Strength:

Reliability, chipset

Weakness:

Flimsyness, noisy loader

Well, I work at a very high end audio store, but we were looking for a good cheap CD player. I was wandering around costco when I saw the Pioneer. I picked it up and brought it to my shop. We tested it out with many CD's, including the burmester CD's. It played the Burmester CD that usually won't even play in our wadia 270. Good job pioneer! If anybody buys one of these, put a thin layer of silicone on the inside cover, that quites things down nicely!

Disc freezes

Bought a DV-525 after reading your reviews here. Setup was easy but that was it, tested several movies and none would play continuously for more than 5 minutes.
It was audio/video freezes one after the other preceeded by this horrible and high pitch sound coming out of my surround system. The Matrix was just terrible, it was like viewing a movie frame after frame after frame .... just terrible.
Knowing about The Matrix problems i tried several other movies, same result. Even The Insider, which i had acquired recently, would audio/video freeze after a few minutes.
Maybe it's my player, since most of your reviews are so good.
By the way, all these movies work great on my computer DVD.

Strength:

-Video/Audio quality -Cost -Design -CDR -Compability

Weakness:

-Loud -No zoom

This is a f*cking great DVD player! Plays all DVDs, even the most demanding ones like "The Matrix" smoothly. There are unfortunately some issues because of the very loud tray, but this is not noticable when watching a movie - and can be solved by moving the player into a closed cabinet. The sound and video quality is extremely good, and the audio quality is so good, it's just as good as a CD player when playing CD's, if not better.
Highly reccomended!

Best DVD player I ever watched, plays anything shoved in it

Weakness:

Awesome picture the menu options are a hell of a lot better than the 505 and unlick the 505, was already multi zoned.
It runs primo with my pioneer reciever the 509. I use fibre and the sound is amazing.

I recently went to a friends house and watched the same stuff on a sony DVD and stereo and it didn't even come close. The movie had quick flashes of other scenes that poped up during the movie.

I would recomend this player to everybody.

Nice excellent picture, Plays everything you got.

I just got my pioneer today off of ebay for $200 brandnew. What a deal. Anyways it was easy to hook up, using s-video, and digital optical wire. Popped in the Pokemon dvd that came with it, and wow, stunning pictures, no problems at all. As for the disk tray, no noise what so ever. Beats my brothers sony 5disc dvd player that cost him $500. It can't even play cd-r's. Well, all in all, a great deal to add to my audiophile collection.

value-for-money. plays anything (so far)

Weakness:

CD audio not as good as my CD player

bought this a couple of months ago. says code 3 at the back but the shop says the local dealer has set it to multicode. Put Matrix code 3 to test it; no problems - picture was great. Next tried Air Force One (code 1); same here, no problems. motor sound? what sound? my room is VERY quiet & I still can' hear any motor sound... Anyway, over I'd say I'm pleased with this purchase, especially given it's y first DVD. used the supplied cables to get video at first; rather disappointing. but when I hooked it up using the S-video, man, what a difference!

Strength:

easy to play, no problems with any disc, scratch etc etc

Weakness:

no zoom, no fast forward or rewind, no internal clock. remote clumsy and small...need extra set of eyes to see buttons.

For me an excellent product for the price I paid. Got it in gold finish, factory default multi region and good price. only problem no zoom and controlled fast forward (x2,x4,x8 etc). Stereo sounds from CD okay but not up to CD player standart. I dont need DD/DTS decoding anyway, receivers/amp will do that...

Strength:

Excellent sound!

Weakness:

Picture a bit uneven from time to time.
Sound from player itself is very high and annoying.
Remote control crap.

Basic player that would have been a lot better if the motor sound had been non exsistent. Audio quality is really good but what it gains there it lacks in video quality. It's very uneven from time to time and there's a lot of drop outs on many movies. When played on my Panasonic L-50 there are no such problems. Finally, the remote. What can you say other that it's crap. You'll have to learn all the buttons by heart, otherwise you'll have to turn on your lights everytime you want to do anything. Furthermore the buttons are to small.

Strength:

Great picture, easy to set up and use

Weakness:

FF/Rew Scan is in 3-second intervals
No zoom

I bought my unit in February, 2000 and I couldn't be happier with it. This is my first unit. I did a lot of internet research before purchase, and the Pioneer came out ahead -- hands down.

I don't have the problem with the noisy tray, as some users have mentioned. As a matter of fact, I don't hear it at all. No problems.

I don't really care for the scanning function. It skips to every 3 seconds, and I find myself missing the part I'm looking for. While 3 seconds doesn't sound like much, it adds up if you bypass the scene you are looking for.

Overall, I really love the unit. I don't use it to play CD's. I've only put in 1 CD, and didn't care for the sound quality. It doesn't compare to my Onkyo player. I didn't buy it to play audio CD's -- so no big deal.

I would recommend this DVD player to anyone looking for a great low-end starter DVD. The quality is an incredible bargain for the money.
