Strength:

Multi-format, NTSC and PAL, MP3, CD-R and CD-RW, Firmware update to multi-region and Macrovision free!!!

Weakness:

Some models do not have composite output, only S-Video. No off button on remote... Have to get up and walk all the way to the player to turn it off.

The Apex line of DVD players is superior to almost any other available for one reason. With a relatively simple firmware upgrade you can modify the player that you OWN to do what you want it to do. No more restrictions about what discs you can play from which regions. No problems making legal back-up VHS copies of movies that you own on DVD. Add to that a player that can automatically read NTSC and PAL format, not to mention MP3, Video-CD, and a slew of other formats. If you have had enough of what some regulatory commission says you can and can't do with the electronic equipment in your home, the Apex 703 is a good answer.

Strength:

3Disc Changer, Karoake, MP-3, Jpeg capabilities

Weakness:

found none so far

while shopping for a reasonably priced DVD player, I ran across the APEX Digital AD 703. The first thing that caught my attention was the fact that it held 3-Discs, and then the price was outstanding. I purchased the player and brought it home, only to find out I got a whole lot more than I realized. You may xoom in on different scenes during movie play. It has the capabilities of playing Karoake VCD's or DVD's and two mics to sing with, MP3's, CD's and Kodak picture CD's. I am extremely satisfied with my decision to purchase this product and I strongly recommend it to others!!

Strength:

Versatile functions, long term performance, pretty good overall

Weakness:

internal 5.1 decoder; quality; remote SUCKS

I almost didn't buy this from all the reviews, but it's a really good player. It was fairly cheap; I mainly bought it for hte internal 5.1 decoding that it has built in, but I wound up buying a DTS reciever with digital inputs beacuse the internal decoder on the Apex dvd player sucks; it lags and is always behind the picture; it plays VCDs not too great; about every 5 minutes it looses lip sync, and in a few seconds rushes back up to catch up, this can get very annoying extremely fast.

It plays MP3s, even though the menu for MP3s is terrible; it plays on long term movie viewing sessions great: it never heats up, DVDs never get lock up the players software (althought i put Bring It On in, and it jammed up the door)

the dvd player plays great, and it's really good if u dont wanna spend a fortune and want decent quality; the buttons look like crap though

DVD Changer capable of playing Various Discs

Weakness:

Remote Control

I've had this player longer than a year and it has worked beautifully so far. It has all video+Audio connections (5.1) at the back. But I use only its S-video and Digital Coax with my Onkyo receiver and big screen Sony tv and pic+sound quality is great. It can play mp3 & CD-R/RW, VCD/SVCD, Kereoke, DVD, etc. I heard that its firmware is easily upgradable but I didn't need it so far.
My niece has Apex AD-600A which is also a very nice player.
Overall, for the amount paid, I think its a fantanstic DVD player/changer.

The only problem is remote controller. It doen't turn the unit off(AD-703 only), and it has on screen display turned on by default. Once you buy this you unit, you need to test it really well before you decide to keep it.
Good luck!

Strength:

so many functions.. MP3, VCD, karaoke, loophole menu...

Weakness:

reliability, video quality, OSD must be turned off every time you hit play

I bought this unit for my parents. Its functional (when it works) The first unit I got from circuit city wouldn't play T2 SE without blipping a lot. I think the video quality on it is okay. I'm using SVideo on a 32" TV so I can't be that discerning. I made circuit city price match Sam's Club at 159.99. Because i knew this unit had a tendency to fail i bought the 1 yr warranty for 15.99. What i really needed on this unit was the region free possibility (with loophole patch) as well as the karaoke function. The macrovision disable feature is nice for pirates i suppose but i don't care much about it. the pet peeve for this unit really has to be the OSD that pops up every time you play the disc you have to turn it off. i'm a little wary of the 3 disc changer portion... mechanics like that tend to die a lot. For those of you whose warranty has expired and are experiencing playback problems, you might want to try bringing it to a repair shop and have them tune the laser for you. Also, the lights in the front of the player keep flashing when you play back discs. For the price paid, it's a decent unit. However, if i had to buy a unit for myself i'd sacrifice the mp3 and karaoke for a more reliable player. If you really want all the features in one box at a low price, this one's for you. just consider the extended warranty.

Plays MMP3

Weakness:

Skips, and the color bleeds throughout the movie. Freezes.

At first the unit worked liked a charm. Then the Picture would freeze and would not let me stop or eject the disk. This would take a couple of minutes to eject the disk. Sometimes I would have to turn off and reboot it. The unit is loud and takes a while to start up. I am on my third unit and I don't think I would buy another. I bought a Sony 560d and it works great. For the price it was okay, but as the saying goes you get what you pay for..

Strength:

Multiple formats, price, multiple discs

Weakness:

No soft power button, dimmer does not dim all buttons, cheap menuing system, POOR Mp3 interface, cheap construction

For the money, at the time, this product couldn't be beat. A dvd changer that plays all kinds of formats, most importantly, mp3. However I was disappointed in several things.

The remote is terrible, but easily replaceable. The player has a "hard" power switch, meaning it takes physical force of depressing it to make it function so you can't even use a universal remote to turn it off an on.

The dim function is a good idea, but it doesn't turn off or dim the disc selection indicator buttons, which will flash on and off continuously during use.

The menuing system is useable, but cheap. The use of the sharp blue gets irritating after long use, especially when leaving the tv on while playing mp3's.

Which brings me to my second biggest complaint. The mp3 player interface really needs work. No long file names, no random play. A nice interface would greatly add to the value of this player, and sound visualizations (like plug-ins for winamp) would be a great addition.

Lastly, but not least. The overal build quality of the player is poor. I often have to "reboot" the player when it is skipping/hanging on dvds that play perfect in other players. I have since exchanged my older player for a new AD-703, and it has yet to act up. It did take several months for the first one to fail, so I'll give it that much.

Strength:

sound quality, plays mp3,you can upgrade to copy dvds on to vcr tapes and make the unit region free, and karaoke feature

Weakness:

the zoom is grainy,no optical output

i dont know why everyone is giving this a bad review.i recently bought an upgraded one and just being able to copy a dvd on to a vcr tape makes it a steal.this is the only player that i know that you can get for under $1,00 that does this.you.it plays dvds from any region to if you go to the loophole menu.no power on the remote can be fixed by hooking it up to the back of your receiver.than when you turn your receiver on it will come on.i like the zoom feature even though it is a little grainy.the karaoke feature is also great for family fun.it is also one of the only models that can play mp3's.for a couple hundred bucks this is a steal.i have not encountered any problems playing any of my dvds.if you get an upgraded one it might cost a little extra but it is the most versatile machine for the buck.
