Strength:

Great picture and sound quality

Weakness:

Lypsynch problem.

Great player. The only drawback I can find so far is the lypsynch thing which only pops up now and then. Other than that I've got nothing but praise. In fact I realy didn't think my old RPTV could look so good.

Strength:

Video & audio first rate.

Weakness:

Non-lit remote.Remote could not control receiver.

So far so good I had not experience any of the problems in the earlier models. Played The Matrix (including all the features) w/out problem. The built quality is definitely better than the other competitors. With the coming of all the other formats (HD-dvd, SA-dvd etc...) the 530D makes a good buy so I could save up to buy the all-in one machine.

Strength:

Incredible picture. Superior sound!

Weakness:

A couple of lip sync problems. Resolved easily

This is my first DVD player, and I am very, very happy with it. Although I only have a "27 inch TV, I am astounded with the quality of the picture. I bought my wife THE WIZARD OF OZ on DVD and even she was impressed with the picture and sound. And believe me, that is saying something!

Strength:

Great remote, picture quality, can control TV with remote, internal decoding done right, passes below-black information

Weakness:

Owner's manual could be better, won't play CD-R

I finally bought this model after someone else here listed the serial numbers for models created after the lip-synch fix.

I have it connected to a JVC with component inputs and the picture quality was very good. Then I bought the Video Essentials DVD to calibrate the picture and now the picture is awesome. The sound is pretty good, although I don't have any surround speakers connected at the moment (I have to run wiring though the walls).

I don't have any qualms about this player. It would be nice to have internal DTS decoding since I only have a Yamaha receiver with a 6-channel input. I have a DTS music disc from CES, but most DTS music is classical stuff, so it's no big deal.

The remote is first rate and I like the menu navigation controls much better than the joystick found on the DVP-S550D model.

The player had no problems with The Matrix DVD, which some players have a hard time with (mostly 1st generation players). The player is faster to play and switch chapters than some of the older players I have experience with (I sold DVD players when they first came out).

If you get one with a high enough serial number, you will not have any lip-synch problems. This player is worth its price.

Strength:

Great picture quality

Weakness:

lipsynch problem

This dvd player is great. It is reasonably priced. I got mine online for only $299 with no s&h and no sales tax. Although the lipsynch problem was annoying, the picture quality made up for it. Watching "A Bug's Life" blew me away.

Strength:

DD 5.1 decoding
Easy to use on-screen menus

Weakness:

Audio synchronizing a little off at times

The Sony S-530D DVD player is an all around great deal. The sound and video impressed me, seeing other players at the price range of $350(USD).

You might have heard about a lip-synching problem from other reviews, but don't listen to them. For clarification, the player plays the audio track slightly before or after the video portion of the DVD. I have watched over 75 DVDs and the problem barely came up at all. This problem does NOT come up as much as people say it does.

Another horribly misinterpreted drawback of this player was some "random skipping on the disc to various chapters, or the beginning." This is NOT TRUE. I rented Something About Mary from a video chain, and the disc skipped from chapter 5 to the beginning. Immediately I checked the disc. Obviously this chain doesn't have a strict policy on scratched discs. I then purchased a clean cut disc from another store and watched it again with no problems.

For the money, this is the best DVD player around. I would recommend this player to anyone wanting to spend less than $400 retail.

First, thanks to Jeff Crowder for posting the bad serial numbers on the site. I bought the Pioneer 525 at first and had it at home. The Pioneer did not have built in DD decoder so I bought the Sony 530D at the same time to compare. I have a DD/DTS ready receiver. As far as picture was concerned, the Sony was definitely superior. The sound was obviously better with the Sony due to built in DD. Seen 10 movies and no fault yet. Looks like this is a keeper unless Pioneer 626D w/DD and DTS built in comes out soon.

Strength:

superb picture, excellent down-conversion, decent remote

Weakness:

choppy fast forward and reverse

While I have only had this unit for a short time, I am thrilled with its performance. Both sound and video are excellent - I have yet to spot any noticable artifacts. Both pan&scan and anamorphic look excellent on my 4:3 Sony TV, with the most saturated and natural looking colors I have ever seen on my set.

My only real quibble is with the fast forward and reverse features, which I find suprisingly choppy - so much for "SmoothScan." Also, I wish the remote had the little joystick gadget rather than the 5 cursor controls. Though I do think I like the seperate search buttons better than the jog dials on the other remotes.

Strength:

great picture many nice features for the price

Weakness:

lip sync

I got this unit home hoping tht it was one of the good ones. Well it was version 2.020 so I am told that is not good. I believeve that now I have had trouble in 2 out of four movies one being Ronin, with lip sync problems. Icalled sony today and they said I would have to send to the service center on my shipping. I argued and sid I had heard that other got theirs picked up by fed EX. Well I got no where with this lady. I called back this afternoon and got a different lady and her first words were well we can have fed ex pick that up for you. They are picking the unit up on friday 2 days from now. My point is do not give up call till you get results to suit you. they are still paying the shipping depending on what the person on the other end of the phone wants to do. Good luck to all Sony Fans. I have this Dvd and the wega tv and the DA50 reciever all I can say is it sounds and looks damn good.
