Strength:

It works for a year.

Weakness:

IT WORKS FOR A YEAR.

I only recently discovered this site. My player actually bit the dust in Sept. of 99. JUST TWO MONTHS AFTER THE WARANTY EXPIRED! Like all of us here, I try to take good care of my equipment, when the problems of skipping first occured, I actually thought that it was my fault. I became paranoid about disc care, and thought it had to be because of my carelessness. When the no disc problem happened, I got rid of the headache maker and bought a Sony (from which I have had NO problems and in my opinion better picture and sound). Two weeks ago I wandered to this site and only then did I discover that I was not alone. This site is like a support group to me. SOP Survivors of Panasonic. If a lawsuit ever gets underway count me in on those jerks! Need I say that that was the first and last panasonic product that will ever be in my home? I knew that I shouldn't have bought any crap made by a company that backed divx. Oh well live and learn and by Sony. And my 1 star rating is actually a zero.

Strength:

DTS

Weakness:

Everything else

I had this DVD player for just over 1 and a half, and it worked fine. Then one day it started to freeze up when I attempted to watch a movie. After, I ran a cleaning disk, the A-110 informed me the DVD movie I was just watching was no longer a valid disc the player could read. No matter what movie I would try to watch after that point would be a valid disc. The next day is would work for a little bit and then the same sequence would happen. Finally, got feed up with the stupid thing and I am going to buy a new player, but not a panasonic for sure.

Strength:

Clear and detailed image, dynamic and detailed sonics

Weakness:

None, for a budget DVD player

This low priced unit has delivered the sonic and visual goods nearly flawlessly for two years. Last month I moved up to Dolby Digital from Pro Logic and was amazed by the sonic improvement. But last week I discovered DTS, which blows DD away, all big fun from a widdo ol' budget DVD player.

I am aware that the A110 could fail/die tonight. And I could not care less. It has delivered high quality home entertainment, under heavy use and in a less than pristine environment, for just $270 bucks for two years. Come on, it's an entry level budget DVD player (that has performed superbly).

Strength:

Works for a year or two.

Weakness:

After a year or two, it becomes next to useless for DVDs.

We have had the same problems others describe. The player worked great for about 2 years, but just recently it has developed problems. On many discs, some that worked before, it will not access certain menus, or scenes, and sometimes it will fail to allow you to play the disc at all. When the discs have been tested on other players, they worked fine. Pixelation and frame rip are both problems. We lubricated the laser rails with reel grease, apparently with no effect. We will be shopping for another player.

Strength:

Great! While it worked...

Weakness:

Panasonic

Product worked great until after the warranty period.

Picture begins digitizing after about 1.5 hrs of play (just when you get into a movie!), then stops responding to ALL commands and controls. Eventually getting NO DISC message.

Have contacted Panasonic about this obviously inferior product...surprise, no word.

Guess we all got screwed!

(Wife works for Philips now anyway -- good discount!)

Strength:

None

Weakness:

Died 6 months out of warranty with the now well known
pixelation and inability to recognize disks.

Complete POS. Worked OK for 18 months. Poor image
compared to my APEX, which is a shock.

Panasonic refuses to acknowledge that there is a
problem. I came of age in the 80s when the Japanese
were supposed to be some kind of superhumans who
built only quality products, and Americans were
of course shiftless losers. I have had nothing but
bad luck with every Japanese product I have purchased
over the last 15 years. I will never buy anything
produced by a Japanese company again if possible.

Can you imagine a company like Dell, for example,
pulling something like this?

Strength:

Looks good with my audio gear!

Weakness:

Runs warm and Pixelation

I tried the vaseline trick and it seem to work! I did not have any problem with picture freezing up or skipping. still runs warm though. I don't know why they did not give this machine any vents.I think Panasonic/Technics needs to fire their engineers and hire some people who actually used their equipment.Kudos to that guy in San Diego who shared with us the trick to fix the problem. Maybe I'll cut a hole on this thing and give it some venting. The fan would not hurt either.

Strength:

Good value for its price

Weakness:

Its a piece of crap. QA Tested? HA

When I bought this thing about a year and a half ago, I was excited because so many people recommended it as a bargain-basement entry level dvd player. I wanted to get into A/V with something decent, so I went down to Visions on December 26th for their big after x-mas blitz. Bought it for $600 CDN ($400 USD).
I must say that I always enjoyed good performance out of it for about a year, and I only had pixellation problems with a couple discs (one of which was The Usual Suspects).
Well, let me tell you. I refuse to ever buy another Panasonic product again.
When I purchase equipment, REGARDLESS the 'quality' assumed by the price, I expect it to outlast its warranty and beyond. This dvd player is now out of warranty by 5 months, and cannot read DVD's or CD's at all.
I just took it to Japan Video, and the bill is expected to be from $80-$200. Needless to say, thank the GODS for Visa's extended warranty! It extended my warranty by 1 year. I will be getting rid of this POS as soon as its fixed, and go to something more expensive but likely more reliable, like Pioneer's DV series, Denon or Sony DVD players.
If you're a fellow Canadian, steer clear of "audiophile" mass-market stores like Visions, International Stereo, SoundSurround and anything else that carries Crapasonic and similar marketing-driven products. They're not worth your time and money.
Go to a real hi-fi audio store and ask the dealer to recommend you a model that fits your price range and reliability measures.

just my 2 cent rant.

Strength:

When working, was beautiful picture, offered DTS output.

Weakness:

Boat anchor after 1.5 years of normal use.

Add me to the list of people burned by the defective Panasonic A110. Same problem as others, pixelation, freezing. We cannot watch a movie for more than 30-40 minutes. I sent to Seattle Panasonic service center. Still waiting for their final estimate, but they have already told me I will have to pay at least $150. I already bought a new Pioneer DV-333 but will continue to press Panasonic to repair my old player. The Seattle service center told me they have no problems with the A110 and the company does not have any service bulletins. I can't believe this. I told them to take a look at this site!!!

Strength:

Good performer

Weakness:

Died about 3 months of use, but got fixed by Panasonic (heat related) The Panasonic didn't have any outlets to let heat out. This product works great but unless proper ventilation is observed it can die on you, mine wasn't properly ventilated and had a very hot underside when it finally died.

Worth the price I paid, even the Labor and parts to fix it (total less than $250)
