WOW!! I WAITED for this unit..and was glad I did. I wanted a DVD for some time. But was not impressed by the many on the market. Panasonic was the only one, but did not play CD music to my liking. The NAK DVD10 is worth every penny!!! It plays DVD and CD with stunning audio and the picture is VERY VERY precise, thanks to a DUAL LASER pickup.. This is a nice mix with my NAK AV-7 receiver. NAK kept the same front grill etc.. as the AV-10 and AV-7. AMAZING you cant go wrong. Once you go NAK YA CANT GO BACK!!!

Strength:

Company's past reputation in build quality and sound!

Weakness:

Reliability is the main problem of this unit!

I own so many "vintage" Nakamichi products ie Cr7A, RX 505, Cr3A, MB1, MTD1, PA 302s and many more products of this company. I just can not believe what has happened! This unit was just awful in performing ie would not open up, shut down, and play! I was also trying to "upgrade" my BMW car with a disc changer made by Nakamichi. Wow tremendous problem there! There seems to be a problem with a company that has so many loyal people quite disgusted. First, trying to located a dealer is like a massive research project. For the price you pay for this machine...gosh I am not askin for red carpet treatment, but please at least have a dealer! As I lay me down to sleep..I pray Nakamichi does something!

Weakness:

can't read cdrs, freezes and pixelates at times

an excellent buy..forces you to relisten to all your CDs
using Monster optical toslink cable
might have to return for DVD-10s which supports cdr discs & zoom & supposedly doesn't lock up
but the newer model is $200 less. S/N Ratio: DVD-10 at 105db vs DVD-10s at 100db

Strength:

Great Picture quality; sleek and beautiful; great warranty.

Weakness:

Slow startup, some artifacts especially on high compression scenes on DVDs; noisy cooling fan.

Problems with playing some discs. The dealer replaced it. Similar problem with Matrix, Dracula etc.The dealer then chipped it and now it won't play other discs, which it played before.
This AKAI sourced machine had great potential had it not been for the glitches.

Strength:

Great build, Video output is excellent, Sound is excellent, Warranty excellent, MADE IN JAPAN.

Well, after less than a week, my Nakamichi DVD10 was dead. The disc tray would not open and it would just power off. Called Nakamichi as well as the local stereo shop where I purchased it from, it was replaced - no questions. So, I am going to give Nakamichi as well as the DVD10 another review since....a) Nakamichi stands behind their products.....b) DVD10 is an excellent piece of equipment.....c) the quality it puts outs is remarkable.....d) one of my best investments for stereo equipment. The Nak DVD10 is connected via AudioQuest Turqouise cables for audio and Tributaries cables for the video. The receiver is my Nak AV 7 with Wharfedale front, center, and rear speakers. Solid rating for a solid piece of equipment.

Strength:

Clean, Simple Styling from Nakmichi which I like, Great Overall Picture and Sound for Movies

Weakness:

None found so far

Overall, I would say this product functions very well, plays all discs I have thrown at it. It has not skipped or failed to play any discs including my CD-Rs. The picture quality is great, on par with other DVD players. It's features are more than adequate for me. It plays audio better than the models I have listed above, except for the Denon DVD 5000. I prefer a much higher quality CD player for two-channel stereo, and do not expect a DVD player to match the quality in audio of the higher quality independent single disc CD player which I own. This DVD player functions very well in my bedroom system which includes the Nakamichi AV-10, the DVD-10s, and Sonus Faber Concertos for fronts, and Sonu Faber Piccolo Center. I could not ask for a sweeter sounding set-up for a smallish bedroom.

I have not found any noticeable defects in picture quality. Easy to operate and set-up. No noticeable noise when playing a disc. A quiet, and smooth operator.

I compared the audio on this above set-up to my more robust living room set-up: Parasound AVC-3500, Bryston 4B-ST X 3, Nordost SuperFlatline Gold speaker cable, Harmonic Technology Pro Silway MKII interconnects, and PSP Stratus Gold i speakers. Certainly, like apples to oranges. But, my bedroom system more than holds up it's own, with respect to overall dynamics, accuracy of sound, listenability, treble, and mids. Only, the bass is notcieably less but perfect for the room size.

Bottom line - very satisifed, and will keep for a long time. Nakamichi has made a winning product as usual. Perfect for my set-up. I recommend you give this one a listen and see for yourself.

Strength:

Beautiful picture on my 31" SONY Trinitron.

Weakness:

CD audio quality low for a relatively expensive DVD player.

I'm surprised how many people have had defective players. I've always found Nak to make solid reliable products. Never had any problems with their tape decks or CD players. Which is not to say I didn't have delivery problems this time around.

I purchased mine just as Nak was updating the DVD-10 to the DVD-10S. I waited 3 months for the DVD-10, I complained and they shipped me the DVD-10S in place of the 10. Good. I purchased it purely on reviews in magazines and enthusiast postings and past experience with Nak products and I was not let down -- it's solid and simple -- I like simple. Initial DVD read time is slower than some Sonys I've tried at friends' places, but the picture seems nicer on the 10S -- maybe someone can back this with some real measurements. Strange though that it doesn't seem to play CDs nearly as well as my Nak OMS-1 -- a much cheaper component. By 'play' I mean 'sound.' The OMS-1 has a richer sound without losing any detail. The DVD-10S sounds more distant but increasing the volume didn't make it sound any richer. Don't bother using the headphone jack - it's mediocre.

My Naks are old and they've never let me down (replaced a disc tray belt last year on the OMS-1 but it was time). I expect no less from this DVD player. It's a good thing these things are built to last, because their product distribution logistics are crap. I'd hate to have to return a Nak product to the factory -- I may never see it again.

Great as primary DVD player, but a bit pricy.

Strength:

WHEN working good picture.sound good, bur surrounds could me more defined.

Weakness:

cheap. always having problems

This product worked okay for about the first 6 months or so. Then the picture started breaking up. Then in about another month the picture started breaking up in pieces,a bunch of square frames, pixels i guess.then the unit started to freeze and kicked back to the start of the movie. Well, that was enough of that. I took it back and i have been waiting over 7 weeks for a replacement, and still don't know when i will get one. Now my dealer just got me a loaner, B-stock. after watching 5 movies, the unit has started to freeze on 2 different movies. I have had it with this model. this is thier 1st. generation player. and they due have alot of bugs to work out of this player!Wait for a different model to come out! I have had the panasonic dvdrv-30 and the sony 360. panasonic is an excellent machine. i am getting the toshiba 1200 next. then i will decide which one i liked the best. It will be between the toshiba and the panasonic. I am not spending over $700.00 for a dvd player. the newer models coming out put out a sharp picture with great sound. I do not recommend the nakamichi dvd10 or 10s. i do recomend the panasonic dvd rv-30 or R-30. Still waiting for my NAK! I'll give it 3 stars when working maybe 4. BUT for value for what you pay. 1 STAR.
