I REALLY LIKED THE IDEA OF A ONE UNIT PACKAGE FOR CD/DVD/TAPES ALL THE CABLE SPACE SAVED IS GREAT. BUT... THE DVD PLAYER SKIPS AND PAUSES QUITE A BIT. I RETURNED UNIT AND SECOND ONE HAD SAME PROB. NO BODY AROUND HERE KNEW OF SENSORY SIENCE SO NO REPAIRS WERE MADE. I MAY JUST HAVE GOTTEN A BAD BATCH SO I TOOK IT BACK. LOOKING FORWARD TO FINDING LATER MODELS WITH THIS PROB. SOLVED. DVR-4000 IS OUT NOW TOO.(SAME BUT A LITTLE STRIPPED DOWN) I RECOMMEND THE IDEA BUT BE CARFUL WHEN YOU BUY.

Strength:

It looks nice. It's a great idea. Other than that it has not one redeeming feature.

Weakness:

Playing DVDs.

I sure wish I had read these reviews before purchasing this product 5 days ago. On original hook up, the picture was clear, then after 6 minutes, the picture turned black and white, and had herringbone type waves. If you let it continue to play, the picture froze.

Turning unit off/on yields similar results (at the 6 minute mark). Turning it off and taking out the plug, yields 6 more minutes of pure clear picture and then it freezes, or turns black and white again.

This isn't the only problem. When pushing the Open/Close button, nothing happens unless you turn the unit off, then the holder will slam shut or open depending on its mood with some 60 second delay time.

Occasionally if all planets are in alignment, it will and has played for 50 minutes - until of course, it freezes. I have tested it on every DVD in my personal library (all of which play perfectly well on my other DVD).

It doesn't appear to understand the cable box, doesn't like the amplifier, and we've even plugged it directly into the TV - to no avail, getting black and white, blotchy reception. If we didn't know better we'd think that it was something to do with the security features for copying. If you have ever tried to copy a commercial video or DVD (just to see if it works)and seen the black/white, bars stripes/flashing and colour blotches, you'll know what we are talking about.

Took 3 hours to get through a 90 minute movie on Christmas Day - ended up just being a challenge to watch more than 6 minutes at a time.

We're going to TRY today to exchange it. The most frustrating piece of equipment I've ever owned.

Strength:

Compact design; all-in-one unit

Weakness:

DVD player skips/freezes on even new movies

As I posted in an earlier review I was having problems with this unit.
I did manage to find a repair location (Radio Shack) and dropped it off on 10/20/01.
According to RS's records they ordered a replacement part on 10/27/01 and so far have received nothing.
Meanwhile my unit is becoming increasingly obsolete and other companies (Samsung, Panasonic) have released similar (and definitely cheaper) models using the same concept.
My only "real" suggestion is if you're buying this unit to play the heck out of it within the first month so you can return it to the store and get your money back if it doesn't work right.
Personally I think GoVideo should offer a replacement unit instead of holding my system hostage :(

Strength:

Dual deck convenience

Weakness:

Piece of junk don't buy

The DVD never worked right. It skips or freezes. You can't get a live body for tech support and Go Video doesn't respond to emails. We have to pay $130.00 labor to repair and Go Video parts are on back order with no relief date. A big ripoff not worth the trouble.

Strength:

I have found that this unit has no redeaming qualities!!!!

Weakness:

Service would have to improve before I could say it was POOR

Spend your money on something else because this unit is not worth the shelf space it saves!! It was a problem from day one, but I tried returning the disks thinking that the disk was a problem! Then tried a lense cleaner thinking the lense got a little dusty. Then they said take it to Radio Shack and have it repaired (obviously a manufacturers defect)! They have had it over a month now!!!

Space saving design.

Weakness:

DVD player skips/freezes or get "no disk error"; VCR doesn't "count down" when rewinding on daily soap recordings.

