Strength:

Good sound, great price

Weakness:

Cheap build. Not as solid feeling as the Denons or Sonys

Working great of the RCA plugs. However, having problems with the s-video. While watching Blair Witch, the player would cut video output during a pitch dark scene (sound comes in great). Not sure if it is the cable or the player. Has anyone experienced similar problems?

Strength:

Picture quality, sound quality, ability to play Video CDs, Component Outputs

Weakness:

small buttons on remote

I was looking for a DVD player to replace my Panasonic DVD-105U. I was deciding over the Sony DVPS-330 or Pioneer DV-525. I chose the Pioneer because of the ratings on this site. The Pioneer had a higher rating than the Sony, so I decided to purchase the Pioneer. When it arrived, I had it hooked up in les than 5 minutes. I tested "The Matrix" and "Saving Private Ryan". I was astounded when I heard the surround sound in the two movies mentioned, I was blown away. The movies sounded better than on my Panasonic. The options for the different video modes (cinema, animation, standard) is a great feature. Setting this option to cinema for movies made the picture sharper. The only downside to this great system is the small buttons on the remote. But, after you get used to it, it will not be a problem. Regarding the complaints about the noise of the drive on this DVD player, the only time the disc drive is loud is during thee time you load a disc or take out a disc. While a movie is playing it is silent. I highly recommend the Pioneer DV-525 to anyone looking for an affordable DVD player. At $250, this player is cheape considering you get component video out, ability to play many types of discs (VCD, CD-R, CD-RW).

Strength:

Plays any format you can throw at it DVD VCD(pal) VCD(ntsc)CD-R CD-RW CD

Weakness:

Tray is kinda noisy when you eject it menus cover the whole screen

I went to circuit city and the pushy sales man talked me into buying the proscan POS er I mean ps8682p. I brought it home and it was noisy I mean wake up yhe dead noisy it also had problems changing titles I sat there for 4min once wating for it to change titles and it just ejected the disk. (brad new disk too) So I returned it and got this player mostly because I herd it plays CD-Rs. I brought it home and have had no problems with it yet. It out performs the proscan in every way. Only problem I have is the menus cover the whole screen, it has the color change on the menu but unfortunatly you have to exit the menu to see what happened, and if you don't like it you have to go back into the menu to change it. The tray is noisy when ejecting but who cares unless you are planning on playing with the eject button this is not an problem. The audio is also excelent I have the digital out hooked up to my JVC RX-6000VBK (haven't gotten around to getting the optical cable yet) with JBL SCS125s and everything sounds great. I highly recomend this player to any one, If you need CD-R and CD-RW compatability, this is the player to buy.

Strength:

Good video and sound

Weakness:

Loud annoying tray

I was encouraged by the good review in the April (?) Home Theater Mag, as well as a couple British audio mags. I was happy with the video quality, even though I only have composite video on my TV. The sound quality on CDs was OK, but not better and perhaps worse than my old, cheap CD player. Unfortunately, I brought it back because of the tray noise, which continued throughout the movie. I could hear it running during quiet passages. Also made me worry about what it would sound like if the parts wear in a year or two. Can't imagine it could be that hard for Pioneer to fix. Going to try the Philips 825AT next. I'm bringing a DVD to the store to try out other models for noise.

Strength:

Great starter player...gotta love that VCD,CDR play feature

Weakness:

Ugh, what a crappy remote...unlit and tiny buttons

Excellent little starter player for the money...I highly recommend it to the first-time DVD enthusiast. I've thrown everything at this player from my own burned CDR's to VideoCD's to the Matrix platter and it still comes out on top. If you want to truly experience DVD digital quality, use the composite outputs if your TV can support it. Man, what a difference, even from S-Video! All in all a great little player if you can look past the remote.

I just picked up the DV-525 this weekend and love it! The picture is great and I have had no signs of lip-sync problems. The remote sucks though. I did a lot of comparing and for the price, this pioneer is a winner!

Strength:

Beautiful picture and sound quality, Excellent Value

Weakness:

Tiny buttons on remote.

After researching DVD players on this web site, I found the
DV-525 to be very popular.

I purchased the player at Best Buy for $299 (and sent away
for the Pioneer $50 rebate). I have been very impressed with
the picture and sound quality. I have watched the following movies: The Matrix, Terminator 2, 1941, The Mummy
all without any problems.

I also tried some CD-R's I have burned on my PC and they sound fine. I'm anxious to play some VCD's on this player.

Only minor complaint is the small buttons on the remote. I'll either get used to it or use my Pioneer learning remote.

All in all, a very nice player for the price. Good features to price ratio.

Strength:

Great Price, lots of output options

Weakness:

poor remote, flimsy disc tray (relatively poor build quality), useless without remote, little bit noisy (not enough to be a real problem though)

This is a great player for the money! Clear picture and good sound. Plays CDR's and CD-RW's and VCD's without a hiccup. Good sound with audio CD's also. The remote sucks. Once memorized, it can be lived with though. NO menu buttons on the face of the player, a problem if you misplace the remote. Noisy, but not bad enough to detract from the overall rating of the player. Overall, a definite good buy. if the remote was better it would get 5 stars across the board.
