The unit I purchased was defective. The DVD droor made a horrible grinding noise when it opened and closed and the remote didn't work. Also, the box was made of cheap paper and the unit itself looked cheap, especially the droor. I figured that Pioneer was having quality problems with this model so I opted for the Toshiba 2109. The 2109 is an awesome deal and a great player.

Very happy with this unit, does all the things I was looking for in a player. Picture is great(50" mit rear proj)
and sound is awesome connected to JVC RX-888. $299 with a $50 rebate at Circuit City. I was actually waiting for a recordable unit but they're not due out until sometime next year and the introduction prices are too high.

Strength:

Price, flexibility (it plays DVD, VCD's, CD's, CD-R's)

Weakness:

Minimal tray noise (big deal :P)

When I was looking for a good DVD player under $500, I came up with the Pioneer DV-525. I had to have VCD playback capability since I enjoy import films and this was one of the few that had it (if not the only one that was readily available to me in that price). The features are smooth and fast. People seem to gripe about the tray noise, but it doesn't bother me a bit. $300-$50 rebate -10% Best Buy preferred customer and it's a steal. Add 5 DVD's and the 14 rentals and I couldn't have asked for anything more!
I've had no problems and will never regret this purchase (and I'm picky!). Get this one KTB!

remote,clunky tray noisy transport

After reading reviews here, this seemed like a great unit and excelent value, but... how are you guys enjoyig this noisy machine? Maybe I was expecting too much, but when it sounds like a battery controled car even 15 feet away with the sound turned up at a moderate level... maybe it was because it was made in China or maybe I got a bad unit. And my wife thinks I'm going deaf! Back it went! By the way, what little I saw of the picture was only marginally better than the same movie on vhs on my Sony 53xbr.

Strength:

price, freebies, CD-R compatibility

Weakness:

tray noise (i guess)

This DVD player is the bomb! This is my first foray into the world of digital video, so I am easily impressed with the video and sound of the player, but i haven't seen any flaws that many other DVD players have with playback. I needed CD-R capability, and with the 525 I have it. I also loved the fact that I get 5 free movies to start my personal DVD collection. Just ordered the matrix, too! I can't wait

Strength:

Better than average picture, very good audio, affordable DVD player.

Weakness:

Tray abit loud at low volumes, but barely noticable.

The only way to get better visual and audio improvement over the 525 is too spend twice as much. This is the winner in the mid level dvd player hands down. The only thing I did not like was the remote control.Buttons too tight together and hard to recognize.

Vivid video, awesome audio, simple
setup, inexpensive

Weakness:

I have noticed none of the reported
lip sync or transport noise problems
rather a player able to play all
my problem disc's flawlessly. This
is an exceptionally fine performer that will enhance any HT system. Highly recommended and one that you should audition particularly during Pioneer's bonus day program.

Strength:

great value, easy to use, good video and audio quality

Weakness:

filmsy remote, lack of details on the LED display, mine is a region 1 machine, no PAL to NTSC output

I got it for CDN$449, but few days later I found out it can be had for only CDN$398...
As mentioned before, this basic player provides very good video and audio quality. Despite the cheap-looking yet functionable remote, the machine is very easy to use. I've played several North America and Hong Kong DVD and I have absolutely no problem at all. It also plays VCD well too! Actually the PBC of VCD can be turned off by directly selecting chapter numbers instead of simply pressing "play" button.
Because my Yamaha receiver is an old pro-logic only RX-V850, I still don't have chance to test out the digital out. However, so far the two-channels analogue out provides satisfactory sound quality.
Also, I don't know why, but the loading meachanism of my mahcine is actually quite quiet. It only has neglectable noice when it is loading discs. It is absolutely quiet when I play discs. Mine is made in Malaysia. Does it make a difference? I will only give 4 stars before of its lack of features, but who needs zoom anyway....

Strength:

Cheap cheap price; plays CD-Rs

Weakness:

Lack of buttons on panel and info on LCD

Got it for $199.63 from Best Buy, plus $50 and 5 DVD/13 rentals rebate I'm going to get.

Quality-wise, it's no difference from the Panasonic I've used before. The main reason for getting this instead of the Panasonic is that it plays CD-Rs 'cause I produce my own music.

This a slight problem with my machine. The screen is shifted to the left a little bit. But it's not a problem when viewing movies since the shift is very minor.

For VCD playback, PBC must be used; no way to turn it off. That's good for Karaoke, but not good if I want to play all the songs once.

In short, it has all the basic functions, nothing extra. But for this price, it's a very very good deal.

Strength:

rare 96kHz digital output, sharp picture, great anamorphic conversion

Weakness:

none...and if anyone has a problem with it email me and i will prove you wrong

ok for all of you people who cannot seem to stop b*tching about the remote, refer to the Eagles song number 2 on their album..."get over it" Of all the strengths that this player has, the remote, and the non-existant zoom feature are trivial annoyances. And now for those who hear the buzzing transport. Big Freaking deal, do you know of any cd/dvd players/transports that don't make some sort of buzz other than the $3000+ players? if you do let me know. besides i personally haven't heard a d*mn thing. Now for those of you that don't have any clue why this is one of the best dvd players on the market and the best in its price range, let me give you a short breakdown. Pioneer is the only mass market company to offer a dvd player that outputs the full 96kHz bandwidth for the audio tracks of the dvd's. this means you will get the entire audio track from the disc with incredible detail, clarity, and depth. Right now most processors and other audio pieces are currently upgrading to this sampling frequency as an industry standard. not to mention that 192 kHz is shortly on its way. Anyway to make a long story short, the pioneer 525 is the best, and yes i do mean the best, dvd player in its price range on the market. the picture is crisp and vivid, the sound is amazing, and hell it plays cdr's and vcd's. i know there is better out there, but at this price you might get the foot of that better player. if anyone has any questions about this player about whether they should get it or not, email me, i would be very happy to aid in your decision, but please stop going off on the remote and the buzzing.

my system consists of:
Magnepan MMG's L/R
magnepan MMC1 center
acoustic research 801's rear
pioneer 525
cal delta cd transport
cal alpha tube dac
counterpoint sa-12 hybrid tube/solid state amp
pioneer vsx906s (using as pre/processor)
