Strength:

Denon reputation! set up is very easy and all you have to do is activate the DD & DTS bitstreams and your up and running with a great picture and excellent sound (via my 3802 ofcourse) Very happy!

Weakness:

At this price, none!

Bought this unit Brand New off eBay for $100.00! I had a Denon-2500 before, and I am running the 800 through my Denon AVR-3802 via the digital optical connection. The 2500 had a much better build quality although, the 800 performs every bit as good as any period!

Sound and image quality. Versatility. solid build quality.

Weakness:

Tray (cheap conception) but work fine. it do the job. Expensive for a DVD. Don't no if I pay a 100$ extra just for the name "Denon" regarding DVD-RV22K from Panasonic that as the same spec.

The model is (April 2002). 400$ CAD DVD fonction : The image is fantasticly clear. No artifac at all. The sound is crysp and clear whit optical output. Bad : When the DVD change layer (1 to 2), the image and audio freeze for a short moment (500ms). 3MB buffer was not enough nor don't work fine. It's true that the tray look cheap, but it work fine so... Also, the DVD have to be "Realy" clean and scatchless. If not, it skip nor freeze for a moments. Use Disk-cleaner before play any DVD. More important if it is a rented DVD. People don't pay attention whit rentall DVD. Probably true whit every DVD player. VCD fontion: This feature work great. I took some mpeg clip from internet, burn it on CDR as VCD and...yes, it work !!! Cool ! CD/CD-R/CD-RW/MP3 fonction: It accept CD, CDR nor CDRW. No problem whit this. Don't skip whit a good quality CD. It skip if the CD are scatch nor dirty. It work fine with MP3 to. I try mp3 on CDR and CDRW. Don't work in multi-session burn mode. The track sometime start whit no sound... Just have to restart the track. It's because there is an art image in the mp3... I think. Overall: Great DVD, solid build quality, Versatil, Sound and image superior quality.

Strength:

Fantastic overall performance.

Weakness:

Cheap, flimsy tray.

I've read some pretty nasty reviews on this DVD player, but I bought it anyway because I wanted something to match my Denon AVR1602 receiver. My only hang up with it is the tray. The tray seems as flimsy as a cheap consumer grade product. As far as performance goes I couldn't possibly have a complaint. I have Klipsch sub, B&W 602s2, CC6s2, and 600s3 with the Denon receiver and all Monster Cable and it sounds fantastic for music or home theater. When in DD or DTS it sounds better than any theater.

Strength:

Audio and vidio were both impressive, especially at this price.

Weakness:

Audio has become inconsistant in the right channel. All the Audioquest interconnects were checked, the tubes in my pre-amp and both amplifiers were checked. Installed my old Phillips, problem gone. It is in the shop now.

Due to the reviews I read here, I made sure that this was a 2002 (Feb) manufactured product. The sound was a significant improvement over my two year old extensively modified Phillips machine. The picture was also clearly (no pun intended) with my 43 Sony.

Transport Mechanism Is not worth the increase in price over the Panasonic RV31K Music Reproduction

I picked up the Denon DVD-800 on a price match for $500 CDN (still not that cheap). I compared this player to the Marantz 4200 using the in store speakers and headphones. In the store it sounded great. Once I got home I found the DVD player lacking when playing CDs. As soon as I opened the box and looked at the remote I had a sinking feeling that this was in fact a repackaged Panasonic RV31K. I also have the RV31K and did a comparison. The two sound quite similar. They both have the same back panel, remote control, features, osd, etc. I'm giving Denon the benefit of the doubt that they didn't just slap on their logo and mark up the price. Don't get me wrong, this isn't a bad player, but be aware of the similarities to the Panasonic RV31K which sells for MUCH less. I realize a lot of manufacturers repackage other transport mechanisms instead of manufacturing their own, but this has been one of the most blatant ripoffs I've seen (it appears very little was changed). Picked up a Marantz DV4200 instead and (despite the fact it is a repackaged Phillips) the audio quality when playing CDs matches most midfi (~$400 CDN)CD players. If you want a DVD player to play CDs go with the Marantz.

Strength:

Image quality, sound.

Weakness:

no zoom, no osd for mp3 tack names

I was looking for a DVD player that could handle cd-r and cd-rw as well as mp3, after looking around for a while I decided on this one. Excellent image quality, good sound, a nice remote, small but extremely functional, very nice menus. Despite what the manual says, the european model (region 2) DOES play mp3''s. Handles audio cd''s very well. It also plays VCD without a hitch. It lacks zoom capability - that would be nice but doesn''t bothers me much.

Weakness:

Marketing ripoff (just like bose)

This is a very good DVD player. The picture and sound are much better than my old sony 360 DVD player. But there is one thing is extremely wrong with this player. It is a marketing ripoff. You get the exact same player with panasonic''s RV 31 for over a $100 cheaper. When I found this out I returned it and went out and got the RV 31. The only difference is the front panel, everything else is the same. Remote, back outputs, menu''s, picture, sound. I paid $179 at Rex''s, a $120 savings
