Strength:

rich color, good picture, full dvd control on front panel

Weakness:

THE DAMN SPINNING NOISE, doesnt play cd-r's, Sony "customer service"

Its a great entry level player and for the price i got it on clearance, you cant beat it.

HOWEVER

The sound of the damn disc spinning inside this thing is so loud its driving me to insanity. I guess its a trademark of this thing, at least according to this site and the sales clerk. What good is awesome picture and digital sound if you have to deal with this shrill annoying noise in the background??? My crappy sam-suck 709 was whipser quiet. I kind of expected more from sony, but again as i have in the past, sony ALWAYS lets me down.

I live in an apartment so turning up the volume isnt really an option for drowning it out. It does seem to get better as it warms up, but then it gets louder then softer, then louder again, soft again. It's driving me nuts. I TRIED calling Sony customer service a few times, but seeing as how the average wait time was always in excess of 30 minutes i never did get to talk to anyone about this problem yet. Sony customer service sucks. I hate sony in general but for the price I got it (125) i hate to return it just to pay 250 for a brand new one (mine was clearance/cust return). If anyone has had this problem and/or had it fixed by an authorised service center, please let me know.

I have to rate this product low because I cant enjoy movies with the tray noise, i bought this thing specifically to enjoy movies.

Strength:

Very easy to use and great picture

Weakness:

Does not have a dts chip but I also bought a suround sound system which is awesome, also a Sony

A great buy if you are purchasing a suround sound system with it. Even if you don't it is still ok because you will. With a DVD picture quality the only next step is to an upgraded stereo and then of course to a new Plasma HDTV set to complete the home theater.

Strength:

Nice build quality for the money - haven't heard any noise from the platter. The disc drawer opens/closes very smoothly, easy and intuitive to operate. Good remote and menu system.

Weakness:

Seems like a great player except...see summary.

For the money, this player simply can't be beat. Sears price matched (with no hesitation) an internet $181. With tax = $189, and minus $50 rebate for $139. I actually almost felt bad when I walked out of the store a few nights ago. I can't believe the price I got for this. However, my excitement was quickly dashed once I fired it up at home.

I have Little Mermaid 1 and 2, Fight Club, Saving Private Ryan on DVD. Using the S-vid connection, none of them looked good at all. The picture was very soft, and seemed slightly washed out. The Disney Channel was running The Little Mermaid at the same time, and there was no comparison. The cable picture was much better (I do not have DSS). I made sure everything was hooked up correctly and even used the same cable and TV input my LD player uses since I know that they are working properly.
Fight club in particular looks awful - it looked slightly tinted and smeared, similar to how old movies sometimes looked when the networks show them on TV. And this is supposed to be a reference quality DVD! However, the player's and the DVD movie's menu and title screens looked great. Only the actual movie looked dim, blurry, and washed out. I must say though, and I'm still trying to figure this one out, that I also have The Song Remains the Same on DVD and it looks really good. The colors are very, very natural, nicely saturated, and there is a very nice level of detail - it looks like an excellent LD transfer. Especially the concert footage. Very impressive.

I cannot believe the problems I've listed are typical of this model, especially after reading all the rave reviews here. The s360 also has considerably Chroma Delay - the color information is shifted noticeably on my 27" Proscan tv.
It must be defective somehow. I will rent some DVD's of LD movies I have for comparison purposes, then I plan on exchanging it at Sears for another S360. I just hope Sears doesn't have a "bad batch" of S360's in their warehouse.

I'll keep you posted. If any one else has had a similar problem with this player, please drop me a line at pjonall@aol.com

Strength:

Some nice options.

Weakness:

Design is flawed.

I'm sorry to report I too am starting to see problems similar to those many are reporting. I've had my 360 for about 11 months. The player has serious problems on multi-layer discs where it didn't before. It skips entire scenes and locks up as soon as the layer changes. If the DVD is ejected and then reinserted, for some reason it seems to play. The player is horrible with scratched discs. If you look through these reviews, you'll notice 90% of the "good" reviews are from people who have owned the player for less than a month. The problems seem to start showing up around the 1 year mark. DO NOT BUY THIS DVD PLAYER!!! I'm looking for a new player, Sony ripped me off in my opinion. I won't buy another Sony and it isn't worth paying $138 to get it fixed if it's going to happen again in a year. Good luck to all those that have this player.

Weakness:

Reliablity, Customer Service, and the annoying ticking noise when the DVD is playing

This is rather uncanny, I read the review by Rick dated 4-22 and my experience and sentiment almost match. I purchased our unit about the same time, however the first unit scrambled and locked up on certain DVD's within the first week. The store replaced it for me. The second unit lasted 10 months. Just as Rick stated, it failed to recognize disks and as he stated Sony Customer Service hit me with the 138 dollar fixed fee repair even though it was under parts warranty. I also contacted two independent repair stations that Sony Customer Service gave me and they required a non-refundable forty-dollar fee just to receive an estimate and the repairs would be roughly 70-90% of the value of the unit. As disturbing as this was, the real frustration comes after dealing with Sony Customer Service. I thought the cost of repair was unreasonable, seeing we had our share of trouble with the DVD-S360, so I wrote a letter to the Office of the president in an appeal. In the letter I asked to talk directly to someone and some days later I did receive a call. The person on the other end was lifeless and monotone. He read the letter I wrote back to me pausing at every sentence to ask me " Is this right?" Well of course it was right, I wrote it! At the end of that muse, his tactics shifted to silence. He said and offered nothing. He patiently just waited for me to terminate the call. We had dead silence for an enormous amount of time. I expected at least a morsel, possibly just to reduce the repair bill to closer to 100 dollars. It was not to be so. He out waited me. I assume he must have been working a crossword puzzle or something. His only concern was to get rid of me. I have since purchased a Toshiba. I am happy with it. It has one less set of audio output jacks, but more importantly it does not have that irritating ticking noise while the DVD is playing that seems to be on most of the Sony DVD's. The bottom Line is cannot recommend the Sony's, their reliability does not match what we would expect from their name and their customer service is worse.