I had been interested in getting a DVD player but didn't want an "extra" machine in my entertainment unit; I was very excited when I saw that Go Video had come out with this combo unit. I just registered my player now because I realized after a bit of testing (I bought a cheap DVD player last night and was able to watch a complete DVD which was less than a week old and was freezing on the DVR-5000)the DVD player has NEVER worked properly, especially after almost a year of frustration when renting DVD's only to have them skip or halt or worse, get a "unable to read disk" error.
Unfortunately I didn't have anything to compare to since this was my first DVD player and had been thinking it was due to mishandling of DVD's in the rental market; otherwise I would have addressed the problem sooner. Anyway I want to believe that Sensory Science stands behind their products and will fix the faulty DVD player part of my DVR-5000. However; from what I read in the other reviews and not seeing any service centers in my area I'm beginning to think this won't happen and I'll just have an extremely expensive VCR instead and the expense of buying another DVD player, bleh!

space saver, dvd vcr combo is a great idea

Weakness:

stopped playing cd's, skips a lot during movies

right out of the box skipped during dvd movies and cd's, thought it was because they were rented but that wasn't the case the same dvd worked fine on a friend's unit, then wouldn't play cd's at all, returned unit, had to pay shipping, got a replacement worked fine for a little while then stopped playing cd's again and movies still skip, warranty over, not worth fixing if I can buy a new unit for almost the same price as a repair. I do not recommend until the dvd problem is resolved because it was a great idea.

VCR section

Weakness:

DVD section

I've had mine 9 months to date. About 6 months into using the unit, light use - couple DVD's on the weekends, I start getting the "NO DISC", "THE DISC CANNOT BE PLAYED, PLEASE CHECK THE DISC" error. After a little research I found that this only seems to happen on dual layer DVD's (the majority of movies). I called Go Video/Sensory Science and was told to take it for service, 90 day warranty for parts and labor expired so only parts are covered. Labor = $100. Told Go Video customer service that I didn't like having to invest that much more into a $376 product that was only 9 months old, they apologized but basically told me that was my only option. I wish I could return it. I would not buy another product from this company. Too bad because I liked buying American and thought the concept was great.

They have a lower cost model, the DVR4000, and they are offering 'factory reconditioned' units for sale on their website. I have only 1 recommendation. Buyer beware!

Strength:

Weakness:

DVD never tracked properly. Couldn't play one all the way through without black screens and pixelating. Cable Video pass through washed out signal and caused snow. VCR failed to record programed times 1 out of 3 times.

Bought direct from Sensory Science for $250 plus shipping. Had to send unit back immediately for repair. Sensory Science refused to pay shipping back for a defective product ($17). When unit was returned, had same failure in DVD unit. Returned for refund, but out $35 in shipping for a crappy product. Cannot recommend product or company. :-(

Details:
Difficult setup. Manual was detailed, but vague on overall functions. Details on setting up S-video were scattered in 5 different places with the essential setup hidden in an appendix and it took a call to the company to find it. Explanations were clear but very limited. No problem or trouble-shooting examples.

In testing the first time, tried 8 different commercial DVDs and it couldn't play through any of them without stuttering or losing scan. 2 DVDs were brand new and 6 were rented. Returned for repair and they replaced the Pick-up and Optics, adjusted the tape path. When received back from factory, had all the same problems. Tried same DVDs on cheap no-name unit from Fry's and they all played fine. Note: Tried cleaning the rental DVDs and polishing them to see if that made a difference -- it didn't.

Signal passthough from the cable was washed out and had snow.

The VCR side recording timer failed on 1 out of 3 times. Could get it to record properly at any time.

It did play MP3 music CDs fine. Not what you would buy it for, however.

DVD/VCR in one unit

Weakness:

Piece of junk!! DVD skips & freezes and VCR has no tracking for freeze-frame.

Seemed like a good idea and a fair price, so I went for it. Too bad I purchased it on EBAY, because now I have noone to return it to (like a Crutchfield, Sears, etc., etc.).

DVD player started to skip and freeze right from the inception and when I sent it back for Warranty repair, I even had to pay the $16.00 shipping costs.

Unit was returned after two weeks with a note saying a "cold solder joint" was repaired. Baloney. The so-called "repaired" unit continued to have the same problem.

After numerous telephone calls requesting a new Unit, I was told that UPS would pick up my Unit and a new one would be shipped out. UPS never came!

I then wrote to the CEO of Sensory Science and immediately received a call from Customer Service, who arranged for pickup of my Unit and sent out a new one. Guess what, the new Unit experienced exactly the same problem of skips and freezes. In addition, when "freeze-framing" a tape, the picture jitters and there's no provision for tracking in this freeze/slow-scan mode.

Based on the preious reviews of the DVR-5000, there is an obvious defect in either design or parts and Sensory Science now knows about it. I won't hold my breath for satisfaction.

I wouldn't buy another Sensory Science product if a 60" Plasma screen came as an free added incentive.
