Strength:

Somewhat Cheap!

Weakness:

Cheaper! (Build and reliability)

Bought in Dec 99 to replace the A310 that went tits up. I had the A310 repaired and gave it to a friend who didn't have a HT system. I figured if it broke again, they'd be better able to repair it as I work overseas. Parts were free to repair, but had to pay for labor at a cost of $90.
By the way, the technician mentioned Panasonic had a problem with their pickup lasers and chip.

Just this past weekend, I had a special viewing of Gladiator (that I've seen three times already) with some friends and noticed a pause in the movie during the last viewing. This is very important because it was the first symptom that had occured with the A310. I expect after 4 to 10 more viewings, this player will also go tits up.

I am thoroughly disgusted (as with everyone else it seems) with the reliability with the Panasonic brand and will never purchase another system. I wished I would have known about these problems back then, but I gave Panasonic the benefit of the doubt that they built well designed units.

I hope there is a lawsuit against Panasonic for fraudulant merchandise. At least my Technics receiver/decoder hasn't broken down yet. (which is why I initially wanted to stay with a Panasonic system).

Buy anything but the Panasonic brand DVD players. I am finding myself preparing to purchase my 3rd DVD player. My DVD player in my computer (a backup in case of breakdowns) lasted longer than these last two players combined!

I am personally going to write to Panasonic about my problems, however it looks like it won't do me any good after looking at the other reviews.

I don't purchase extended warranties. If I think it will break within a given time, I won't buy it! I buy things that last and the Panasonic DVD players don't last.

As the saying goes, "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me."

"Its so funny, but it lasted the warranty period, if you guys would have done your research you would have purhased the extended warranties."

Do even more research, and you'll find that Sony, Toshiba, Pioneer, and even Philips makes better DVD players.

"It lasted the expected 2 years the life expectancy of a DVD at the time."

I would love to know where you came across this little bit of information. Must you be reminded that players of different brands made at the same time as the DVD-A110 do still work perfectly despite your two-year expectancy claim?

"I did and I am so Happy with my 110 and panasonic. Its a GREAT company I know you all had the chance to purchase an extended warranty and choose not to."

Panasonic makes a good television, VCR, CD player, microwave oven, rice cooker, and tape deck. But, their DVD players aren't the best, and their amplifiers SUCK (not enough ventilation slots on the enclosure and poor execution of the cooling fan means OVERHEATING FAILURES).

"So dont blame panasonic for you thinking you knew what was what. Panasonic said 1 year parts and 90 days labor. You knew it you took it now you baught budget player and you get what you pay for"

Except, for less money, you could've bought a Samsung player and expected the same level of reliability, and saved more money. Look who's the dolt now! The problem with Panasonic is that they have earned a huge reputation for quality and reliability. A player that's going to play right for longer than two years under good care is what is being expected from such a reputable brand, but they're turning out terrible DVD players that tend to break down no matter how well you take care of them! This is unbecoming of Panasonic.

"I wanted a 4 years player so I payed 39.99 or $10 a year and I had it replaced already. OH WELL!!!"

And I have a SONY DVD player that still works from day one, that tells you that Sony will kick Panasonic's rear end in the DVD department ANYDAY AND EVERYDAY! Panasonic may say that DVD was made possible by them, but the REAL fathers of DVD is Sony, Toshiba, Philips, and Time Warner. Where's Panasonic in the list? That's right, they weren't involved in the format's creation! - Reinhart

Strength:

Had it over three years and not one issue whatsoever! Very nice GUI...

Weakness:

Nada

I am and have always been a Sony man. The only peice of my system (other than speakers) that is not Sony is the Panasonic A-110. The reason is not because I knew it was a good peicw of equipment, but that when I got into DVD hardly anyone knew what the heck I was talking about. Nobody sold them, rented them or owned them. The Sony was outraeously priced at over a grand easily. Then I saw this A110 for $400 and something and I said what the hell. It looks funny with 6 other Sony components but I am EXTREMELY pleased with its performance. I have had not one single problem at all. From what I am reading, it seems to be the newer models that are sucking. I wouldn't trade mine in for anything and I wish everyone has had the same experience that I have had.

Strength:

none that i could find

Weakness:

shoddy performance

add me to the long list of people burned by panasonic's refusal to stand behind their inferior products. my dvd player is less than a year old, has been 'repaired' once, and now needs service again for the same problem. panasonic's laughingly titled 'customer care' is disavowing any responsiblity. do yourselves a favor; boycott panasonic.

Thought this machine was great for the first year and the....blammo...discs started freezing after every 30 mins. of play. I called Panasonic and found them to be useless. Add me to that class action lawsuit list. This is the last Panasonic product I will ever buy!!!

Strength:

Great Picture and Sound...easy to use menus etc.

Weakness:

None so far, but these stories have made me scared

I have owned my Panasonic A110 since August of 1998. It was manufactured in May and I have only once had a problem with it (Army of Darkness, skiped ONCE on the layer switch). I have never experienced any problems with dual layered discs, pixelation or anything of the like. My player is approx. 19 months old and I have played at least 300 discs in it! I use this thing all the time, probably 10 hours or more per week. I was gonna be loyal to Panasonic forever after the excellence of the machine but it seems I may just be a lucky case....if this machine dies anytime soon, I'm going to kill someone. I am a University student who cannot afford to buy another player right now, so if it goes, Panasonic will not be able to talk their way out of this sh!t.

Strength:

Great Picture

Weakness:

It is now broken(The dreaded 'no disc' problem)

This is the biggest piece I've ever owned. (Actually it's my girlfriends.) She has had this just out of one year, so it will not be covered by panasonic warranty. This is yet another bad tale of panasonic lack of customer service and quality. A working unit just waiting to go defective.
I just wish there was a way to fix it.

Strength:

DTS capability in a reasonably low priced unit back in 1998.

Weakness:

None.

I don't have much to say other then I've had my A110 since July of 1998 and have had no problems with it. I've read some reviews in here that talk about 4-5 second delays on dual-layer DVDs and bad sounds quality. The longest delay is "at most" a second from all the dual-layer DVDs I've used. The picture quality is excellent and the sound quality has been great through my Dolby Pro-Logic receiver. I just bought a new Dolby Digital receiver and I can't wait to hear even better audio! However, I once took my A110 to a friend's house who has a Dolby Digital receiver so I know first hand that it sound great in both Pro-Logic and Dolby Digital. I'm using my A110 on a Panasonic 32" TV (don't remember model) that I also purchased back in July of 1998. They make a good combination.

Strength:

flawless picture and sound

Weakness:

didnt last two years

This is just a note to all those who are awaiting their replacement RV65. I received mine on the 9th of march, much less than the 6 weeks promised. My 110 was received by Panasonic on the 19th of February. This is a total of 18 days. Hope this little note brings some good news to all the other people still waiting. I had already purchased another dvdp and have yet to hook this new player up, but if it will work as good as the 110 and last a few years, I will be completely satisfied. Thank You Panasonic. I,m giving a 5 star rating here, because I was very happy with the 110 when it worked, and thrilled with the way Panasonic handeled this.
