Weakness:

Frequent freezes, and locks up. many repair bills, bad customer service

I made the mistake of buying this JVC DVD player. After a short time (although long enough to be out of full warranty) I had to bring it to be repaired. They replaced the optical pickup. I am now bringing it in again to a JVC authorized repair center and they are giving me a $272 estimate to repair it and again replace the optical pick up. Of course the warranty on the repair has expired. JVC will not give me any oppinion on whether this repair is worth paying for and is of no assitance in helping with the settlement class action. They have horrable service and I have bought my last JVC product. I have bought many other products from JVC in the past, but if the company won''t stand behind the product they are of no value.

Strength:

Plays music CD''s

Weakness:

Will only now play music CD''s.

WAS a nice dvd player for 2 years, NOW is almost useless. After having problems with freezing & "No Disc" like others on this site, I sent a an E-mail to JVC''s customer service web site. They didn''t even acknowledge my letter. Next I called by phone, JVC customer service will not even talk to owners about this machine, they will only refer us to the DVD settlement phne number. I guess I expected more "customer service" since I own 6 other JVC products on my A/V rack, I was wrong....

Strength:

Nice features for the price, if only it worked at all.

Weakness:

Lack of Any Reliability

Well, it's been awhile since my first post on this site on August 2, 2000 calling for a class action suit, and the settlement is finally on its way. Information on the settlement is available online both at the attorneys' site at http://lawssb.com/, or at the www.dvdsettlement.com site.

Some general information from the attorney's site is appended below. http://lawssb.com/settlements/pan_jvc_dvd.html

Panasonic and JVC DVD Player Litigation

Model Numbers: XV-501BK, XV-511BK, or XV-D701BK (the "DVD Players at Issue").

Under the Settlement Agreement, Mats. Electric Corporation of America ("Mats.") and JVC Americas Corp. ("JVC", and, collectively with Mats., the "Defendants"), will arrange to provide eligible Settlement Class Complainants who timely submit and properly complete Claim Forms with either: (i) cash reimbursement of repair costs up to $100.00 per DVD Player at Issue; (ii) a $50 Rebate Certificate for persons who experienced performance problems with their DVD Players at Issue and replaced their DVD Units with another manufacturer's DVD player; or (iii) extended warranty coverage that provides for the repair or, at Defendants' option, replacement of the Settlement Class Complainants' DVD Player at Issue.

To participate in the settlement, you must complete a Claim Form and return it with supporting documentation no later than May 6, 2002 to the Claims Administrator, Gilardi & Co. LLC, P.O. Box 8060, San Rafael, CA 94912-8060 The Claim Form and a detailed notice describing the settlement can be obtained by calling 1-800-805-2531. If you have any questions concerning the settlement, you can call the Claims Administrator at 1-800-805-2531 or visit the website located at www.dvdsettlement.com.

Great DVD player. I would recommend it to anyone that wants a quality DVD! It is very easy to use and I enjoy this product very much. It always seems that I am always happy with the JVC brand of product. Get the DVD Player, You won't be sorry!

Strength:

Nice menuing system, great picture and sound when it works

Weakness:

Unit often freezes especially when accessing bonus features on a DVD. Would not play "Saving Private Ryan" at all (tried multiple disks). "Enter" key on remote is flaky.

A huge disappointment. Previous experience with JVC equipment (VCRs, CD player, portable stereo) was fine, but I had trouble from the beginning with this thing. Randomly freezes so bad that I have to unplug the unit to recover (does not respond to any buttons including Power). Won't play "Saving Private Ryan" at all (tried multiple copies of that disk). Tried the EPROM reset remedy but that did not work. Seemed to get worse as time went on - this is unfortunate because had it been worse in the beginning I would have had it serviced sooner. Now I'm having trouble with waranty support. I had it 8 months. It's been at the service center for 6 weeks and now they want me to pay $100 for labor to fix it (parts are still covered). I paid $450 for this player less than a year ago and it appears that my best option is to cut my losses and buy another (non-JVC) unit.
I tried reasoning with JVC customer support but they were very inflexible. I don't normally spring the extra bucks for an extended warranty, but for my next DVD player I will certainly do that. And it is unlikely that I'll buy any JVC products again. I will certainly read all reviews on this site before I make another purchase!

Strength:

Unfortunately it still turns on.

Weakness:

Too numerous to list, customer support is NON-exsisent at JVC

My expeirence's are the same as everyone else's, movies lock-up,pixelate,freeze. I have done the "EEPROM" reset and occaisonly I get to watch a movie the whole way through without it freezing or turning to pixels and skipping like an abused LP record. This is without a doubt an inferior prouduct released by JVC with the attitude that "TUFF S___,YOU BOUGHT IT AND YOU'RE STUCK WITH IT !..DO NOT PURCHASE AT ANY PRICE !

Everything. Performance, quality, style.

Weakness:

Joystick on remote a little cheap, enter doesnt always work.

This jvc is the best player for the 300 dollar round up. I have had no problems at all and have watched many movies, concerts and music. People who say it locks and freezes must have got bad ones- never happens to me.

Retired my PIECE OF Sh*t JVC player yesterday
11 months old and completely useless, wont play 75% of my discs.Tired of reseting the eeprom only to have it freeze up halfway through a film.Picked up a Pioneer dv333 at Best Buy for 189.00 using four gift cards I got for my birthday 109.00+tx.And sent most of the night trying every disc that I had problems with on my xv501bk.Every disc worked perfectly and the load time is very fast.I'm very impressed with the Pioneer.

doesn't live much past the warranty

Wow, I wish I had read this a year and a half ago. Much like the rest of the folks here I loved this thing until it broke way too early, about a year and a half. And, much like everyone else, JVC told me I was on my own. So now I have to go buy another DVD machine to play the library of discs I have acquired. Thanks, JVC, I'll remember this...
