Onkyo DV S555 DVD Players

Onkyo DV S555 DVD Players

DESCRIPTION

The DV-S555 is proof you don't have to empty your pocketbook to get high-end picture and sound quality. It's also another good example of how Onkyo gives you more useful features for your money. Case in point: while all DVD players can play CDs, only a rare few can play CD-Rs and CD-RW discs. And fewer can play CDs that hold MP3 coded files. This means you can play over your home-theater system the MP3 file that you downloaded - up to 10 hours or more of music on a single disc, depending on the bit rate of the MP3 files. The DV-S555 will display MP3 filenames on your TV screen, and you can program a play list of up to 60 songs from the same disc. Other notable features include the latest 192kHz/24-bit digital-to-analog converters (for all channels) to provide cleaner, clearer sound from all your DVDs and CDs, and an Onkyo developed Direct Digital Path to deliver a noise-free digital signal that's less susceptible to flux. There's even a dedicated subwoofer pre out to allow those without a home theater system to enjoy dynamic movie sound from just their TV.

Strength:

Onkyo quality, sound and picture, remote, looks

Weakness:

No zoom feature

This is my first dvd player. I don't subscribe to jumping on new technology just cause it's there. Second and third generation players seem to have a lot of the early bugs worked out. The picture is sharp and the sound is very good. I use the s-video connection to my 27" panasonic tv.
The on screen display is well laid out and makes the player easy to set up. The remote is excellent, both in feel and function. I was dissapointed that there is no zoom feature. Watching a movie in 2.35:1 aspect ratio on a 27" screen leaves something to be desired. And don't tell me that's the way the director intended it to be! The director had to know that eventually the movie was going to wind up on a tv screen. Since I never tried a player with zoom, I don't know how much better it would be. However, I don't mind 1.85:1 ratio though, there is more picture. Overall a very good player at a decent price. Feel free to email w/ any questions.

Strength:

Superb sound, picture, build, OSD menus, remote control and MP3 capability

Weakness:

The unit does not have the following features: progressive scan output, DVD audio, port for future upgrades, on board Dolby Digital decoder or zoom modes. This product is new to the market and hard to find and because this device is so new, there may be bugs. Web site states 192 KHz/24-Bit audio DACs for all channels but the manual states 96KHz/24 Bit.

Onkyo now only makes two DVD players and I wanted a DVD that would match my existing Onkyo rack system so I opted for the 555. It is a good match for my 575X receiver. The receiver’s RC-392M remote control can operate this player when the RI inputs are connected but there is no button that will allow you to move the cursor around in the menus. This is not a big thing because the receiver has a learning remote and you can program any button that you want to do this. I am connected buy two Monster Cables, Video 3 and Lightspeed 100. The Pioneer DV-C302D is slightly behind in picture, quietness, sound and overall speed but the Onkyo 555 is not that much of a better unit. Pioneer DV-C302D users should hang on to them.

Strength:

Excellent Picture, Excellent Sound, Very quality built player with excellent everything more or less.

Weakness:

None to speak of so far

After using my Sony player for less than a year, it stopped reading select discs with no real predictability. I was disappointed to say the least and went in search of a replacement. Given my Onkyo receiver and CD player, I naturally seeked out the new Onkyo DVD players. I'd read great reviews of both the DV-S525 and 535, so I thought I'd give this one a shot. And damn am I glad I did.

Right away I noticed that colors were deeper and cleaner than my Sony was. Picture was sharper as well. Audio was better but not as dramatic of an improvement. Overall I am very happy with my purchase and am also very happy at the price I got. Before I get a stream of emails about it, no, you cannot get this price unless you sell Onkyo gear like I do, so please don't ask me how I got it that cheap. If you have any questions about the DVD or need any advice about home theater, don't hesitate to email me.
