and frankly this is probably the best use of the money I had for a long time: I did a long research before I bought this unit and it paid off. The two other runner up where Pioneer 525 and Panasonic 120. While Panasonic has much softer picture (bad thing, since you can’t make it shaper), Pioneer was a pretty loud machine, plus they both run about $50 more...
Now about my Toshiba unit. Right from the beginning I've noticed how sharp and clear the picture is, I even lowered the sharpness level on my TV set, and Oh Boy I got a picture on pair with high end DVD players. I personally love Black Expansion feature (which of cause you can turn off), it passes blacker then black signal, thus for example your bars on top and bottom became totally black, and while watching a movie it appears as though I have a Widescreen TV :) Meanwhile it doesn't affect the brightness, so you get deep black, and bright colors in the same time. The menu is terrific, as well as the actual look of the player. The sound player produced is even better then my PC DVD set up. Although I only have ProLogic system, even switching to Toshiba player, made a very audible difference, most importantly, center channel became very clear, and the whole Video/Audio experience became greater even after having PC DVD setup.
Sure there some weaknesses that this machine has, otherwise it wouldn't cost what it is, but for the money you pay it's an ultimate DVD player.
(As for the remote, it's not that bad, besides I have a nice Backlit universal remote, and any home theater enthusiast will have one anyways. Absence of a Digital Optical is no problem either, Digital Coaxial is better audio carrier anyway, plus coaxial cable is less expensive and while EVERY DD receiver has coaxial, not all have optical inputs.)

Strength:

inexpensive, s-video output

Weakness:

remote, firmware??

The player has a lot of nice features for the price. The one thing I've noticed with it is that it tends to skip or stop at the same chapters when viewing certain movies (like Armageddon, The Mummy, etc). Is this caused by a firmware problem or the DVD? Ony because I've tried someone elses Armageddon DVD and it did the same thing! It looks like a few people are experiencing the same thing upon reading the reviews. Is Tosiba to blame or the DVD?? It gets irritating when you have to look for the remote in the dark when the player decides to pull this. I will give this player a 5 for value but only a 3 for an overall rating because of the above problem and the Remote it came with.

Strength:

Excellent audio and video quality; user-friendly menu system; great overall value.

Weakness:

Definitely the remote; perhaps the missing optical output

I bought my 2109 in May of this past year for about $280. Honestly, I was a bit skeptical about purchasing such an inexpensive piece of NEW video equipment, but that hypothesis soon proved itself wrong.

I've had absolutely no problems with it. The audio-CD playback is surprisingly good; from what I've heard many budget DVD players fall behind in this area (Pioneer, especially, i've heard). But more importantly, DVD playback is exceptional. The video is crisp and defined, with an option to boost the black level (which appeals to me). Because I do not have a 5.1 system, I cannot comment on the multi-channel audio playback of DVDs, but I can tell you that the mock-surround option for two-speaker systems is great -- it really does seem like there is an extra pair of speakers!

The remote, however, is hardly adequate, but remember how inexpensive this whole package is. The remote gets easier -- NOT easy, though -- to use as time goes by, but nonetheless it could be better. If you're really concerned about the remote, buy a universal or call Toshiba and get a deluxe model (which comes with the 3109) for about $40.

Compared to its Panasonic and Pioneer counterparts, I'd say that it has a bit of an edge. The video seems to be somewhat superior, but that's just me (a very picky person); the remote inferior. Also -- if this means anything -- Toshiba was on its fourth-generation of DVD players before Panasonic was on their third (as was the case with Pioneer, I believe).

Anyway, hope this helped. It's a great value, and a great product built by a respectable brand.

Strength:

great picture, sound and price

Weakness:

remote

I really love this dvd player. Sound and picture are fantastic and for the price it's a great deal. The remote isn't too good, but I can definitely live with it. I have virtually no dvd problems after about 40 different titles.. only small skipping problems on Elizabeth and Gingerbread Man (both rentals, they may have just been dirty). I'm very happy with my purchase.

Strength:

Zoom feature, easy to use, never had layer switching problems, smells awesome.

Weakness:

To my knowledge there is no reverse slo-motion or reverse Playback at regular speeds. If anyone knows of any way to do this please tell me.

I enjoy the product quite a bit, but have not been able to play backwards in Slo-Mo or at normal speed. These may not be features, but I was hoping they were. I have watched over 20 DVD since purchasing the player in November 99 and have not single problem even though I know people with different models that have with identical movies.

Strength:

Awesome price for the features. DTS and Dolby Digital out, ColorStream components, just plain high-quality player for the money. Toshiba does not make inferior video products in my experience.

Weakness:

Only weakness is occasional pixelation in high-data portions of DVD movies. This rarely shows up, so it should not really be a concern.

This player is an awesome deal for the money, and online with coupons can many times be had for under $200. Just look, you'll find your bargain. Check out online forums too, such as this one. This is a great overall player with high performance components and video output is great from what I've seen. The best bang for your buck in my opinion, but don't take my word for it, buy one for yourself.

Seen other nice DVD players, this one looks just as good if not better.
