Strength:

amazing for DVD, great CD transport

Weakness:

takes a long time to spit out Discs

Granted, the other players I tested are pretty much in a different class altogether from the S3000, but there are similarities that don't make the comparison too unreasonable. I'll sum this player up without being too long-winded: it rocks. It, of course is essentially the same machine as the 7000, but for hundreds less (at least initially), which is why Sony pulled it after less than a year on the market. In terms of DVD, the colors are beautiful. My friends and roomates are awe-struck with the differences. As a transport, only you can deliver the final verdict, so don't believe what anyone says. In my opinion, it is not only adequate, it's superlative. The first few days there was this weird intermittent loss of info (REAL heavy jitter) which made me mad, but then it stopped. Cool.
Five stars as a transport and as a DVD player. Five stars for value for the price.

Strength:

Reliable

Weakness:

First Generation player/ Can't pass DTS bitstream

Has no difficulties playing dual layered disks. In fact, I have never experienced a single problem with this venerable player. Generally speaking, its completely reliable, decent looking, and gets the job done. Video quality is also exceptional. Contrary to what some may believe, this player uses the same transport as the DVP S7000.

A 5 star when working

GARY I HAD MY DVP-S3000 SINCE NOV. 1997 AND HAVE HAD NOT A SINGLE PROBLEM WITHMINE. IT MUST BE BAD LUCK FOR YOU TO HAVE RECEIVED TWO BAD SAMPLES, CHECK TO MAKE SURE THAT YOUR DISC ARE CLEAN. DVD DOSN'T SEEM TO DO WELL WITH DIRTY DISCS.
I HAVE TO RATE MINE FIVE STARS, EVEN IF IT WONT PASS A DTS SIGNAL.

Strength:

Solid performance, quality, durability

Weakness:

Remote, only OSD programming of tracks/chapters

The only DVD player I ever had. I keep trying to think of a reason to replace it but I can't. Maybe with a DVD carousel...

I'm a reasonably early adopter most times, and probably paid too much, but I couldn't be happier with the results. Simply put, it does what it is supposed to do, provide the foundation for thrilling DVD viewing. Okay, so the remote is a little hokey, and it would be nice if some of the OSD stuff was available as push button on the unit, but I'll take must have solid performance ahead of nice to have features any day.

I was less than thrilled with CD sound until I switched from COAX to toslink output. I still like my Onkyo CD player a little better, but much harder to tell the difference now.

Onkyo 747 5.1 receiver
Zenith 32in TV

Boston CR2 center
Boston VR950 mains

I have had mine since November 1997. I have had only one disc that would not play in it. the video quality and sound quality is and has been excellent. for the money spent at the time I feel it was the best player available. I have no plans to replace it until sacd and dvd audio gets sorted out.

Strength:

Tremendous quality. Solid design and looks. Quiet. Flawless Playback.

Weakness:

No dts. but then again how many dts only dvd's are there. more importantly...who cares.

As other have said, it's a good product. If only Sony made everything this well. I got into all this home theater nonsense well over two years ago. I set up a nice system at the time with this unit as the center piece. Now I've got some cash to burn so I'm checking the reviews to see what's new, expecting to find wonderful new players, packed with features I could have only dreamed of before. What do I find? The s3000, still at the top of the heap. To all of you who can still get one of these. Get one. You won't be sorry. My collection of films is about 90 deep, never had problems with playback, no transport noise, I prefer this remote over the newer sony remotes. What else can I say.

Strength:

Long-lasting quality

Weakness:

No DTS or component output

For three years this has been my sole DVD player and I still have little desire to upgrade. In fact, my entire home theater has changed since purchasing it. I’ve gone through three receivers, three sets of speakers, three CD players, and two TVs. My main reason for purchasing it back in 1997 was because I knew I wanted a Sony, and the DVP-S7000 – the only other Sony model at the time – was too expensive. Back in the day, that’s how easy it was to choose a DVD player!

I started my home theater off with this piece of equipment hooked up to a stereo receiver and 20" TV, and even then it was a drastic improvement over VHS. Today I have a DD-EX surround setup and am using the S-Video outs to connect to my 27" Vega, so I feel the DVP-S3000 is now being used to its full potential. Having said that, I again mention that I am in no hurry to upgrade. I am still astounded by DD and don’t feel the need to buy a new DVD player just for the few DTS titles out there. And I know by upgrading I could be taking advantage of the component input on my Vega, but it is my understanding that the improvement in picture quality offered on a TV my size is hard to recognize.

I have close to 150 titles on DVD, and am a customer of Netflix, so I have seen my share of movies, and every one of them has been great through this machine. I’ve never encountered a problem at layer changes or with DVD-ROM content. All in all, a fine purchase. My only complaint that I have (and had back in ’97) is that the asthetics of the player are not what I would deem attractive. Nothing that stopped me from buying it – or even give pause – but a small concern none-the-less. Thankfully, Sony has more than made up for it with their sexy new DVP-S9000ES.

Strength:

Picture and nice sound

Weakness:

No DTS but 5.1 is always avaliable anyways

I got this unit at a bargain when it was first introduced. Me and a freind decided to get into DVD and read the review of it in home theater. Unit has performed flawlessly. As long as you put your DVDs back in there case there should be no problems. I've never had any problem with this unit other than it skipped on a few DIRTY CD's. I'm upgrading my TV to the Toshiba TW40x81. Would like to know if anybody has used this DVD player with DVDO's ISCAN PLus since the DVD has no component video. I have a NAD receiver and was going to use their new DVD picture but it had jagged lines. I think they are going to have to fix this if they want to sell a $900 (can) DVD player. So i'm going to stick with the Sony and get the Iscan. If yo ucan find this unit anywere; garage sale, pawnshop: grab it right away it will last for years. It still rivals DVDs today !!!
