Unreliable unit with poor customer support. Unit would freeze up while playing DVD''''s. Eventually, unit would not even read any DVD''''s or CD''''s. Unit was under warranty, but the ONLY option offered was to replace the unit for $90, almost the cost of a new unit. Unit is loud reading disks.

A total rip-off!

I purchased this DVD player about 7 months ago. I used it occasionally, viewing perhaps 20 DVDs at the most. Then, one day, no power! After checking the player and its connections, nothing! I did an Internet search on RCA DVD player troubleshooting and I discovered this site! As far as I''m concerned, Thomson Consumer Electronics defrauds customers and puts customers at risk! I''m so angry that I had this player in my home and it posed the risk of overheating and possibly causing a fire! This player needs to be recalled! I''ve posted an online complaint with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission and the Federal Trade Commission! After doing research on Thomson Consumer Electronics, I''ve learned that they have received numerous complaints on their RCA and GE products, are being sued by the EEOC, offer terrible customer service and recalled their GE radio cassette players in 1999 due to overheating! I will never again buy an RCA product!

Dead after 8 months of use. If refurb unit does same thing or other things, will never purchase RCA anything again.

Owned the unit for 8 months with no problems, then had to move it into a new wall unit and the power would not come on at all. So went to the wonderful (NOT) thompson number and talked with them and decided to pay the outrageous 90.00 fee for a refurb unit and will pick that up tomorrow. Wished after reading the reviews had just gone wiht another brand.

Has trouble reading DVDs

I would suggest saving your money and buying one of the $300 Sony units. This DVD player is loud (you can hear the DVD spinning) and has trouble reading DVDs, so you get ocassional skipping.

Strength:

Good picture and sound.

Weakness:

Blew up after 2 movies.

Had the unit one day, on the second movie that we played the unit quit and smelled like burning rubber. It never worked again. I found out from repair shops that this unit has a reputation for overheating. Next time I will do my homework.

Strength:

Easy-to-use control panel and remote. Works well with other RCA (Thomson) equipment.

Weakness:

Cheaply constructed. Seems to generate excess heat. Funny looking.

I bought this unit because I wanted a basic player with minimal output. That’s exactly what the RCA RC5215P is. Although Thomson Multimedia isn't known for their "quality control", I still feel that this player is a prime example of a basic DVD player. It's like a Mustang GT with the optional V6.

I would never compare this player with a Sony or a Toshiba. However, all consumer electronic manufactures have their strong and weak points. Thomson seems to really slack on their DVD players (RCA...GE, PROSCAN...) probably because they have such a wide market and are pushing so many other products in their catalogue.

I wouldn’t recommend this player to somebody who looks towards investments, mainly because of the minimal output and limited compatibility (no CDR or MP3 Etc...)

This player makes a good toy for in the kids playroom...not for in the entertainment center. RCA does have what they call a "Professional Series". I would say to look into this line if you're seeking the alternative of an entry-level Sony.

Strength:

Low price and simple to use.

This RCA 5215 DVD player is well worth the money. I have used it for just under a month and have had no problems whatsoever. I have not experienced any excessive heat from the unit(one of the things I was concerned about before purchase) even while watching movies back to back. I have watched several different movies with crystal clear reception and flawless presentation. I have not experienced pixelation or play freezing. Hopefully, the unit will continue with this level of quality play.
