Does anybody know if there is a U.S. model equivalent to this one? Or why this model is not available in the U.S.? Thanks.

Review of DV-717, Austalia
Had my Pioneer DV-717 for about a month now. I have well over 100 DVDs with 99.9% of them region 1. Of all the DVDs I have ran, I have not seen any lip-sync issues bar the R1 "Lost in Space" DVD at the start of the Robinson family home scene and Lacy Chabert is on screen, it appears to be a fraction out of sync but I think it has more to do with the sound editing on the movie, just her voice..perhaps ?!?

No other DVDs exhibited this problem. I have also tested the R4 version of The 5th Element, a disk well known for lip-sync issues on my 717 Pioneer but again, I cannot fault the DVD or 717. However, I am using the optical out and not RCA into my Sony E9000ES pre-amp (running the 1.10C mod).

Other than that, this is a top notch machine and the remote kills my older Pioneer 505, god I hate those button full forward or rewinds. I have no CD-Rs so I can't say if they work but other reported no issues with CD-Rs.

I have not enabled the digital noise reduction feature of the unit. S-video is fed straight into my Pionerr 50" WS RPTV and the picture is AWESOME ! I am currently using the s-video connection into my RPTV. I have tried the RGB via the SCART to SCART but found it exhibited colour bleed on some scenes which was not there on the s-video. The SCART to SCART cable was an Interdyn, length of 2 metres and the s-video cable is an AR, length 2.8 metres.

Macrovision has not been turned off on the player yet but it's a question of time so I cannot say if it will effect the image at this time.

I also use the 717 as my CD player into my Sony E9000ES and the sound is superb - like the speakers have come alive but this could be due to the combination of the Sony and the Elektra 6ch power amp....

All in all, a fantastic auto-detect multi-region player. Highly recommended.

Bought the 717 one month ago. Terrific player in every respect apart from the lip sync problem. I find the problem totally unacceptable. For a player in the £500 plus bracket from such a manufacturer I would at least expect the audio to match the video track. If you like foreign dubbed films then this will be a winner with you, otherwise FORGET IT!
Sorry Pioneer, I feel very strongly about the quality of the product and your attitude towards rectifying the problem.

I have had this player for 4 months now and I am very happy with it. I love the remote (as remotes go that is) and believe that Pioneer have excelled in all areas with this player.

The only lip sync problem I have noticed was on the region 1 (my player is multi region modded) DVD of Lost in Space. (Seems to be a problematic DVD this one so I am eagerly awaiting the R4 release this next month to compare.)

This player looks classy, has top CD audio performance and great DVD features. Slow motion and scanning are a little average (that is jerky) but are more than made up for by a top notch picture.

If you are looking for a DVD player in the upper middle price bracket ($1000AUS to $1,400AUS) then get a demo of this model and see for yourself.

Top marks to Pioneer for this great DVD player.

Lip Synch Problem

After my previous review which highlighted the lip synch problems of the Pioneer. I ventured my cash on a Denon 2500 modified by Techtronics. Two machines later and after loads of problems, with the Denon or the Techtronics multi- region mod, I elected to go with the Pioneer 717 ( with the Techtronics E-Mod). Since then I have been a happy bunny. The Pioneer gives all I want in picture and sound e.g. plowing the waves on "DAS BOOT". The quality of build gives the confidence that it will continue to do so for some time. The Lip synch problems are still there but on thankfully few DVDs. P.S I have still not had a reply from Pioneer - Great product, crap U.K. marketing.

A wonderfull product. I was concerned about the Lip Sync problems mentioned in other reviews. I have not seen the problem yet I now have 58 DVD's so It must be either fixed or I am very lucky.

Strength:

- picture
- plays cd-r
- gold plated connections at the back
- outputs
- cd sound quality

Weakness:

- manual (realy bad, but the player is easy to use)
- my philips remote control can't learn all the infrared beams from the pioneer (only play, stop, fwd, rew, pause)
- analogue output is weaker than normal

This is the best player is saw till now. My first goals were to get a dvd-player with the best cd-audio and a player that can read cd-r discs.
I know a lot of cd players and i must say that this Pioneer stands up to $400 cd-players. You'd be better of when you buy a cd-player AND a dvd-player at this price (like the NAD 540 and the Pioneer 515). But i wanted one player that does it all. And i can accept the cd quality (as my former cd-player costed $300)...
The cd-r discs are no problem. It has 2 seperate 24bit/96Khz D/A converters!

I have to say that the Sony 525 had better and faster dvd possibilies (better menu, faster skipping, easier to use), but this Pioneer is much better in playing cd-audio discs (including cd-r discs).

I have used my 717 for about two weeks now connected to a brand new Yamaha RX-v795. I am using the Yamaha-remote for my 717, my TV and my VCR. This 717 is codefree and I have watched the movies "Sphere", "The Fifth Element" and "Dark City". The sound and picture is excellent!! I have ordered my first DTS-movie: "12 Monkeys" and I am looking forward to this special experience.Crisp colors and the black is really black! It's very easy to set up and it looks great, too.
