Strength:

Well...no more problems in one year and a half

Weakness:

Let be honest...for an entry level DVD nothing important

Follow-up: I reviewed here this player more than one year ago and I was a little negative about it...I experimented the lip-sync problem two or three times and with CDs it had a slight "click" sound for time to time. As my primary goal is music and I have my only music system apart from my HT system I let it passed. Curiously the machine never had again this problems after more than a year, even with the same discs, and actually it is working as new (or, better than new?). Don´t ask me why, because I just don´t know. So, it is still in my HT system, entertainning me and my family. This is a very misterious an unpredictable piece of work, but now I think I was a little unfair with it. For now it will be stay in my HT system until it fails or until I get a great DVD player bargain.

Strength:

Excellent Player when it works.

Weakness:

Lip syncing problem, can workaround by stopping once and running again where it left off. But started getting C:13:00 errors on previously good discs and now even brand new DVDs. I have not made any correlation to the type of DVD but when it happens it won't work anymore. I now regret purchasing this unit and will never again purchase a Sony DVD player since this seems to be a common thing with their players. I refuse to deal with Sony service because of the horror stories I have heard about them. Japanese products are primarily designed for throw-away and their customer service normally leaves something to be desired. I will attempt to repair this myself and if I get nowhere then to the parts bin it goes. What will I buy next? , I don't know but the cost of a player is far outweighed by the investment I have in DVDs now (roughly 250 titles) so it reallly doesn't matter.

If it says "SONY" and "DVD" on the same cabinet, DON"T BUY IT. Unless you think the price vs lifetime is worth it. At $349 and a lifetime of just under two years (~20 months) it cost us about $17.50/mo for that unit, a unit that will most likely be scrapped for parts.

Strength:

Good picture quality, decent sound.

Weakness:

Loud motor.

After using this dvd player for almost a year now i am very disappointed with the performance of it. The fact that it only reads a few cdr dics, the loud humming noise from the motor, the tray does open to fast either.
This product seemed to work great when i bought it but after about a year of use is has really sunk. Luckily i have a extended warranty through Circuit City so the are going to replace it for me. All i know is that it wont be another sony.

I ordered the Sony DVP-S330 DVD Player from Crutchfield on Monday. It arrived today. I also own a Panasonic DVD-A110. Here's a quick review. The features are pretty well covered on Sony's website so I won't repeat them here.
The "Enter" and arrow key button on the 330 itself is a bit flimsy but will probably not get much use because I will use the remote for these functions. The remote is like the one that comes with the 530.

Since I have the Panasonic 110 I did a few picture comparisons on my Toshiba 32 in. television. Images that aren't down-converted look identical. The down-conversion on the 110 yields a sharper picture. The Sony 330 is softer looking. The text at the beginning of "The Mask of Zorro" is sharper and easier to read on the 110 than 330, but if I hadn't played the section on one unit and then the other, I probably wouldn't have noticed. The softer image on the 330 does have an advantage; it hides moire (sp) that may appear in certain detailed patterns on the 110. Remember I'm talking about down-converted images. I think it all boils down to personal preference. I like both.

I haven't played any DVDs in their entirety. I'll post here if I spot the lip-sync problem that people have reported on the 530 and 550. I'm hoping that since this was released later that the problem was resolved.

It comes with a 1 year parts and labor warranty.

I had a Toshiba 2108, and was not pleased with the audio drop-outs. I borrowed a DVP330S last weekend, and was relatively pleased with the performance. I experienced no audio drop-outs, clear video, and especially liked the both forward and reverse smooth scan, also in slow motion. Of special interest was the remote control which nows operates the volume control of many receivers, including my Yamaha 793. As I have a Sony 32" TV, the remote serves multiple purposes.
The only problem I noticed was that two rental DVD's did not play well on the Sony, but one played without any problems on the Toshiba 2108. By cleaning the disks, both played without incident. I don't have component video inputs on my TV, so the lack of this feature on the Sony DVP330 is not a concern to me.

I purchased the Sony DVP S330 DVD player for $510 CDN. The salesman who I know told me this is 5% above cost. I have a Denon AVR 1700's decoder used with this player and Mission 704's. The picture on a 36" GAOO is SWEET! It is an awesome full sound where it feels like the sound just surrounds you like when you're in a theatre. If you can find two or three dealers in your town that carry this DVD player get a price from each and have one place out-bid another and you should be able to get this kind of deal as well.

It finally showed up -- the lip-sync problem. While watching Ronin the sync went out. Pausing then resuming play corrected the problem. I played a few more titles without problem. Then it happened on three discs in a row. On the last of the three (The Phantom) it was subtle, but when I backed it up a bit and resumed play the sync was corrected. On the others it was obvious the sync went out. I have exchanged this for a Panasonic 120.

I purchased the Sony DVP-330S along with the Denon AVR-3300. Both units have been working flawlessly. I had read about the lip sync problem, but have viewed about a dozen discs (including Lost in Space and Ronin which were supposed to be problematic with no lip sync problems.). I have check ed the firmware version of the unit, which is 1.95. Overall, the picture quality and sound quality is excellent. For the money, I believe it's the best unit around under $400.
