Strength:

Weakness:

Only works for seven months at a time. Does not play (most) CD-Rs.

Got this DVD in Jan '99. Of course it broke (pixelization, no disc) after seven months. I have an extended warranty and had it fixed at Panasonic service center. Broke again (pixelization, no disc). I still have to send it back.

It's played maybe 75 DVD's in its lifetime.

Last Panasonic anything I will ever buy.

Strength:

Works great; very sharp picture; excellent price

Weakness:

Sometimes a bit slow on layer changes

I have used this player a lot in the 20 months since I bought it in August, 1998. It has performed flawlessly (which is more than I can say for the Denon DVD-1500, which had lip sync problems--common to that model, I am told; returned it for a refund). I have not had any of the failures that have been so widespread with the A-110, especially those that were built June-August, 1998. I've just been lucky, I guess. If my A-110 croaks tomorrow, I will fugure I have gotten my money's worth out of it. I plan to buy the new Panasonic DVD-RV30 as soon as it's available.

Weakness:

When it works, disc pickup is SLOWWWWWW
but it doesn't work anymore!

This piece of garbage has just died on me. Same problem as everyone. Pixelation, no disc message, isn't worth jack !!!

Bought the unit in Aug. 98. It was manufactured June 98.
I don't know how much repair is gonna cost.. but this is the last time I buy Panasonic. I have a Panasonic VCR that also only works on PERFECT tapes. For all other tapes, it just skips with picture and sound.. yes SKIPS!!

If you see Panasonic.. KEEP CLEAR!!

Strength:

Great sound and picture

Weakness:

Remote

Well knock on wood, I am beyond the dreaded timeline everyone speaks of and have played well over a 100 movies on it. I am in either the 14th or 15th month and have had no problems, other than one slight pixelation problem that lasted a second. No lock ups, errors, layer change , lip sync problems or anything else to speak of. Perhaps I'm lucky, lets see how long it lasts. The picture is fantastic. The sound stream is being processed wonderfully. No complaints whatsoever. The remote is ok , would prefer a better layout for the freeze, slow mo buttons.

Strength:

DTS Output, Good Picture Quality, Excellent Audio

Weakness:

Awkward Remote Control

I'm experiencing the same pixellation and "No Disc" error messages that others have written about. I've had the A110 for approximately 14 months. The problem seems to occur after one hour of disc play--the unit starts to skip, lock and jitter and eventually freezes or shuts down.

The problem came on suddenly, and now seems to be getting worse. I'm disappointed with Panasonic product quality and would not recommend this unit. I will not buy another Panasonic DVD product based on the problems I've experienced with the A110.

Those of you who have not experienced problems with this unit are fortunate...I read the reviews and thought that I was going to be spared the hassle of dealing with Panasonic customer service and that the unit I purchased was okay.

Buyers beware--this is an inferior product. Whoever recommended that the A110 be used as a paperweight had the right idea...Panasonic, are you listening?

Strength:

GOOD VALUE FOR INCLUDED FEATURES, IT WILL MAKE AGOOD PAPER WEIGHT AFTER ONE YEAR.

Weakness:

IT GAVE ME THE DREADED "NO DISC" AFTER OWNING IT FOR ONLY 14 MONTHS AND VERY LITTLE USE.

I too read the good reviews before I bought this unit. But it now seems obvious that it was built not to last. It's eary to read the others experience. The time table and symptoms are Identical. I just happened to drop the a110 off for repairs today, pending an estimate I was told by the technician. that the laser is most likely 'fried' at a cost of around $150 to $200. Shame Panasonic. My A110 will be in tomorrows garbage.

Strength:

None come to mind.

Weakness:

Apparently the laser.

I have used the A110 for a year and a half now with no problems (so I thought). Now as I look back on it I returned
a few DVD's because I thought they were bad. Now I'm convinced it was the player, not the DVD's that was bad. The other day I was watching a movie and I paused it to go do something else. I came back a couple of hours later and it had shut itself down. I tried to play it again and all it would say was "no disc". It didn't matter if it was a DVD or an audio disc it still wouldn't read it. I took it back to Good Guys, where I bought it, but it was out of warranty so I would have to pay for shipping and parts and labor on something that should not have broken. I took it to an independent shop and they said it would cost $120 for the laser and $60 for labor. $180!!!! to fix this thing. you can buy a new one for not much more (preferrebly another brand).
Whatever happened to the good old days when you could buy something that would last and if it did happen to break, they had a descent warranty (that you didn't have to pay extra for) that would cover it?! Since I paid $400 for this
thing 1.5 yrs ago I can't give it a good value rating and since it's only good as an artificial reef now I can't give it a very good overall rating either. Sorry to say "It's a piece of junk" but that's just my opinion!

they tend to die

I reviewed this product earlier, and I have to come back because it died after about a year. Right after the warranty went out. The dreaded "no Disk" error.

Strength:

Great audio/video when working. Ease of use

Weakness:

Defects

This is my first DVD player. I have had it since Nov 98. I have never experienced the lip-sync problems listed here. I even have some of the questionable disks such as "Ronin". I did see a chapter skip on the layer switch only once, and that was like the 3rd time I used it. Ive never seen it since. I have however been plagued with the pixelization problem incessantly, but it didnt take 7 or 8 months of use to happen; I noticed it immediately. I always assumed that it was a defective disk, because it didnt happen on every single disk I had; it was random. But I noticed recently that some disks didnt display the same problem in the same spot. But some disk were more susceptible that others. "L.A. Confidential" was a major nightmare trying to view. Ive never had to worry about dirty disks because I only buy them; I dont rent.
When I found this board I learned alot that I didnt know before. After reading over many of the comments on this board I found out that I wasnt the only one experiencing this problem; and that it was most likely the player. I have since sent it in for repair requesting that the firmware be upgraded to the latest version. It was purchased at Circuit City along with a 3 year extended warranty, so hopefully I will not have to endure any of the horrors experienced by others on this board who have had to send theirs into a Panasonic repair center. I will post my results with Circuit City when the player returns. They have indicated to me that it should only take between 7 to 10 working days.
But aside from the pixelization problem, I have found this unit to be a fabulous player for the price. The remote doesnt bother me; and the picture and sound are fantastic.

Strength:

Metal cover looks easy to smash with hammer.

Weakness:

Only good for 18 months (or thereabout. Total POS.

S.O.S. Worked fine for 18 months then started to croak like everybody else's. Blowing cool air into my cabinet keeps it operational for a full movie but you have turn the volume up to 11 and crane your neck to see around the fan. I'll try the KY fix and drill some holes in the shell but after that doesn't work I'm off to buy a new NOT PANASONIC player.
