Strength:

The price is super attractive and so is the look of this sleek model. The picture and sound output is top notch.

Weakness:

Small Remote Control.

This is a great DVD player. I've had it for over a year and everything is still great. Toshiba is one of three companies that started DVD with Sony and Panasonic being the others. But it was the price that was most enticing. It is the cheapest of the three but still packs a punch.
It was a great investment!

My first DVD player was a Zenith but did not fair well at all. I had to get rid of it two days later!!!! I suspect it needed a lens realignment and also because Zenith products aren't as good as many think.

ATTENSION EVERYBODY WHO REVIEWED THIS PRODUCT!!!!!

People keep on saying this unit has "excellent audio",
and they all connect the unit digitally to their receivers.

Are you all idiots or what?? Once you connect any component digitally to the other one, like in this case where you connect the DVD to the receiver, the DVD does no longer do ANY sound processing whatsoever. The receiver does all of the sound work. This is true UNLESS you use the analogue outputs.
Now I see all of you mension using the DIGITAL outputs, so stop saying this unit has excellent sound!! Maybe it does, but the sound you're hearing has nothing to do with the DVD but rather with your receivers - and each and every one of you has a different receiver. You are misleading people.

I also read someone wrote that playing CDs on this unit sounds bad. He used the digital output. What this means is that his receiver does a bad job in converting digital to analogue. People here really don't get the way things work.

IF YOU USE THE DIGITAL OUTPUT - then your receiver does all sound processing. Whether it sounds good or bad - your receiver is responsible for that AND NOT the DVD player.

IF YOU USE THE ANALOG OUTPUT - your DVD is really responsible for the sound you're hearing.

People also think that Digital connections are always MUCH BETTER than analog connections. This again depends on the case. If you use a 800$ DVD and a 400$ receiver, then I tell you: CONNECT IT WITH THE ANALOG OUTPUT. Because the digital-to-analog process of your DVD should be way better than that of your cheap receiver's.
And in the opposite case: if the DVD is worth 400$ and the receiver 600$, then use the receiver's digital-to-analog converter, i.e. CONNECT IT DIGITALLY.

I hope you people get my points then.

1. Digital connection is not necessarily better than analog - depends upon the situation.

2. If you use digital sound outputs then the DVD doesn't have to do anything with the sound. Your receiver decodes the sound and is responsible for how it sounds.

See you later...

Weakness:

audio drop outs

I have been using this player for a few weeks now, and on various occasions the audio drops out for around a second. It happens around 10 times during a movie. It has happened on all DVD's I have played. I have removed and replaced the DVD, gone back to the particular spot in the movie, and the problem is no longer there, which suggests it is not the dvd and it can't be a layer change, and must be the player. It has also occurred when playing music. Does anyone else have this problem?

Weakness:

A little noisy and slow when accessing menus. Does not play CD-R. Remote does NOT light up.

Well, this is a follow-up review to the review I submitted in 10/2000 when I first gave this unit to my friend as an early Christmas gift.

So far the unit has been EXCELLENT! This is a refurbished unit I bought on eBay and she has not had a single problem AT ALL. She still does not have a 5.1 surround sound setup so I don't know how the Dolby Digital and dts output sounds.

She has purchased some DVDs, she has received a number as gifts, and has rented about 20 (or so) DVDs and EVERY disc plays flawlessly. I even brought over the copy of Galaxy Quest that gives my Pioneer DVL-919 grief and this SD-1200 played it without second thought. My guess is when the factory refurbished the unit they updated the firmware with more current firmware which probably has better error correction.

She is COMPLETELY satisfied with this DVD player and I still think it made an excellent gift! She does NOT have a "fnacy" TV, so we have not seen the component output capability of this unit. She's using the composite (A/V) video output.

I don't think you can readily find this unit anymore. Nonetheless it has worked out VERY well for my friend.

my actual model is the toshiba 1250y, this model is not listed on this site but is on the toshiba site. It is similiar to the 1200 but adds full cdr and cdr/w compatability, i only just bought this unit after returning the samsung 611 which just kept skipping and the MP3 playback was very hit'n'miss. It was $700 aus and that included zone free mod plus a free movie so it is on the expensive side. Remote is small but nothing i cant get used to

Strength:

cheap, good picture

Weakness:

No optical out; digital coax (audio) died

Worked fine for the first month, then refused to synch up with my receiver. I work in the electronics industry, so I had one of the engineers at work take a look at the DVD and the receiver. The diagnosis was that the receiver was fine, the DVD output stage was badly designed and used cheap parts; he couldn't believe it had ever worked. Seeing the output on an oscilliscope even I could see the problem. I've been in stereo mode ever since.

I have to say the picture quality is very good. I recently got a HDTV, and have just bought a Philips progressive scan DVD to get to 480p (and have working audio), but the jury is still out on the picture quality - the difference is minimal, in fact I almost think the Tosh was better...

Small remote, doesnt play CD-R media,

Excellent product for price paid. Has many options to set. Like the display brightness. Remote isnt the greatest in the world. Has 1- RCA outputs, 1- s-video output, 1- component outputs. No problems playing dual layer discs, no skipping or freezing on certain discs. Disappointed that it cant play cd-r music and thats what will keep it from getting 5 stars. Overall this is a very good product.

Strength:

The feature list is great - particularly 540 lines and 3 step zoom.

Weakness:

The main button of the remote is too small and too close to other buttons.

Simple design and very easy to use. Lots of 'real' features for an entry level unit.

The Audio and Video quality is outstanding. I have a late model 70cm (27.5") Samsung flat screen TV with SVHS input and a 16:9 mode that allows full res with 16:9 enhanced dvds. I run it through a Yamaha RXV pro-logic enhanced amp into Bose 301's and 101av's - for crystal clear sound.

After about watching about 12-15 discs the drawer has developed a rather obvious grinding noise on both opening and closing, which is VERY disappointing - the unit still plays fine though.

A friend and I paid $579ea Australian (about US$325) for a region free unit with 2 x free dvds and 5 free rentals.

Strength:

picture quality, front panel

Weakness:

remote

I bought this unit 2 months ago and have been very happy with it until recently. Audio is incredible, video was as well at first, however, I could not really watch widescreen movies on my 27 inch tv. So I bought top of the line 36 inch Hitachi tv with component input. This is where my dilemma starts: the picture is nice using cheap composite cable connection, but not great. So I plug in an s-video cable (monster silver series) and see almost no improvement. Than i plug in component cables, and see no improvement whatsoever from Svideo; the picture even takes on orange hue. I called Hitachi, they said it's the function of DVD player what resolution it sends out. Could not reach Toshiba yet.

So my question is: Should one expect not to see any difference in picture quality when using component video out of SD 1200? Does not seem right to me.

Other than that, I really like the player and hate the remote, impossible to use in the dark!
