Strength:

Now, none!

Weakness:

Broke after 15 months of use

DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT! Worked fine for over a year, and then ... it would no longer recognize a disk. I now get the message "NO DISC" when I place a DVD in. I will never buy another product from Toshiba!

Strength:

nothing special

Weakness:

does not work

It worked for a 6 months OK. Nothing unusual, but from the beginning did not recognized a considerable amount of dvds.
Now it works no mor than for 1 hr, than stops. I called
to service, they are very incompetent and unfriendly. Promised to call me back. It been more than months ago.
So, I plan to stay away from any Toshiba products in th future.

Strength:

Price.

Weakness:

Its a Toshiba. No fiberoptics. Remote. Pauses during layer changes on DVD.

Good DVD player. Great for money. Remote is OK. Sound is good even though it is just going through Coaxel and not fiberoptics. Pauses during layer changes (not long though). For the money you cant expect any better. I may upgrade to a Yamaha with a fiberoptic out.

Here is my system:

Yamaha RX-V800 : Reciever
Yamaha CDC-585 : CD Player
Toshiba SD-12000: DVD Player
21" Sony Trinitron: TV
Velodyne CHT-12: Subwoofer

Weakness:

It no longer works.

LIke one of the reviewers a while back, my player, after working fine for about 5 months, has stopped reading disks altogether. All i get is a "no disk" message whenever i stick in a disk. Totally friggin unacceptable IMHO.

Strength:

Decent picture, DTS

Weakness:

Remote sucks, noisy transport, pauses between layers

This is an OK DVD player when you take into account the price. The picture quality is good and I've never had any problems with reading discs. The remote however is a different story...What a piece of junk! How could a company that perfected its VCR remote produce such a useless DVD remote. I frequently have to turn on a light just to find the right buttons to pause a film or return to the Top Menu. If not for the remote I'd have given it 4 stars.
I have not tried the component video output as I have a standard television.
Recommended for people with low end systems, not planning on going to HD any time soon.

Weakness:

Layer Switch reading

player has lately been doing a poor job of reading the layer switch on just about every DVD i play on it, new or used. what used to be a one second pause has turned into as long as a 10-15 second wait before the switch occurs. there have also been some picture freezes and picture breakdowns (colored cube mosaics that appear on screen).

buyer beware!

Strength:

Excellent picture and sound quality easy to set up and use.

Weakness:

small remote, but no bid deal.

I am one who never has any luck with electronics, everytime I buy something it dies on me. I expected the same thing to happen to this DVD Player, but it fooled me, it actually worked. I have played many movies in my player and only had a prorblems with three disks. One was "Lost In Space" it would not access the special features so I had to turn it off and re-insert the disk again and it worked fine. Upon inspecting the disk I notice that the surface was smudged and scratched. The other movies were "Virus" where upon after it changed layers on the eighth chapter it skipped, there was a severe scratch on the disk and "Meet The Parents" where it had trouble reading the disk. Once again on "Meet The Parents" the disk was in bad shape, smudged and scratched. These three disks were rental disks that I rented from a local video store. Since then, I decided to rent from Netflix.com and had no problems with their disks not playing in my DVD Player. I would highly recomend this player to anyone who is in the market for and introductory level DVD Player, I am quite pleased with it.

Strength:

Good picture and sound

Weakness:

broke 13 months after purchase

I bought this player in June 2000. In August 2001, it broke. It does not want to take any dvd, it says either disc error, or insert disc (when the disc is already inserted). It played really well until it broke, the only complaint would be remote which is unusable in the dark room. Thinking about the next purchase, I upset since I have been Toshiba fan for many years and never had any problem with any of their products.

Strength:

picture quality, AC-3 quality.

Weakness:

no cd-r/rw support, pause when changing layers, issue with Dogma SE

this is my second dvd player... i've been using it for a year now with no problems... and it's taken a beating... it's been shipped from FL to TX to FL again, and in the 6 mo it was in TX, it played an average of 30 movies a week. I have JUST recently come across a problem with the new Dogma SE disc. At various spots near the end, it locks up. Only does it once, and if i hit Fwd and play real quick, it's fine... Not sure if it's the player, or something with the dogma disc. i'll assume the player since it's different spots everytime on the disc (and the first 2 times i watched the disc it NEVER locked up). aside from this problem, this is the best player i've had so far. i will be upgrading in the future, but probably to a higher end toshiba. their video processors are AMAZING!
I have been reading lots of reviews with people having issues with the player... and aside from that one with dogma, i have had NO problems... trust me, BUY THIS PLAYER!
