Weakness:

Picture froze on certain DVD's. Some had some scratches, others didn't....had to replace it.

It's a great product, and I havent got anything bad to put my finger on. The model is a couple of years old now, so there might be better models available, but not at this price I think. Doesn't match the rest of my system, but what the heck. I love it. Only downside was that I had to replace my first model, because of problems to read certain DVD's. U571 was my first DVD it wouldn't finish. Picture froze at 44 min. Switched the copy for a new one, and had the same problem. Also had problems with two new DVD's. Removed the dust and some fingerprints on them, and they worked ok, but I still would imagine it should read them anyway. The new model I just recieved works excellent.

Wonderful product.
I have yet to experience lipsync problems, and I hope to avoid them. :-)
All in all, super stuff. It´s also quite capable with CD´s(and certainly with the 24/96 ones).

Strength:

sound with DVD and CD

Weakness:

slowmotion

I don't understand some problems that are in the previous reviews.
OK the slowmotion isn't good, but who cares if you have a great sound and a great picture.
Playing CDs i don't know at this price any other player who plays CDs so well.I have replaced my old CD player(DENON) because when i arrive at home with pionneer i put both playing CDs and DENON had no chance.I don't know any CD player for US$500 better than 717.
In picture quality i think it's also very good. With dark films it plays very well with lots of light.By the way do you know why 717 win EISA award???? Because of its picture.

Strength:

Solid player, great picture, awesome sound, handles dirt and scratches without any problem, Solid remote. Plays VCD's without any problems.

Weakness:

Sometimes slow at operating, layer change sometimes takes a second or two. Forward and reverse is horrible but usable..

I was searching like crazy for a good player to meet my demands, and those being good picture, sound quality, vcd capability, cd-r, and not too scratch/dirt sensitive. I ended my search by buying the 717 (Actually I got the Metz DE81 which is the same player launched under the Metz brand to match their line of quality Televisions). What can I say, I am perfectly happy and can really recommend it, the picture quality is tops and the sound is just awesome. If you have some additional loot to spend on the player get the 737 instead (Progressive Scan yay). Oh and this player has dual scart/video out. Good job Pioneer.

Strength:

SOUND, SOUND and SOUND. The picture is sharp, lots of outputs, light but comfortable remote, its beutiful to look at, its heavy and massive and a lot more

Weakness:

can´t name anything special

One word, WOW! Whatch Matrix and you will see. Ibought it before Christmas and I must say I´m very impressed. The picture is sharp, the sound is amazing, its very beutiful to look at and there is handful of settings. I haven´t noticed the lip sync problem, even on Face Off.
So in summary BUY it with confidence.

Strength:

Extremely good picture and sound, two lasers(one for DVD and one for CD), a lot of outputs, works excellent with VSA-E06, makes almost no noise.

Weakness:

None.

This is an excellent product from Pioneer. And it seems others agree with me: This DVD-player is actually awarded by EISA as the DVD-player of the year 1999-2000.

If you've bought this product, you will soon notice that you will have to set the sharpness to full yourself. This will make you see that this really is a great dvd-player. Both sound and picture are signifcantly better than any other DVD-player I've tried.

Another big pluss for this product is that it's got two lasers. To play a CD on the DV-717 works excellent. It can easily compare to many other expensive CD-players.

Strength:

Excelent Sound, Great as a CD Player, Fluid DVD Playback Framerate

Weakness:

Picture Quality (Color Definitions?)

I'm not into technical details. I just wanted a good player that would fit nicely with my Audiolab amplifier, my speakers and my Panasonic TV.
When I went auditioning players, I first compared the sound quality (cd and dvd) and the DV-717 cleary standed out from all of the rest. Then I quickly compared picture quality, saw no big differences and settled for this player.
So, sound is excelent, framerate is excelent, everything seemed excelent (as I had been told).
But, recently I noticed a picture malfunction. Some colors, specially red, seem to be out of place, they seem to be more to the left than the rest of the picture thus deforming a it a little. That is very noticeable on red letters over black background and on some skin tones where I can cleary see that there's a lack of color at the right side whereas at the left the color seems to overflow.
I also noticed that such problem is a little decreased when using RGB output instead of S-Video.
Blade's intro is a good sequence to check for such problem.
I still think this is a great DVD Player, but two friends of mine have DV-717s and when I told them about the problem, they discovered that their players do the same thing.

So, can't give a rate as high as I first expected.

(PS: if anyone knows anything about this picture malfunction, please e-mail me!)

Picture Quality (Color Definitions?)

Ok,I guess I am not very good at making reviews, mainly because I'm not into technical details. I just wanted a good DVD Player that would fite nicely into my Audiolab 8000A, my Epos Speakers and my Panasonic TX28PK1F TV and that was good at playing dvds and also audio cds.
When I went to my retail shop to choose a player, I cared first of all for the sound quality and the DV-717 cleary standed out from all of the rest. Then I quickly compared picture quality saw no big differences and settled for this DVD Player.

I also noticed that such problem is a little decreased when using RGB output instead of S-Video, but picture quality also decreases a lot.
The movie where I can better notice that problem is Blade, specially in the main titles.

Anyway, I still think this is a great DVD Player altough I don't understand the reason for this problem. Two friends of mine have DV-717 and after I told them they also found that their players also do the same thing!

So, can't give a rate as high as I first expected.

Strength:

Picture, Sound - midrange/treble/vocals

Weakness:

poor bass (but could be my amp)

The DV717 is a great looking DVD player - resplendent in it's champagne finish - which is used more for music than for movies. I have hundreds of CDs but only four DVDs (Matrix, Blade, True Romance and Stop Making Sense). I find that the DV717 does very well with music that isn't too bass heavy. Deep bass seems to be particularly slow so I've been experimenting with my choice of amps. I own a Sony STR-DA50ES Receiver which drive, for stereo, a pair of B & W DM 603s2's. My local hi-fi dealer loaned me a Harman Kardon AVR500 receiver and once this was connected to my DV717 the music had gained LOADS more bass but all sense of clarity disappeared - vocals were lost and everything sounded so much more closed in (far too WARM). I gave the H/K back to my dealer and have now ordered a Rotel RB-991 power amp to hook up to the Sony receiver. Hopefully this will make my speakers sing. I'll find out next week when the power-amp arrives...
