Strength:
good features.
Weakness:
Poor reliability. I bought this in June 2000. About 2 months ago I got the dreaded C:13 error message followed by the ''NO DISC'' message last week. But here''s the kicker. After reading some of the reviews here and elsewhere I decided, due to the cost, not to take it in for service. I was just going to buy something else. As a last resort I sent a message to the sci.electronics.repair newgroup for any thoughts about a possible simple cause (I have a technical background and am capable of digging into the beast). Well I got a response directing me to the exact cause and you''ll never guess what failed...a fuse. A very small surface mount fuse. I replaced it with another (91 cents plus tax). Several days later its still running fine. So, I wonder just how much Sony has been making in $100+ service charges to replace a fuse. |

Strength:
Awesome until it craps up after 12 months. Then TP has more value.
Weakness:
After 2 months TP can is still usable. I loved this DVD player whne I got it. I paid a high price for a Sony product and expected higher performance. But as you must have read this a thousand times, after 12 months it is a piece of junk. My DL DVD''s are a pain to watch. instead of all of us writing complaints here we should all write complaints to SONY. I did and waiting to hear from them. I even called them as recommended by amethyst2xx. But no luck they said it is time to service and they have not heard of this being a regular problem. BS. So everyone here should post a complaint on their website and if anyone is interestedina class action count me in. Similar Products Used: First and last sony DVD player I will ever buy. |

Strength:
SONY only made me wait on hold for two hours.
Weakness:
This DVD player would be perfect for target practice at my anti-corporate-conglomeration compound in Montanta. After my phone died, I got a SONY supervisor on the line, she tried to get me to repeat the entire discourse with the last customer service rep I spoke with, I told her the nature of the bad reviews on this product I had been reading for the past 2 hours. (Over 1,000 bad reviews) and she said she had to ''''research it.'''' When she came back (with her super) they said they would fix it for free if that was satisfactory. I said nothing else would be satisfactory and I would never pay to get this junk fixed. She gave me the address, so all of you guys call 1-800-222-7669 and select option 3 then select the option for home theater and make sure to always choose the option for product still being under warranty. It works Similar Products Used: NO MORE SONY.. EVER |

Strength:
Worked well for 12 months, fibre optic outs, 5.1 sound outs, and much more.
Weakness:
Is totally useless to me broken. I don''t think any major home theater product should crap out in 13 months. Should be called the 13 MOS error... Well... This is the first DVD player we have ever owned to start with. I hope this review will be a good warning to everyone considering the purchase of this particular model of SONY DVD Player. I always thought SONY was a good brand and their namesake was a sign of quality - boy was I wrong. These reviews I have been reading definitely show me 200 odd reasons I should have never purchased this unit. The player worked like a dream for the first 12 months with occasional freezing up at the end of certain scenes and switching from SL to DL. Month 13 hits and we''re watching a film. The image starts to break up then totally freezes. I open the player to check the DVD as it is rented. Lo and behold its totally clean for a change. When I put it back in, NO DISC. We spend the next hour trying to play ALL of our DVDs. None of them will play. None of our CDs will play. NO DISC for everything. *sigh* We buy a laser lens cleaner which can''t even be read to do its duty. My wife and I fumed about it for a few days and finally decided to do something. While researching new players since our old one has become a $300 TV Screen Saver, we find this site. I''ve now been reading aghast for the last hour and a half while my cordless phone is dying as I _STILL_ wait on hold for a SONY manager. I tried Sony Hacker''s trick, I got an error message that the calibration was failing - JITTER FAILURE or something like that. The player was great for the better part of a year. Now for month 13 we ring it in with NO DISC. I''d expect much more from SONY and certainly _MUCH_ more for $300.00. I don''t think my phone is going to make it to the point I would be able to tell you what happens, the beeping is coming much faster, but rest assured - I am going to start looking around for class action lawsuit regarding what I''ve read about this wonderful product. Strength:
Good solid unit.
Weakness:
No Zoom This is in addition to my first review of December 27, 2000. All I''ve got to say is, there seems to be a good possibility that some of you may have defective units. Or maybe you got a Malasia made unit, however, mine is made in Mexico, and I have had not an ounce of problems yet. If it is defective, only time will tell. Otherwise I highly recommend this unit. I will make one suggestion, find out where the unit is made before buying, as it seems I was told, this product has made in several different country''s: Japan, Malasia, China (if I''m not mistaking), and Mexico. Similar Products Used: None, first DVD player. But am looking at Panasonic DVD-RA60 for a DVD-Audio unit as it seems Sony has only SACD. |

Strength:
DTS, both coax and optical digital outputs, component video outputs.
Weakness:
Guaranteed freezing and skipping during movie viewing after 1 year of use. Noisy when accessing a disc. The Sony S560D had what I was looking for in a DVD player, DTS and Coax and Optical digital output as well as component video out. The player performed well for approximately 1 year, after which the fun began. I too have as so many others here have stated had major problems with discs freezing and skipping, primarily when on the second layer of a dual layer disc. I have tried the fix suggested by sonyhacker below, but I have found that the problems persist. I am at the point now where I am prepared to move on to another brand of DVD player. I have a Sony WEGA tv and a Sony STR-DE945 receiver both of which work fine. The bottom line I think is that this particular model has some design flaws that cannot be overcome. Your money can be better spent on another product. Similar Products Used: None |

Strength:
Doesn''t break from 3 stories up.
Weakness:
High Price Low Quality! I didn''t realize all the crap about this !@#$y model until I tried watching tron 20th Anv. Didn''t recon the disc. I went through and tried ever disc I owned from DVD to CD. Getting frustrated I desided to open the crap up and see if it just needed cleaning. I gave up and looked here.. DOH DOH DOH Well it did last for over a year... I find it funny how they all appear to break after one year!! SCREW YOU SONY! I used to think your stuff was good! I guess I was wrong.. |

Strength:
Picture quality, enough video and audio outputs to accomodate anyone, 24bit 96khz PCM pass-through.
Weakness:
None I just purchased the 560D and am so far very impressed. I mainly wanted to purchase a DVD player that would pass 24bit 96khz digitally so I could enjoy the 24/96 Chesky audio DVDs. This DVD player has a option to switch the output from 48khz to 96khz. I have a Sony TA-E9000ES pre-amp that decodes 24/96. This DVD player hooked up to the pre-amp via its digital connection and playing 24bit 96khz DVDs will blow you away. I also have a two year old Sony 3000 DVD player which has as good a picture as the original Sony 7000 reference DVD player so I was a little hesitant to try the 560D. I really wanted DTS and 24/96 capability though until DVD audio or SACD takes off so I decided to go ahead and get one. Well the picture of this unit is better than the 7000, or my 3000 unit and from what I can tell probably almost as good if not as good as Sony's new 7700 reference player.
