Strength:

Features offered at the price, got mine at auction for $169 + shipping. Plays cd-r's.

Weakness:

Construction and remote

Not a bad dvd player for the current price range. Love the fact that it'll play cd-r's. Remote, like most pioneer products is not very friendly. Good entry point player.

Strength:

Great player for $

Weakness:

Remote

Purchased this from Value America for $199.00 great price, although I did not know at the time they are not an authorized dealer.
My player that I replaced with this one was Pioneer DV-414 and for over a year I had no problems every disk I own played on it.
Pioneer was plauged by posts on the internet NG's complaining about lip sync problems, which were probably problems with the disk rather than the machine.
My Receiver is a Pioneer 608 and both work great for me.
Well worth the price don't hesitate this is the one to buy.

Strength:

cdr, cdrw, video cd, great picture and sound

Weakness:

tray mechanism is a little loud

I know the tray mechanism is a little loud, but if you are using this unit in home theatre you should never hear it during playback. This is a great forum, but I am sick of seeing FOOLS(read a couple of reviews below)who would rate this player under 4* because the tray is loud while opening. If you have problems hearing the disk spin, why not turning on your receiver and listening to the sound output instead. There are other players IN THE PRICE RANGE that are comparable, but none that are decidedly better. If you want to play cdr/cdrw, it is the only good choice. Don't be conned out of buying this unit because some people were not responsible with their reviews. For those with the innacurate reviews: It is better to be thought a fool then to write your opinion and remove all doubt!

Weakness:

Remote, Noisy when playing disks

The DV-525 is a great DVD player for the price (paid less than $200 after rebates). Great picture and sound.

I've had one problem with the DVD player so far. During the credits of South Park, the audio would cut out (the red light that indicates the Digital output turned off too). I've gotten this to happen numerous times during different parts of the credits of South Park. I got the sound to come back by stopping the movie and then starting it again. Luckily the player remembers where you stopped. So far this is the only movie that I've had problems with (6 other movies played perfectly).
-Anyone else have this problem?-

My only other gripes are about the remote (I keep pressing the wrong buttons) and noise when playing the discs. I put my DVD player behind a glass door to keep the noise levels down. You can still hear the dvd player spin during silent parts of the movies.

Strength:

Excellent sound and visuals for the price.

Weakness:

Remote Control

I run this DVD through a Yamaha HTR-5150 receiver with Energy Take 5 speakers.

Overall I find the sound and video very impressive, and would recommend this DVD player to anyone.

However, if you are the kind of person that flinches at the smallest flaws in your system you will find the following annoying.

The remote control is awful, but honestly most people will only use Enter, the directional keys, play and stop so it's bearable.

Lastly, I apologize if anyone has mentioned this already but if you're playing a movie that is double layered you will notice a one second to one half second pause when the movie changes layers. I can live with it, but I know some people find it very annoying and simple hate it when a DVD player doesn't buffer that layer.

Strength:

Simple user interface, solid video quality, excellent error correction capability, great value

Weakness:

lacks bells and whistles, relatively light construction

So far it's been flawless through a dozen of movies I threw at it continuously including matrix and bugslife. I have to admit that this unit's transport makes more noise than the other two units(530D & A120) but it's far from being any kind of annoyance at all. I like the simple interface free of ittybitty features especially.

530D has built in ac3 decoder but I'd much rather opt for a dedicated decoder. And IMHO this one looks much better than A120, if it matters at all.

Got this one at the goodguys for $299 and it came with a pokemon dvd, $50 mail-in rebate and 5 pre-selected mail-in dvds. For its solid performance and value I'm happy to give it solid 5.

Strength:

Very nice sound and picture, Price, EEPROM retention (retains movie location even when the power is turned off)

Weakness:

Remote - but who cares - use universal

I purchased this unit from Costco for $249.00 minus $50.00 rebate w/5 movies and 13 rentals. What a value! I owned another Pioneer DVD w/DD (can't remember the model at the moment). This unit cost about 1/2 as much and is about twice better with the exception of the remote. I did notice some lip sync issues while viewing Pokemon (just kidding!). This unit appears to meet my needs perfectly.

Weakness:

Pretty damn good for its price. A very decent player that can play cdrs as well as cdrw disc(not many do). Also be on the look out for versions of this player that happen to be All Region(including Pal format)

Strength:

Very good picture quality. All of the needed features.

Weakness:

None so far.

There have been a lot of reviews on video quality. I just wanted to say that the audio on this is excellent! I am playing CDs on it and running it through my Bryston system (Dahquist speakers). The audio reproduction with this is very good. It gives the music a warm sound I usually associate with mid to high end CD players.
