Onkyo DV S555 DVD Players

Onkyo DV S555 DVD Players

DESCRIPTION

The DV-S555 is proof you don't have to empty your pocketbook to get high-end picture and sound quality. It's also another good example of how Onkyo gives you more useful features for your money. Case in point: while all DVD players can play CDs, only a rare few can play CD-Rs and CD-RW discs. And fewer can play CDs that hold MP3 coded files. This means you can play over your home-theater system the MP3 file that you downloaded - up to 10 hours or more of music on a single disc, depending on the bit rate of the MP3 files. The DV-S555 will display MP3 filenames on your TV screen, and you can program a play list of up to 60 songs from the same disc. Other notable features include the latest 192kHz/24-bit digital-to-analog converters (for all channels) to provide cleaner, clearer sound from all your DVDs and CDs, and an Onkyo developed Direct Digital Path to deliver a noise-free digital signal that's less susceptible to flux. There's even a dedicated subwoofer pre out to allow those without a home theater system to enjoy dynamic movie sound from just their TV.

Another positive review for this player. Excellent picture, great sound, solid build at a very good price. Easy to set up but it did freeze up on the first couple of rented discs. Mp3''s sound pretty good too.

Strength:

Great audio CD sound.

Weakness:

None.

This is my first DVD player and like some others I came to this site to check on the opinions of others. I had picked the DV-S353 but after reading the reviews on it I decided to go with the 555. Suffice it to say, since I have not had another DVD player to compare this one to, I think the picture is really nice and the sound is right along with the voices in the movies. Either way it''s a HUGE improvement from the old vcr! Music wise I''ve had many CD players including Onkyo, Nakamichi and Hitachi. The Hitachi was my first and was a great unit. The Nakamichi was my second and while the sound quality was excellent, reliability left VERY MUCH TO BE DESIRED, it was a CD Player3. After about a year I was going to have to spend what I would spend on a new CD player to get it rebuilt so out it went! My third was an Onkyo single disc player since I do not like changers. This also was a great unit. Putting this DVD player beside the older Onkyo CD player I do notice an improvement in signal quality and definition of sound. To put it mildy I like this player very much and am very pleased with the purchase I made. Onkyo has always given me quality products that have never let me down, not even once. As long as you buy quality Onkyo you can''t go wrong. And if I had thousands to spend, I''d buy the top of the line Onkyo 939!

I set a demo for a friend at this shop after hearing how bad his system was over Xmas 2001. Tried various inc. Denon but Onkyo 595 and 555 DVD plus B&W speakers were just brilliant. Exciting detailed sound and excellent picture.

I was never happy with my Pioneer 717 so a week later traded in and brought one myself. It had lip sync problems and a grainy picture compared to Onkyo 555. I use Sony FD-1 32" TV

Strength:

Picture Quality!!! Sound Quality!!! What more could your really truely want from a DVD player.

Weakness:

No Zoom, and not the greatest fast forwarding, also remote is crappy for anyone who doesn''t own a nice all-in-one remote. None of these things were issues for me though.

This player is incredible. I have been using it for almost a year now, and have no regrets to getting it. I originally got it with no idea of what it really was or how good it was. I just got it to compliment my Onkyo TX-DS787 receiver. I have 3 other DVD players in the house and have can''t stand watching DVD''s with any of them other than this. So crips, so clean :-). I also use it as my main CD player, great SQ.

Strength:

As every Onkyo, the best overall construction I've seen. Very elegant and faithfull to it's offerings.

Weakness:

Lack of arrays to play with, for those tweak lovers. Definetely very modest with effects, but levels up at performance.

Better than it's older brother the '525, The contoured faceplate matches with the new line receivers of 2001.
Video mode is amazing, so neat and clear audio through coax is clean.
CD mode is among the best, simply outstanding, this DVD sounds better than many CD Players with higher prices.
Don't hesitate to get it, it is a user-friendly unit.
Onkyo heritage.

Strength:

Picture quality, incredible sound repro, price, mp3 and cdr player extraordinaire

Weakness:

No zoom (like all the other posts state) - wish it had at least a three carousel - but I'm not complaining

My first DVD player picked in large part to the reveiws on this site - thank you all. Must say that I cannot be more surprised. Matched with a Sony Wega 32" Trinitron and quality connections including the optical cable - A MUST - the video/audio quality surpasses anything I've seen in a normal theater.

