Strength:

Looks nice

Weakness:

Doesn't work

Damn. I thought I was lucky because mine passed the 6 month mark with only the DTS dropout problem.

a few days later, just stopped playing discs. The EPROM reset helps sometimes, but I haven't been able to get the player through even one movie without locking up.

Now I get to try JVC customer service to see if they'll do anything. If anyone's dealt with their canada customer service, please email me your experiences.

Strength:

Has nice lights on the front. Sounds OK

Weakness:

Remote, picture quality. Won't read CD-R

I bought this player blindly. I needed a DVD player, was working for Best Buy at the time and got it "open box" for $150. Seemed cheap at the time, but was I wrong.

The remote sucks both in the way it functions and also in "build quality". The batteries don't fit snuggly. The "joystick" I would recommend using as a thumb rest on your way over to the player to manually operate the unit.

Picture quality was pretty good with "Lost in Space" but I have to say about 90% of the movies I have watched have had very bad pixelation sometimes on a par with Internet Steaming Video!

It doesn't read CD-R, but does read CD-RW which I found out a bit too late.

I am HAPPY to read of this products abilty to stop functioning a day after the warranty with JVC expires as I have a FOUR year service with Best Buy. I can't wait for it to croak so I can get a new one. I'll give it a pauper's funeral I think.

Don't buy at ANY price. Junk, junk, junk.

Strength:

Looks nice. Plays some titles nicely.

Weakness:

Will not play any Matrix DVDs.

The first Matrix DVD bought in December 1999 never played. Insert Disk->"Reading Disk"->Eject Disk; happens EVER time! No mention in the (inadequate) Troubleshooting section about this problem.
2nd & 3rd Matrix DVDs bought last week, skipped, pixelated, froze, especially in the middle part (the Kung Fu fight scene!). Using Special Features would lock up unit totally so that your ONLY option is to unplug it to reset and get the DVD out.

Am returning unit immediately.

Strength:

Good Picture when I can get it to work.

Weakness:

PLAYS on average of 3 OUT OF 10 MOVIES. Its been in local and company repair shops longer than I have had it in my posesion. Extremely unrelaible, a $500+ Paper Weight.

This unit worked fine for the first month I had it than started to lock-up. On the third month it stop playing serting movies. Local repair facility could not get needed repair part from JVC. Sent unit to JVC for repair, got same unit back with invoice saying repaired. I tried it, and still had same poroblems. This is my first and last time I purchase a JVC product.

Strength:

Plays some DVD's

Weakness:

Won't play many DVD's

It worked for a bit, constantly glitching, then stopped. You have to press the enter button many times to get it to work. Picture quality is normal until you zoom, then it gets very grainy. I took it right back and got a Toshiba SD-3109 for the same price... infinitely better!

Strength:

Works on Some DVD's

Weakness:

Many "incompatible" DVD's, Crappy Customer Service

What a piece of s***. Finally got fed up when it refused to play 3 consecutive DVD's I had purchased, and spent an hour on hold awaiting technical support. Have since bought a Toshiba 1200 for < $200, and it plays all of the DVD's that my JVC choked on. In short, a less than adequate player with abysmal customer service. DO NOT BUY THIS MACHINE!

Strength:

Has played every DVD with no problems

Weakness:

The remote

After reading all of the reviews below just thought i would put in a good word for my JVC. I have had no problems what so ever with it(knock on wood). I have 60+ DVDs and rent often from the local video store, Of all of these I have had no types for the errors I have been reading.

The only thing that I would change is the remote.

Some times jog button isn't reponsive.

Overall I liked the unit UNTIL IT STOPPED Playing DVD's after 6months. Granted it has a 3 month service/ 12 month service warranty (If i could find my !#$@!$# reciept). But i still am disappointed in its quality.

Strength:

Can really say anymore because I'm so mad

Weakness:

Doesn't hold up.

I've had it for over a year. When I first got it, it had alot of great features and it looked cool. (I know nobody likes to admit it's important, but it is.) Back then there wasn't much in the way of DTS titles not to mention someplace that rented them. Finally got a hold of Apollo 13 and DTS didn't work.(about 4 months into purchase) Turns out it was a bug in the firmware that they didn't admit to. I made a bunch of phone calls and got alot of run around. I took it to the service center myself in New Jersey and got alot of lip service about how I would have to pay for labor. I told them why would I have to pay for something that was never working from the start. They said it must of worked at some point for me to have it for 4 months. If I had nothing to test it with how would I know. Well they fixed it for free and shipped it to my house. And that lasted for about another 5 months. Then it started skipping on almost ever movie I put in. Kept cleaning discs and and even tried lens cleaners. It just got worse until movies were not even watchable. Found out the optic would have to be replaced and would cost about $200.00 (What the? it was barely a year old.) I was also informed that sometimes that didn't even fix it. Not acceptable in my book. So I decided to cut my losses and buy a new one. (Needless to say it wasn't another JVC) I used it for playing just CD's and now after it gets warm it starts making alot of nosie as it bounces the disc back and forth until it finally just opens the drawer and spits the disc out. What a waste a space. I agree that a class action suit is a must and something should be done to correct this. I feel I have been robbed.

Strength:

Features, aesthetics, component video outputs

Weakness:

Failure to play parts of certain movies, extremely horrible build quality, remote was kind of flaky, power cord not detachable.

I am really frustrated with the player. Even though it is technically still under warranty, I just decided to replace it (rather than mess with the hassle of trying to have it fixed). I am puzzled with JVC's difficulties regarding this particular DVD - I have a JVC TV and CD player and they work flawlessly. This unit is the last JVC product that I will buy.

The unit failed to play part or all of some discs (I had trouble with "Full Metal Jacket" and "Arlington Road"). For "Full Metal Jacket," the issue was serious skipping and audio/video syncronization problems after the layer transition, while I could not access some special features on "Arlingon Road." Also, the unit tends to get very hot when used for more than an hour (odd, considering most movies run two...).

Anyway, I really liked this player when I bought it - the unit had nice set of features for a good price. I do not like it now. I think it is unacceptable to pay over $300 for a unit that is only 90% functional. I am sure that the person I am planning to give it to will love it, even at 90% - too bad I did not.

Finally, the remote is not that great. It is laid out fairly well and the joystick in the middle is a good idee, though it does not work (new batteries will help).
