Weakness:

THE WHOLE UNIT !!!!

BEWARE!!!!! I received this unit as a Mother's Day present, and have had problems from day one. It was the first DVD player we had in the house. The unit would not play dvds all the way through without breaking up or skipping scenes, or freezing. Now, after approximately 1 year, and MAYBE using it about 30 times (if that) it won't turn on. I went to RCA site to troubleshoot. Got nowhere. Then looked up reviews and was SHOCKED to see how many bad reviews this unit has gotten. I plan on taking this POS directly to Radio Shack and demanding some kind of replacement.(EVEN though I really don't want another RCA product in my house !!) And I don't plan on paying a dime ! I am printing out all of the bad reviews to take along. If anyone decides on class action lawsuit- please inform me. I will be the first to jump in and get RCA for ripping me off. I also believe there is a dvd of my 11 yr. old's currently in the player- but I can't get it out, because IT DOESN'T WORK ! If Radio Shack does nothing, I might just beat the unit to pieces right there in the store to get the dvd out of it !!! I will NEVER but anything from RCA again !!

Bad Power Supply

I belive we bought this unit in August of 2001. We've only used it maybe 15-20 times since then, and no real problems until today. No light, no sound. Tried another outlet. No doubt about it, the power supply is TU on this bad boy. Then I look on the web and find all the nice folks here with the same problem with this unit. Guess I should check out the model BEFORE I open my wallet. Lesson learned. No more RCA products for me.

Weakness:

Short life span, terrible customer service

Purchased this unit on 8/31/00, and it lasted for a record breaking 1 year and 8 months. It always had a problem with pausing and losing sound briefly, but as of yesterday, the tray opens half way and the DVD is stuck inside. Customer Service (if that is what you call it) was no help, and Radio Shack wasn''t any better. They want to charge me to fix the POS because I didn''t buy an extended warranty. What ever happened to faith in a product? I suggest that everyone with this piece of crap send an email to customer service via www.rca.com. This thing should be recalled!

Strength:

Many features, low profile design.

Weakness:

The player frequently freezes up and then eventually dies after one year of use.

I bought this DVD player in February of 2001. When it worked it worked fine. Unfortunately, the player had a habit of "locking up" on occasion. The only solution would be to pull the plug and plug it in again so it would reconfigure itself. Two days ago I went to turn it on and I got nothing. I though my remote was dead. Changed the batteries, and then I thought my remote was broken. Tried my remote on my sister''s player (the same model) and her player turned on. This POS had burned out. No power. Just surveying this board it is apparent that this is a particular problem that is common to this product, it is obvious that RCA has screwed yet more customers (much like their TV problems a few years ago).

ummmm...it doesn''t work very long...

how can you sell a product that is continually having issues with power supply. my 5215 as well as several others have the problem of the mysterious won''t turn on problem. plus they want you to pay somewhere around the range of $85 to send it off. please...

Strength:

Priced reasonable. Slim design.

Weakness:

Overheating Barely survives the 90 day warranty.

Stay away from this product. This unit lasted me about 8 months, and my average usage is 1x month. Like others before me have said, unit will not even turn on processor overheating problems. I will have to take apart just to salvage my DVD that is currently in it. Since it is past 90 day warranty (by 180 days) RCA won''t touch it without $90 "labor charges." Don''t waste your $90 get a different one.

Strength:

S-Video, Tru-Surround, Easy to use, Nice Menus, Small remote, Composite Video

Weakness:

Unit must be out in the open air so it dose not overheat

Over all i have been very happy with this DVD player. it gives the beginner a great picture and sound quality if you dont have all the extras. I have found that S-video and hooking up the sound to my two channel sterio with its Tru-Suround feater gives you a nice setup. I think the trick to using this player is proper ventalation.

Strength:

For the short amout of time it actually works (when it works), the unit gives a great picture.

Weakness:

I dont even know where to begin. In 1 year and three months,I''ve actually been able to use this product for about 11 months.

I bought this unit since I have an RCA television that I liked. The first one lasted about 8 months, then started giving incompatible disk errors on previously ''good'' dvds. I got a replacement unit for $70 (I complain well and got them to knock it down). The first replacement unit lasted a month. Then, same problem. Got a free replacement for this one (#2 for those counting). Lasted 6 weeks. Then, same problem. Free replacement #3 played all my dvds without incompatible disk errors but failed to turn on after 5 weeks. Free replacement #4 worked for three weeks. It failed to read some of the dvds the previous unit read, so i reset the unit as directed on the web site (hold power button and and skip forward button). The unit then would not turn on, even after unplugging it from the wall to reset it. I''ll be on the phone on Monday to get another one, but only because I am determined to make this as entirely unprofitable for RCA as possible. The unit (5215) is absolute crap. If you have one with problems complain till you are blue in the face, asking for reduction in price on the first unit, and free replacement thereafter. I am on unit number 5, and they (RCA Customer Support) still insist that "it must just be bad luck you are having - no one else has *any* problems with those units."

Everything

This piece of crap ... worked great for about 2 dozen movies, then all of a sudden one day it stops reading my favorite dvd''s ... :/ I turned it off, reset it, unplugged it ... nothing. Then I bought a lens cleaner and it started working .. for 1 measly movie. It seems I got one of the buggy b4stards. I turned it off and let it cool for an hour or so and now it''s playing a movie. I''m sure it''ll screw up again after this movie :/ I would never buy an RCA/Thompson piece of crap again. DONT BUY THEIR JUNK!
