Strength:

Excellent picture and sound quality from dvd's and excellent sound from music CD's.

Weakness:

No zoom, optical only.

The Denon sound quality from this player is excellent. I wanted to use this player for my CD player as well - and it has perfomed brilliantly so far.

It matches the AVR1602 perfectly.

Although there is no zoom ( I didn't use this on the SAST player I had previously anyway) and no digital coax connection (could be a problem if you are connecting other digital inputs), these are only minor gripes and a small trade-off for the overall performance. But it would be nice to know they were there if you wanted to use them sometime.

If you intend using your DVD player as your CD player, then the DVD 800 is definately worth a look.

Strength:

Picture and MP3 playback

Weakness:

Like all other DVDs, no mp3 file name dislay

This is a fabulous unit for the price in all its callings - video and audio.

I have a simple set-up with "S" video cable from the DVD to a Sony Wega TV ; DVD (which is also CD/mp3CDR) audio directly into the Denon DRA 685 stereo receiver, and TV audio into the Video Aux input on the receiver (for listening to TV through the stereo.
Very simple but very fine sounding, especially with high bit rate (160 - 192 kbps) mp3 files.

My system (I really like everything here):
Denon STEREO DRA 685 receiver----- (100 watts RMS/channel)
Denon DVD 800----- (with mp3 decoding)
Two pairs of JBL Control 5 monitors----- on the front wall (for that Phil Spector-like wall of sound)
Cerwin Vega LW 12 SubWoofer ----- connected with 2 Y's to preamp outs and (2) 25 foot line level AR Subwoofer cables.

Strength:

price, picture, features

Weakness:

outputs, possibly has minor glitches in the system

This is a great DVD player for the money. Overall I'm happy with the performance . . . it has a great picture, great audio, and all the features I will need. The only problem I've had is once it started playing the audio from a different track than the video was coming from, when I would stop the disc and play again it would do the same thing. I finally reloaded the dvd (Jurassic Park III) and everything was fine. Other than this isolated incident its been wonderful, and since almost every dvd player in this forum seems to have posts about wierd hardware troubles I wouldn't say this is out of the ordinary. The only other downfall is that it has limited audio outputs to choose from; doesn't affect me but others may want to check this out. I'm giving a four for value because I know there are cheaper players with the same features, but to be honest, I think I was buying the name. I'm giving a four for overall mainly because of the glitch that occured and because it lacks progressive scanning, but that would be expected from this price range (all the progressive scanning players in this range have such cheap chips that it's no better than a good analog player).

Strength:

Compared to other DVD's this Denon, even though on the bottom end of the Denon's will out perform other manufacturers middle to top of the range models. It is defenitily in a different class.

Weakness:

The MP3 is not OSD capable which would have ben nice, but the sound quality and processing is so good that it makes the wanted OSD not a must. The looks are plain.

This must be the best DVD/MP3 player ever. The sound quality is suppurb, the video processing is just out of this world.
I use it with the Kenwood KVF-X9050D THX AV receiver, Mission 705 series speakers and a LG Flatron and it mathes it well. The can pass this DVD as a THX unit. It realy out performs the competitive machines out here.
A pity we end up paying almost double for equipment in South-Afica.
I am realy impressed by this unit.