If you are looking for a home theater system - you will NOT go wrong, save $$$, and be elated with the following:

A/V Rec: Onkyo TXDS595
DVD: Onkyo DVS555
Fronts: JBL S26
Rears: JBL N24
Center: JBL NCENTER
Sub: AudioSource SW10

As I've put on other posts - get quality cables and wire. You don't have to pay an arm and a leg if you go the right route (see www.bestpriceaudiovideo.com) and the result is well worth the "few" extra bucks.

If you're looking for a quality player that will blow you away with it's video/audio for a mere $250 - this is your choice.

Strength:

Sound Quality, Video Quality, Build Quality, and a fast menu system.

Weakness:

No Zoom (i really dont have a use for that though)
They could have put progressive scan on it, but again no current use for that either. It just would have been a safekeep for the future.

Purchase this unit if you want THE BEST basic, standalone player. The audio is superb and the video quality matches their high end model 939.
Note to previous reviews:
The unit has 192kHz DACs for more accurate/warmer sound and has a 96kHz digital out.

If you have a 27" TV, don't complain about the picture size, get a larger TV. Eliminate the variable.

PS try some superbit DVDs. They're great.

I wanted to replace a Sony 360 dvd player(no signs of a problem, but before it quit on me)because of what appears to be a high failure rate. I choose Onkyo because I like how the Onkyo 575x receiver performs and the reviews for the Onkyo 535 dvd player.

After setup and playing the last dvd played on the Sony as the first on the Onkyo. I immediately noticed a better picture(sharper, cleaner, richer colors)and sound was improved too. I also like the 555 because of its size, not like all the small and slim body players.

Strength:

Exceptional sound and video performance

Weakness:

No zoom feature for those who like it. None for me.

This was a Christmas present, which I received at the same time my parents received a lower priced Toshiba. I was able to make some quick comparisons between it and the Onkyo. The most immediate difference was in size and weight. While most DVD players are getting smaller and lighter, the Onkyo still maintains size and heft. Which, I'd like to think is attributed to Onkyo's build quality. With its green display and clean lines, it has the looks of a high-end electronic thoroughbred.

Performance wise, this is the DVD player to beat under $500.00. No artifacts no lip-sync problems and a five star picture from its component video out. With Burr-Brown D/A converters on board, it made it very apparent how inferior my two year old Pioneer is in comparison. I’m a big fan of DVD live concert disks and received three new for Christmas to play with. The reproduction of the Dolby Digital audio on U2’s new “Live in Boston” disk is amazing. Pearl Jam’s “Touring Band” equally impressive and Fleetwood Mac’s “The Dance” played with top-notch detail and clarity. Music reproduction from CD was also far superior to my old Pioneer. Sound is warm, clear and detailed. In fact I was surprised by the difference the DVD player made. All my music and movies are connected to a Yamaha RXV-795a receiver and since the day after Christmas Klipsch reference series speakers (these things blow me away)

I was so impressed with Onkyo quality; I ordered a TS-DS696 receiver and plan to move the Yamaha upstairs to the bedroom. Both Onkyo products came from onecall.com. Which I think is worth mentioning due to their price match policy, excellent customer service and ultra-fast FedEx shipping. All from an authorized online dealer. I ordered my receiver Wednesday and it arrives today (Friday.) -This is shipped from Tacoma, WA to Kansas City. Other members of my family also ordered from onecall and had a great experience with them.

Overall, I’m completely satisfied with this unit and Onkyo in general. The best under $500 DVD player on the market.

Video, Audio quality

Bought the DV S353 at Circuit City (the only standalone model they had). Was relatively inexpensive (169 after rebate) and I thought because of my previous experience with Onkyo CD players, the sound would probably be better than average -- it wasn't. (I also wanted to replace my old Phillips CD player, circa 1984).

So, did some research, found this site and reviews, and looked for a local dealer that carried the S555. Not only got a great price at Bose, but got no payments, no interest financing till January 2003.

Think the DVD audio is superb on this unit. CD audio is also good, but I find it slightly bright and fatiguing compared to an older Onkyo CD carousel player I have (circa 1994). Though detail and definition seems much better. Maybe stuffing all these features into one box DVD, CD, CD-RW, MPEG reduces audio quality a little.
Then again, I've noticed good equipment usually sounds better after a burn-in period, and I've only had this thing for 2 days -- it may get better.

Anyway, think it's a great DVD player.
