Strength:

Quality player for a very reasonable price!

Weakness:

Won't play VCDs.

I looked to this website for guidance a year ago, and I'm not disappointed with what I bought. The 2109 gives me a great picture, good sound (could be better if I bought better speakers), and incredible value. I have not experienced ANY of the pixelization, popping, freezing, or skipping problems reported by other DVD users. The first DVD I played was the Matrix (like everyone else, right?) and I noticed no problems whatsoever. The only possible problem I've experienced has been with my Monty Python DVDs (no sound), but this could be the disc, and it's easily solved by stopping and restarting the disc (this only happened twice). I also wish it could play VCDs, but I have a DVD-ROM on my computer for that, so it's not a huge deal. I paid only about $225 for the unit from Vanns.com back last November (at the time I got free shipping), so I think I got a good deal. Got the five free discs with that, too. I have friends who have a Proscan and probably paid just a bit less, and I couldn't watch the Matrix straight through without having it stop and start over a few times. I have the 2109 hooked up to an Onkyo receiver with Tributary digital audio cable (again, a pity I don't have new speakers), and a Toshiba 32" with Monster component video cables (the picture is incredible). The remote is small, but I don't overuse the special features (like zoom and pan), so I just use my universal remote. I was so happy with my unit, I bought one for my parents, and they haven't had any complaints either. Definitely a worthwhile purchase...I'm glad I checked here first!

Strength:

great picture and sound zoom mode

Weakness:

remote buttons small no back lite.

Though I did a ton of research and looked at lots of dvd players I settled on the toshiba2109. the technology of the colorstream inputs and the 4x zoom. were some of the great hooks for me. I didnt care that it didnt have optical output as this is really a techno hype point than really a usefull feature. I have mine hooked to my Yamaha 795a and I love it after having dvd in my computer for 2 years I got the 2109 for less than $150.00 and it works great. I have not seen any of the other negative things described in this column. And I write those off to either people expecting too much or not being able to use it properly or having it hooked up wrong or to inferior decoders or monitors. I am using the s-video hook up now and the picture is great. Good color and detail, no moire and the zoom is really a useful feature especially for adult movies.LOL. I got used to the remote rather quickly but it would be nice to have larger more defined buttons what do you want for less than $200? I have seen this unit priced at less than 180 on 800.com and it is well worth it. I have not tried to use recorded cd romson it so I dont know if it is a problem. I will check it out and see if it is just from earlier units. What can I say I love DVD and cant get enough.

Strength:

Price , Features , Simple to use..

Weakness:

Small Remote Buttons , won't play CDR's

I got it at Best Buy about 6 months ago and now it's been replaced by the SD1200 so big deal I'm sure that there are not any differences between them just the numbers maybe a new face. I love the Zoom feature it help on those 16X9 widescreen movies just hit setup button twice and the zoom1 will go away , picture is excellent and so is the sound and ease of use makes it a great buy. I have had no problems what so ever with it, Just read the other reviews here and like me you will go out and get one .......
Enjoy

Remote not being back lit. No digital optical feed to TV

Bought from etown for $190, free shipping and 15 free rentals from NetFlix. Great deal! No issues, I like Toshiba products. Remote is a hassle in the dark and after a few drinks. The optical feed was not a concern because my Toshiba TV did not have a receptor anyway. I plan to upgrade to higher end Toshiba player when I upgrade the TV and give this unit to the kids, so this fit my needs perfectly for now at a great price.

Price, features, video and sound quality

Weakness:

only digital output is coaxial, uhhhh...boring screen saver

It's all been said. This unit is a very nice player for under $250. I got it for $280 about 8 months ago. I have it hooked up using component video to a color stream Toshiba 27" and the color is very nice. A little better than s-video. Alot of receivers only have 1 coax input and 3 or more optical inputs, so if you have another coax unit (kenwood cd changers only had coax when i was looking for a cd changer) then you might want different DVD model. The zoom feature is handy. I'm sure this has all been said in the other 250 reviews, but i dont feel like reading all of them just so my review isn't repetitive. Oh ya, the Integra DVD player i was looking at was $599 and was almost identical to this player.

Strength:

Price, Component Video outputs, DTS

Weakness:

See below

This is a great "entry level" DVD player. I got it so that I could start building my collection of DVDs with the intent of getting a progressive scan player in the future. I have noticed some anomolies when playing certain titles. For example, "The Best Man" locked up in one spot on one occasion. And in "Shakespeare In Love", there is a scene where the camera pans by a railing causing a strange pattern to appear. Other than that, though, I cannot complain. I am using the component video outputs to my Toshiba CZ27V51 TV.

Strength:

Excellent Picture and Sound Quality

Weakness:

Shatty remote

Sony, Panasonic and Pioneer do NOT compete in the entry-level category with Toshiba's SD2109. Never had a problem, yet, with pixelation or lip-synch like I did with Sony. I am extremely picky and love to find something wrong with my stuff. Fortunately, I have not found a single problem with my player yet. I plan on upgrading soon, but I am a little reluctant to leave this excellent DVD player!

The ONLY thing I hate about this thing is the SHATTY remote control. But that's it.

That god-awful remote

This is my first DVD player, and I haven't had a single problem with it. Setup isn't complicated at all, the hardest part was shelling out $40 for an S-Video cable. The unit is very light in weight, almost to the point of feeling cheap. It's played every movie I've thrown at it without a hitch. The only downfall that I can see, is the ridiculous remote control. It's far too small, with tiny buttons and an unintuitive layout.

Strength:

Features for price, design/looks

Weakness:

No VCD support, no optical digital audio out

Overall, I think this is a fantastic DVD player for the money. The only other players I found that were comparable in features and quality were the Pioneer and Toshiba mentioned above.
I decided on the 2109 over the 1200 merely because it was at an open box sale at a store for only $179, vs the $229 they were asking for the 1200. It is my recollection that the only real difference between the two is the VCD support. Other than that, I couldn't discern any quality or function differences.
I chose the Toshiba over the Pioneer because of the looks. The Pioneer looks very "plastic and cheap", whereas the Toshiba at least looks a little more high end.
I knew I was going to be using a Coax digital out, so I wasn't too concerned about the lack of optical outs.
All in all, this is a very good unit and I highly recommend it to the entry level home theater buff.

Strength:

Picture quality

Weakness:

Remote

Even though this is my first DVD player I am completely satisfied with it. The picture is great, the sound is spectacular, and the conversion is good. I have no complaints except for the remote. People watch movies in the dark, not with all the lights on! This is the only problem that I can find with this player. For the money spent I feel that I got a steal. I recommended this player to my brother and he bought it, and loves it also. Buy one today and enjoy.
