My DVD player has worked well. No lip-synch problems, not even when watching the Matrix. Titanic looked awesome; the colors were unbelievable. I have a question. Has anyone actually received the free rentals and DVD's as advertised? I somehow feel that it might be a scam because I have yet to get my stuff. Plus I refuse to give my credit card to Columbia House or netflix.com for my so-called "free" stuff. If it is free, then my card # is unnecessary. But the other two offers I have yet to hear from. Anyway, the S330 is a good player.

Strength:

Great picture, extremely easy to set up, overall excellent value.

Weakness:

A little more expensive than other brands.

Overall, I'm very happy with the unit even though I'm going to return mine in favor of the larger 200 disc changer unit (850?). The only complaint I had was that the CD spinning was abnormally loud for some reason. So during quiet sceens, you constantly heard this. It could have been just my unit, but who knows.

Weakness:

Update to my post on 12/20. The lip sync problem has arrived!!!!

I submitted a review on 12/20 indicating no problems with the lip sync on Ronin or Matrix. Alas, the next day while watching The General's Daughter there it was, in no uncertain terms. Rather then screw around with returning the unit and taking a chance on higher serial # = higher firmware #, I took it straight back to Sony. 9 days later I'm still waiting for my repaired DVD only to learn that the parts are on back order. I just read the posts from other people spelling out EXACTLY how to determine the firmware # - Thank You. No such help from Sony. I feel they should be more honest with their customers. I do understand that when they first introduced this machine that it was compatible with all current DVD's, I also know encoding enhancments make firmware upgrades necessary, what I can't understand is why Sony, obviously knowing about the problem, refuses to publicly admit it. Wait, I do know why. It's much more expensive for them to recall all the lower firmware players for proper upgrade and hope they fall in to the cracks of the general (non-audiophile) public then it is to repair the relative few that are returned.

I'm reserving final evaluation until I receive the repaired unit home. IF it is fixed correctly the first time then I'm happy with it. My opinions about the corporate mentality of Sony however, are less than ideal.

Strength:

Price

Weakness:

Lipsynch, cheap construction

After going through three Sony S330's (2 w/lipsynch problems - ver 2.01 & one with a faulty front display), I was thoroughly fed up with this player. I even tried to talk a Sony dealer into checking the firmware version of an S330 before I purchased. He got quite irate and said he would not open the box without a sale! I then decided to go with established quality instead of a bargain and puchased the Onkyo C600. Absolutely no problems with great video/audio and solid construction.
Goodbye Sony!

I recently auditioned the Sony DVP 330S at The Sony Store. I watched Jerry Mcguire on this machine. Not exactly the greatest action flick, but on the other hand I was more interested in the sound and video reproduction. I found video reproduction to be sharp and crystal clear. The sound track was also reproduced very clearly. The machine also has some nice features such as optical and coaxle digital outputs @ S-Video outputs and DTS stream out. One drawback I could see for this machine is the fact that it has no componenet output, which could be a problem for those who require it. The build quality seemed good and it looked like it was well put together. Like the other new generation Sony's, it does not have dual laser pickup. All in all I found it to be a good player. I would like to know if anyone else has auditioned this machine and what their opinions are on this unit.

Strength:

Easy to use. Plenty of Hookup Options.

Weakness:

Lip Sync problem. Picture freezing and suddenly stopping.

I realize that this is now a discontinued model. There are quite a few of them fetching good money on Ebay…,probably where mine will end up. When I first got the unit home I hooked it up to my 10-year old Kenwood Pro-Logic receiver with RCA Cables. I used the S-Video output directly to my TV. I was impressed (not amazed), by the sound and picture. Soon I upgraded my receiver to the Marantz SR5000 and used the coaxial output. The sound improved dramatically.

Recently I have started to experience the lip sync problem described in other reviews, along with problems reading several DVD’s. I just finished a room in my home dedicated to home theater. I now have a 53-inch projection HD TV (Sony 53HS10) with Component Video Inputs. I made the move to a Progressive Scan Pioneer Elite DV-C36. It blows the Sony out of the water and it was only $200 bucks more for incredible picture and sound.

If you are considering one of these players, go for a more current model. This player seems plagued with problems.
