Had an excellent picture

Weakness:

Sony product

I have been reading the posts and I wish I had discovered this forum before I bought it. I am having all of the same problems after less than a year of ownership. I took the player to an authorized service center. It costs me $40 for the evaluation. I was told the pc card/laser pickup needed replacment. Total for parts and labor: $283.30. I paid $250 for it! I am now looking to find the part online. Anyone who has an idea, let me know. As for me, NO MORE SONY PRODUCTS in my house. I just purchased a Panasonic DVD and I hope that works for longer than 9 months. As far as a class action, count me in.

I just tried the calibration to no success. This unit is garbage and I warn anyone who is thinking of buying a Sony DVD player. The calibration is easy to get through but I think some problems are mechanical, hence the parts replacement for those guys who took their units in to be fixed. The calibration starts, I can hear the disk starting to spin then stopping. It does this for about 5 seconds then "error." One neat thing in the calibration menu is that you can see the hours of usage. I had 20 hours before mine broke. This is just sad. As for Kip, you can buy my player for $100, this seems to be far less than Sony would charge to fix their defective player. If you offer me any less, I'll just hold on to it for the class action lawsuit.

I really don't know

Weakness:

C:13:0.0 error

Hi from the latest entrant to the 'C13' error club. I purchased my junk in May 1999 and got the first C13 message on the SAME DVD that it used to play perfectly. This is my own DVD and maintaine dperfectlyso the issue of rental/dirt etc, I believe, does not arise. Worst the SAME DVD plays well (rather excellently) on Pioneer DVD player. So I guess its not these DVD's that have to be blamed. My player I guess has some more life since I am still able to play other DVD's (so far!). But I am willing to be part of any suit against these infidels. Lastly, this will be my last Sony product!!

Calibration update:

I've tried to play 2 DVDs since my last posting. Each one gave the infamous C13 error upon loading (one was Shrek, a brand new DVD). However, I got each DVD to play after recalibrating the unit with that DVD. Not particularly promising and the whole thing may just be one big coincidence.

Strength:

Easy to use

Weakness:

Shelf life less than that of ice cream in open air

Does anyone know how the Best Buy 4 year PSP (Personal Protection Plan) works? I bought the Sony DVPS360 crap and also a 4yr PSP (since it was an open box item) and now that it stopped working want to take it to the nearest Best Buy. Want to know if my 4 year PSP plan is worth anything or do I have to shell out $$$ for getting this junk fixed?

PS: Sony may you run into banktruptcy for getting such products out.

Player died and came back from the Dead

I bought this DVD player back in June 2000 and put up a review on this site days after buying it praising every aspect of the DVD player. Especially the remote which I still think is the best of the low-mid range DVD players.

Then in May of 2001 I started getting this problem(no not the dreaded C:13:00) My problem was after playing for anywhere between 30 - 60mins the unit would shut down, you would see a Blue Screen and the screen saver come on and the unit would power back on and go to the Menu or start playing from the start. Then I would just go back to the point where the movie stopped and the movie would finish without any problems.

This happened all summer 2001, then in early September my DVD player wouldn't power on and after trying for 5 minutes it came on and the same problem I described above would happen. Then in October 2001 my DVD player wouldn't turn on at all. So I finally decided to get it fixed. I sent it to have the estimate done and it was sent straight to Sony, after 2 weeks they called back saying nothing was wrong with it and then 2 weeks later they called saying the System board and Optical unit had to be replaced at a cost of $405(Canadian). I said forgot it and got my DVD player back.

Well when I got it back it powered on no problems and it played 2 DVD(rentals - Swordfish and Shriek) without any problems. So I am wondering if all the poking, opening and reassembling the unit fixed the problem. Only time will tell. But for $30 it looks like my DVD player is fixed.

Because of the problem I have had I will give it 3 Stars for Value and Overall rating. But I still like every aspect of this DVD player - Remote, Features of DVD player (Smooth scanning forwards & backwards, GUI Menu, Slim look). But I will think twice before buying another Sony DVD player.

Strength:

Nice remote, slim case fits in my already cramped rack

Weakness:

Items in your refrigerator's crisper have a longer lifespan.

I started getting C:13 over the summer, and only recently has it gotten to the point where most of my DVD's would no longer play.

I tried the calibration technique presented on this site, and it has worked wonders. I thought I'd share some tips that I found useful.

First of all, I would suggest running the entire calibration (DVD-SL, CD, and DVD-DL), just to be on the safe side. You should also run it multiple times, using different discs for each calibration. Each time, when the unit asks if you wish to restore default values first, reply "Yes". (This is just to provide a common baseline. Hopefully you will get repeatable results this way.)

While each disc is testing, keep track of the 2-digit hexadecimal "Jitter" value updating in the lower right hand corner. This represents how much trouble the laser is having while reading the disc. 00 is best, FF is worst.

After running three or four test calibrations, run the calibration one final time, using the CD, DVD-SL, and DVD-DL that produced the least jitter. Hopefully, this will eliminate C:13 problems with the great majority of your discs.

Your mileage may vary, but this method worked exceptionally well for me. I'll probably still replace this rubbishware with a Marantz VC8100 (or comparable model) sometime next year, but at least I'm free to spend my Christmas money on gifts for others!

Strength:

inexpensive, decent options for price

Weakness:

picture extremely pixeled, noisy transport, skipping between chapters, "lip syncing" effect

After reading reviews on this site I was able to avoid the dreaded C13 errors, my player never actually died or produced any errors, other than the gripes listed above. Tweeter let me exchange the player, barely one year shy of purchase, for a Panasonic that will play CDR's, mp3's and with progressive scan output, for the same price. Sony is usually very reliable for video, but not in this case.
