Strength:

Component output, high-performance specs

Weakness:

Reliability!!!!

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I have recently experienced problems playing DVDs in this unit. It worked great for about a year and a half, and now likes to reject DVDs when first inserted. Not every time; certain DVDs more than others.
A few days ago, while attempting to play a DVD, the player decided to inadvertantly switch into "PCM" mode; and almost fried my speakers before I got it turned off.
Being a video engineer who has used numerous JVC professional products, and having one of the original JVC Bitstream CD players (almost 10 years old now) that still works flawlessly, I thought I was making a good decision when I chose this player. Other people I talked to were buying the Sony's and Toshiba's, but I felt certain that the JVC would be a "cut above".
Well, JVC, you certainly proved me wrong. And you can rest assured that I will not purchase or recommend any more of your products. This level of product performance is inexcusable from a company that has built a reputation for quality products over the years. This is exactly the kind of quality that I usually warn friends and coworkers about when they are considering "house" brands or flea market "specials".

Strength:

Good Picture and Sound when it works

Weakness:

It dies after several months

Well, after owning a very good JVC TV I thought it would be good to purchase a JVC DVD player.....HUGE MISTAKE. The player worked great, and even lasted eleven months until I started getting the same problems described in these other reveiws. At first the problems wouldn't start until 90 minutes into the movie, then it went down to 60 minutes, now it's down to 30 minutes. The picture get's distorted, skips, breaks up, sound drops off. I tried resetting the unit but it had no effect. I quess I should consider myself lucky that it lasted this long after reading everyone else's reveiws. After reading what everyone else went through when trying to have it repaired as well as the cost involved, I've decided to just replace the player. Currently I'm looking at the Sony S360 as a replacement. I think everyone should complain on UGetHeard.com and perhaps William from his review on 8/2/00 will follow through with a class action suit. JVC must be held accountable for their poor quality products. BOTTOM LINE IS DO NOT BUY JVC DVD PLAYERS!!!

None So Far

I have had this unit for over a year and haven't had any major problems. Ihave over 50 dvds and watch about 4 movies a week and have had only one disk that would not read the widescreen version of the movie. It worked fine on the full screen so I figured it was the disk. Other than that I have not yet experienced any other problems.

Well, I had the optical block problem fixed in June (see below). Now the same problems are recurring. It won't play any dvd's. If it does manage to play one disc without rejecting it, all I see is pixellation. And all of my discs are scratch free. I've had it with JVC products.

Strength:

Nice picture, good DD sound.

Weakness:

Where to start? DTS dropout on half the dics (including Galaxy Quest). Inability to play all DVD's with default to PCM stereo (Mariah Carey #1's, Eagles, etc. Any Sony Music DVD). Rather annoying remote.

This is my final post for this JVC unit.

1. Their customer service stinks. Write emails you either never get a response, or they claim noting is wrong. You can't get anyone on the phone. Compare this to Kenwood whom I called, spoke with someone immediately and they satid on the phone with me 30 minutes trying to help AND THEN called back 3 days later to make sure everything was still ok. That is customer service and why I've been a kenwood customer on most everything for the last 10 years ('cept DVD players :)

2. DTS is non existent on most discs. Saving Private Ryan and Galaxy quest dropout every few seconds. Amazingly, T2 the Ultimate edition works!

3. Won't play many discs, including Mariah #1's, Eagles, or any other Sony Music DVD.

4. On REALLY bright quick flashes (such as explosions, or quick changes) the picture drops and I get "unusable signal" from my TV.

I (yesterday) finally just got VERY tired of all of this, and replaced the JVC with a Sony 660. I've been happy with it and will write a review once I have a few weeks with it. For now, thge JVC is sitting in a box in my closet. I'll probably hook up to my 25 inch TV in the bedroom through a coax conversion. The JVC stinks.

Strength:

first 1 1/2 year ok

Weakness:

everything don't want to play no more.

I have been a JVC customer for 12 years now and I must say this was there first product that I became dissapointed with, after 1 1/2 year of operation it decided to stop playing dvd's (eeprom reset or not). I called customer support and emailed them threating them with no further purchase on any of there products before I got any responce ( delayed), with no aknowledgemnt that the player was defective.
So I bought the pioneer dv-333 and been happy since.
If anybody has ifo about the class action please email me.
Thanks and stay away from this player.

So Far, So Good.....

Weakness:

None! (Yet.)

I'm afraid. I'm very afraid.
I received this player as a gift at the end of November 2000. Don't know exactly what year it was made. So far, I have had no problems after playing approx. 10 movies, but none of them being the "problem" discs described below. I have thankfully filled out and sent in the warranty information.
From what I've read here, I'm very dubious as to the future of this machine. As I said, this was a gift. I told another relative that I had received a DVD player already, and he said that he had just bought a Hitachi DVD player for me as a gift also, and that he is now taking it back since I had already received one. I'm now sorry that I told him, because it sounds like I'll need a backup in a couple of months.
Well, now the good news. Absolutely not one problem. I don't use DTS because my receiver (Sony STR-AV1020) is 10 years old or so, and does not support DTS.
Picture quality is perfect on my 52" Mitsubishi TV, and the Dolby Digital (which is supported by my dinosaur receiver) sound through my measly 2 speakers is also superb.

I'm scared.

My rating below is on a "So far, so good" system.

Strength:

It was a good deal. No problems (so far).

Weakness:

None, so far.

This is my first DVD player. I am glad to say that I've been using this product for a while and have not experience any of the problems that have been posted here by other consumers. Maybe the machine isn't old enough yet. I watch a fair amount of movies; so, it has seen an average amount of use.

I have played audio CD's, video CD's, and DVD's in this unit wihout any problems. I have had a skipping problem with a rental DVD. In the machines defense, the DVD did appear well used/abused.

The audio in Dolby Digital has been good. I haven't watched any DTS movies (not many available) yet, but I did play a portion of U571 in DTS without any DTS decoding problems.

So far, so good and no complaints from me on this machine. I hope that I don't experience any of the problems posted here. If I do, I will update my review.

Great cd player

Weakness:

Picture freezes after 20 minutes viewing, no customer support from jvc

Don't buy this player, it's junk. Mine played fine for approximately 8 months, then I started having problems with the picture freezing & the unit locking up. The 1st few times it took 60 minutes or so for this to happen, now it has progressed to 5 minutes after I insert a dvd. I've e-mailed jvc on numerous occasions & they've responded only once. I bought my son a cheap G.E player from Walmart last xmas that has outlasted & outplayed this overpriced unit. I also would like to be included in the class action suit & would appreciate any info on how to join. This jvc unit is a good cd player at best.
