Strength:

It does have a well laid out face and good remote. The picture is quite nice too.

Weakness:

BUT, if it don't have sound, no movie experience is to be found. Oh, did I mention that this player is a LEMON??!!!

Augh, the XV501... The black sheep of JVC DVD players!! Unfortunately, I found this site AFTER it was too late and I had sealed my bid... After painfully living with a cheap Walmart quality all in one DVD system, I knew it was time to buy a nice JVC unit. I have been buying JVc for a long time and figured I could not go wrong. Sh@t! I went wrong. After hooking this lemon up for the first time, I fired up Office Space and prepaired to sacrafice the next few hours... But I spent those two hours and some checking speaker wires, RCA outs and the like. NO SOUND I emailed the seller and asked him if he had a problem with the analog outs and he stated that he streamed audio via the optical outs. At the time my Aiwa reciever did not accept optical inputs. So, knowing this I spent some cruical rent money and bought the JVC RX8030 Dolby D reciever. Anxiously I hooked the optical outs to the reciever and yet again grabbed Office Space. STILL NO SOUND I will wrap up this synapsis with this: This DVD player is a LEMON. Judging on how many bad reviews this site shows for this model, it is safe to pass this assumption. Recently I have cured the Movie- Itis buy purchacing a JVC XV F80 7 disc changer and have not had one problem since. Now don't get me wrong. I am a big fan of JVC and have been for some 12 years, but this model should be used as an example of how NOT to design and manufacture a DVD player! All is not lost however. I now have the 'tainted' player hooked up to my capture card of my video editing PC and use it for just that. All this prick is good for!! 0 out of 5

Strength:

FEature set not available on most units in this price range

Weakness:

No MP3, CD-R or home burnt DVD capabilities or progressive scan. Wacky remote brings overall to 4 star.

No problems at all! This Christmas will be 3 years of continuous use, up to 6 DVD playings a month or more. No overheating problems, no audio cutout, no pixelation, none of the problems reported by others. Maybe I shoulda played the lotto the same day I purchased this, as I seemed to have a lucky touch. I have enjoyed JVC products for over 2 decades and they have a t least one satisfied customer with this unit. I'm sorry for the other folks, but us lucky ones with no problems got a great deal for the price.

Strength:

componet hook up, dolby digital, etc.

Weakness:

reverse scene selection button at times does not work without pushing it twice or more.

Bought this at a close-out sale. I have always looked at JVC as a good product. I was happy to get it. So far no real problems. I have had it for 2yrs. If a dvd had problems I would use warm water and dish soap to clean the disk. Seems to do the trick. I will have to give this a decent rating despite the other reviews. It has worked for me. But I will not buy JVC again because of the problems and response from JVC. Getting a good dvd player may be the luck of the draw.

Strength:

Good price at the time of purchase. Component outputs / optical.

Weakness:

On rare occasions, this thing would turn off for no apprent reason while in the middle of a movie. Oh, and it's not progressive scan...

There's really not alot to say about DVD players. I have been relatively happy with this one. i.e., it generaly plays movies for me. My decoders are on my amp (which I recommend for everyone) so I didn't about it not having them built it.

I wrote a review previously discussing what a piece of crap this player was. I was just wondering if anyone has heard anymore about the lawsuit... the hearing was supposed to be last March.

Strength:

it matches most components with a black cabinet

Weakness:

the cabinet is not strong enough to support a truck if missplaced in traffic

this was a real dooper. gold plated terminals are real lure to me as all high end stuff has them. the unit worked well, goog picture and easy user interface. then it happened. 55 minutes of watching and pixelmania. this came within weeks of use. i blamed the discs. Took several back. bought a sony by accident and found it played everything just fine. shipped jvc to jvc chicago. they want $65.00 to return it to me without repair. $298.00 to fix it. i am a lawyer and will spend the court costs to sue jvc right here in good old ohio for defective design and breach of warranty. it will cost them more than a refund to defend my suit. i am liviv with their callousness about this. i am dun, that is dun, d-u-n with jvc. i would not buy their stuff if it came with a 5 ***** rating from the staff at sony.

Strength:

Nice picture, sound, remote.

Weakness:

Doesn't last long. Takes a bit of time ot load movie compared otmore current players.

After having purchased this unit in the beginning of 2000 with a protection plan from Best Buy, I have had to return this unit one, two, three times to Best Buy for replacements and adjustments to get the player to work. When it works, it is fantastic. But it never seemed to last more than eight months at a time. The final time I took it to Best Buy and they let me exchange it for another unit. I grabbed the JVC XV-s500BK. Hopefully JVC has improved upon their units because I do like how they run...when they run.
