Strength:

multi-player, karaoke

Weakness:

poor dvd player, no toslink, poor remote

Well, I took my chance and bought this player. Only because I only needed a second dvd player, I own a second generation toshiba, that's been very good to me. But first of all I just wanted a vcd karaoke player, for the price this is the best you can get out there, as far as I know. So bottom line this is not the dvd player to own for your main system, if you are buying it for another reason as using it for karaoke or playing mp3 of vcd, then it's more than fine specially for the price. I am giving it a four star for overall rating only because you can use it for so many other things, but for a dvd player I'll probably give it a 2.

Weakness:

No Random play on MP3, (a real weakness for me). Does not transition automatically in MP3 from disk 1 to disk 2; altogether negating the "changer adbvantage."
Loads very slowely.

A disappointment! The unit delivers what is advertised and that's it. Karaoke is of no interest to me.
But MP3 play is disappointing. (See above.) As for its "changer" capability, it might as well be a single unit, for all its use.
The User Guide is a catastrophe. It might as well be in a foreign language, for all its use.

Weakness:

The whole thing is a peice of J.U.N.K.!!!

Bought one and got it all hooked-up and the peice of junk wouldn't read a DVD. It kept insisting that I did not have a disc in the tray. After 5 or 6 tries, it finally loaded one and the movie started. I turned the unit off and tried again and it wouldn't read it again. It read CDs just fine. I boxed it up and exchanged it. The new one operated perfectly time after time, but about an hour into the movie, the color would go out or the screen would go completelt blank. Did this on 3 movies: ID4, T2, Lost World.
I am boxing this junker up as we speak....errr...type.
DON'T BUY ONE!!!

Weakness:

Noisy CD exchanger..general quality is not as slick as a SONY/Panasonic

I bought it to play my MP3 CDs and Video CD-Rs both NTSC and PAL...and it has'nt given any problem yet. I have a 21" monitor TV and so cannot make out if the picture has any problems. I noticed I could record a DVD onto VCR/VHS..
yippee!. Probably the only thing missing is CodeFree ability...but I'm not into watching movies outside Region 1.

I produce my own little Video CDs and wanted a player to
check them out. Use MGI VideoWave III and Adaptek-Roxio Platinum CD burning software. Everything works fine, except
the 1st-level-menu writing feature in Adaptek does'nt work
properly on the DVD player. You can't see the menu Titles.

Wonder how this player fares with SVCD-R or XVCD-R?

Strength:

Plays Video CDs

Weakness:

Overall quality which is obvious from previous posts

I took a chance and lost on this one.
I Bought this last week and tested out some VCDs I purchased from www.eurekamovies.com. They worked ok but fast action was noticably blocky. So, I decided to try out a DVD rented from Block Buster. Popped it in and all the damned thing did was show that it was "loading" the DVD... waited... waited... re-inserted the DVD a couple of times... waited 5-10 minutes and wow... it came on... Picture quality seemed pretty good. Much better than VCD. Zoom kind of sucked because it cut off the top and bottom of the screen and was a bit grainy expecially at 3X. Sound quality was good... I then turned stopped it and ejected the drawer and closed it again. Then the wait for loading began again. What a JOKE! I've packed it up for its return home (Circuitcity).

Strength:

Price! Updragable Firmware! Versitility.

Weakness:

Cheap! Bet it will break in a month.

Download the firmware. Upgrade the box. Turn off F*CKING Macrovision so you can watch a DVD without having to buy a new TV. Feel very happy that at least SOME manufacturers understand that when you buy a piece of equipment, you want to be able to USE IT!!! I did my research, and got exactly what I wanted, a DVD player that I can use through my VCR on my old TV and can play DVDs that aren't available in the US. I'm really, really happy. Oh yeah, and I tried VCDs, and ISO MP3 CDs, everything works.

Strength:

Multi-function. Only dvd/vcd/mp3/karoake/cdr/ multi-disc player out there for low price.

Weakness:

Remote and slow reads ( Maybe because of multi-function)

I have tried to talk myself out of this because of "You get what you paid for" experiences but this system that I got satisfied my growing collection of cheap karoake vcd's. The sound output from karoake is weak because of the built in control but I by-passed this using my mixer. My kids enjoy singing. I just can't afford those $500+ laser discs karoakes.
The picture quality on the Dvd is great specially with s-video connection. I had one problem on what I thought was skipping or waviness which I also experience on my VCR for a fraction of a second but it always appeared on the same frames or scene so it must be the way it got recorded.
A few more months and maybe I can afford progressive scan dvd.

Strength:

Dolby decoder (supposedly) and 3-disc tray.

Weakness:

UNRELIABILITY

I was a little skeptical about getting this product from all the reviews, but I took a chance...and lost. Of the 5 DVD movies I tried on this machine, I had some kind of 'technical' issue with all 5. Many of them freezing up and causing the machine to abort. I would then have to turn the unit off, open/close the tray for it to load again. Not exactly what I enjoy doing.

So, I went for reliability in trusty ol' Sony. The DP560 has many more features that are worth the little extra, even a power and open/close buttons on the remote.

Although $179 sounds great, if it doesn't work, it's worth nothing.

Strength:

Karaoke feature, price, ability to play a variety of different formats

Weakness:

Reliability, picture quality, remote

I probably used this machine a total of ten hours before it died. Luckily, I had the extended warranty. I was able to unload this piece of junk. The karaoke feature is nice, but it's not worth the poor quality and reliability. The remote doesn't have an on/off switch.
