Strength:

Great price and superb picture quality

I just purchased a Sony 530D, and I am glad that I did. I hooked it up to my SonyXBR61, and the picture is superb. The unit I got was in the 184,000 range with 2.3 firmware. I have not seen any lipsynch problems, and it looks like Sony definetly has a winner here.

I just got my DVP-S530D yesterday, and low and behold, it's in the bad set of serial numbers, and when I checked the firmware version, it's 2.01. I can't believe I just ordered it and they still ship the bad ones. When I called Sony they said I had to pay the shipping to get it fixed. I say that's crazy. I buy a brand new unit with a known defect and they make me pay shipping. Anyway, I finally gave up and decided to take the unit myself to the repair center, 1 hour drive each way wasted. Sony I have my doubts about for future purchases.

This is a nice dvd player. Remote is easy to use. Picture/sound is good, with no lip-synch problems because mine has the new firmware.

Just purchased from onecall for $319 including shipping. Researched extensively and had major concern about lip-synch problem so often described. Serial number outside the posted "bad range". So far no problems, but how do you know what firmware the player has? Is it listed somewhere with the packing materials or in or on the player itself?

To find out the ROM version on the 530D/550D players do the following: With the player off press Title, Clear, then Power Key (It must be done from the remote). Press menu option #5, it will display firmware version. Do not go into any of the other menu's unless you know what you are doing.

Strength:

It has a very distinctive look, it does DD and DTS... and it has a component video output

Weakness:

I don't know if this is a flaw.. other than the fact that it has a onboard dd decoder( I don't really understand why they did that

The main reason that I purchaced this DVD player was because it has component video outputs, and it does DD and DTS...
I have seen The Matrix,Tomorrow Never Dies,Cruel Intentions, and Deep Blue Sea in Dolby Digital and I was watching Saving Private Ryan in DTS.
I have to say I have not been dissapointed...

the receiver that this is connected to is
the Sony Str da 555ES
my speakers are all infinitys RS's 5's in the front and rs4's in the rear and the Infinity Bu2 powered sub.

it is because of this that I will probably wait till movies come out on DVD. forget paying 8 dollars at some smelly theatre...

Strength:

Very good DVD player-reasonably priced-no play or lip-sync problems to date

Weakness:

None

I'm one of those guys that uses the 30 day return-to home test their audio/video products....raises hell with the credit card company...but I guess that it also creats employment..

Tried the Phillips 825 first-what a piece of crap-

Returned it to Best Buy...wandered back to the video department....and they had the Sony DVP-S530D on sale for $299 plus another $65 for a four year extended service contract....which I think is necessary and cheap for this new technology..

The out of box experience was relatively painless and I had it up and running in about 30 minutes-

Was very impressed with the picture and the sound (it's hooked up to a Sony STR-DB930 receiver and a 1999 Panasonic high end 61" big screen) over time and "burn-in" the player has gotten even more impressive in both picture and sound quality-

The DTS is definately worth the money paid for it-so far it is superior in sound rendation to the dolby digital movies-

Have played about 30 movies and countless cds on this machine and have not seen any lip-sync problems to date-

I would recommend this player to anyone who is looking for a superior picture and sound-

Speakers make a whole lot of difference to the sound-

My original Polk Audio center channel- and the Optimus rear speakers were not up to the job being handed it by the receiver-changed to a Mission 70C3 center and Aura 828M's in the rear with Atlantic Technology small centers on top run through a Sony 305 subwoofer (strange combination-but it sounds incrediby GREAT). The fronts are DBX Soundfield V's with an Atlantic Technology 8" subwoofer. The Eagles "Hell Freezes Over" Roy Orbitsons "Black and White Concert" and "Freeing Private Ryan" all look and sound AWESOME.

Strength:

Picture quality. Menu system is well designed. Good remote

Weakness:

lip sync problem. Freezing. (May have been fixed?)

I have had the 530 for 7 months. It had two problems: 1) occassional lip sync problems 2) would freeze and start the movie over on scratched DVD's. I sometimes get DVD's from the local library and they are often scratched. Part way thru the movie, the picture would freeze for a coulpe seconds and then start over from the beginning. I could play the same DVD in my Toshiba 2109 without problems.

I sent the unit to a Sony service center to have both problems fixed. They said they fixed it. I have only played a few DVD's since I got it back, but one had lip sync problems. Maybe it was a bad DVD? (I hope) I have not tried a scratched library DVD yet to see if it is less prone to freezing.
Overall though I like the unit. By the way, I got the unit back from the Sony Serivce Center less than a week after sending it to them. That's fast service.

Just wanted to give everyone here an update on the Sony 530D player. Its fantastic! I have it hooked up to a Sony 61XBR and a STR-DE635 receiver. This system Rocks! Also, my 530D has version 2.30 firmware which has fixed the lip synch problem. It looks like Sony has this issue resolved.

I purchased a 530d in June of '99. The unit had minor lyp-sync problems and audio drop-outs(DD Mode) near the end of movies when I first purchased it. About a month ago it would selectively play DVD's. I brought it to a service center and 3 weeks later I received a new unit via Fed Ex. This unit has firmware version 2.40 installed. I will post a message in a few months indicating if the problems have been resolved.
