The Panasonic DVD-C220D has the feel of a rush job. The design IS flawed and after a months use I have detected problems with picture breakup in areas of the screen (I don't know the technical term, sorry). They are small and infrequent and don't last very long but are very annoying. Additionally, and most annoying, some of my older CDs don't play all the way through now! I have found four like this now and havn't even been trying!
I have 52 more days to take it back to Target so I hope something better comes out before that time. My advice is to beware of the Panasonic DVD-C220D. Best wishes to all of you: LARRY FROM MARYLAND

I was real hyped for the DVD-C220U I got. The Press Release sounded great and I needed a new CD-Changer and was ready for DVD. The Panasonic 5-Posision Changer seemed a perfect fit. It turns out, however, that while the sound and visual are okay (but by no means fantastic), the unit is designed so badly it is almost laughable. The front display is not very informative, you cannot get time left without going through the menu system, the five disc lights are nuts, and you have to hit the button the open/close (not just press on the carriage) to name a few design problems. I can't imagine who put this one together. This one gets the big heave-ho soon.

I compared the Panasonic 220 and Sony 650 and found that the Panasonic was more designed for DVD playing and the Sony was designed more for CD playing. This being a Five Disc DVD/CD Player I think most people would be happy with the 650 since the Multi-Disc Format is more suited for CD playing. The price was $100.00 more for the Sony 650 so you will need to take that into consideration as well. For me the choice was a No-Brainer.

This unit was a true dog. I'm jist glad I buy at stores with 100% return policies. I rarely return but I like to know I can and the DVD-C220 will be the first time in about four years.

Strength:

Reliable, quality, many cd changer features

Weakness:

Doesn't support CD-R, CD-RW, or MP3. No zoom. Remote is not backlit.

Great quality 5 disk dvd changer that is reliable. Good for playing cd's since it has lots of features.

Used a Samsung dvd player (single disk) and liked the zoom feature, and joystick remote.

No self respecting audiophile would use this for music and I really don't need 5-discs for movies. The sound is disctinctly below par and the display is terrible. And those lights!

Yeah, I'm interested in the 200 disc changer too, but it isn't out yet, and no one knows whether it is going to be any good either. Let's wait until it's released before we proclaim it as better than this Panasonic. I OWN one, and frankly, it's not a bad player at all. The picture and sound quality are on par with other sub $500 players, and it will spin 5 discs to boot.

Thanks for the insight Toby (not!). Oooh, a 200 disc dvd player - so what, you can't rate a current DVD player against something in the future. And besides - the Sony 650 is $150 more and the quality difference in sound and video isn't that different. I bought both and compared and it isn't worth an extra $100-$150 for the Sony. But thanks for ripping a product with a One star that you don't even own and can't contest to.

Strength:

Component video outs, DTS, DD, 5 disk changer, above average video, above average audio

Weakness:

Changer controls/indicators, less than standard readout features

This unit is an excellent value for its cost ($429 at Costco). Yes, it does have a few annoying idiosyncracies, but the video is respectable and the audio is superior to the Sony's 330 and 650. This unit is a very attractive buy for those on a budget that are looking for lots of features.
If you are seriously considering this unit, do not pay any attention to the few highly biased, ignorant kids that keeping rating it with a single star. They have yet to figure out how to provide a useful evaluation of the product.

Strength:

Great Remote, multiple connection options, 5 discs and watch movies all damn day! Virtual surround.

Weakness:

Noisy carousel(so what!)No CD-R playback

When I purchased the unit I only had a 19" RCA TV. I was very impressed by the picture qualtiy and the loads of features on most DVD's.

I have since bought a great JVC TV and I can now really apreciate the quality of this unit. I have tried conposite outputs (good), the s-video outputs (great) and component video out with a lousy set of cables (lousy but it was hust the cables). I am now using the s-video cable all of the time.

Just as an FYI the unit will play CD-RW discs but not CD-R.

I would highly recommend this unit, very pleased with the picture, sound and features.
