Strength:

Price, Functions, did I mention price?

Weakness:

Cabinet is VERY light(put something on top to keep it from sliding when you hit the power button), no Coax input/output

Well, I wasn't looknig for the BEST DVD player out there, BUT I did want something that was the best MY money could buy..I couldn't be happier...sure, it's a lightweight cabinet(I put a cerami statue on top to keep it from movieng), and there isn't a Coax input/output, BUT since I have RCA jacks anyway, I guess it doesn't really matter..it has a ton of functions, will play all the different type of DVD/CD's out there, and the picture quality and sound was great..would I get a better player? sure..if I had more money, and I was going to upgrade my TV as well...BUT if all you want to do is just be able to watch DVD's(for all the extra's on them)...this is it! And like I said, it does it well too...have had it for 6 months, no complaints whatsoever...

I have purchased 2 of these units as Xmas gifts. Each at $70 a piece (early morning day after thanksgiving deal).

I did not have any tray issues as others have spoke about. And this was true on both units.

I still have my original Apex, and it has been flawless for the past 2 years. That is why I bought 2 as gifts...

Strength:

ability to play my homemade vcd. and other cd formats.

Weakness:

abit dark on some movies.

Just here to instate that this model indeed have the 'stuck' dvd tray problem. If any buyer of this model finds that the tray does not come out, u can try to pull it out with two fingers on its side, dont use anything else (like scissors or keys since this will surely break it), then gently pull the try out. u'll just have to try this before returning the machine.

with the stress out, enjoy.

the video quality is good, audio is good-considering its low price.

I encourage any purchaser of Apex or any other not so well known brands to buy those 'extended warranties'. i got a 1 year plan for extra 10 bucks. cost totalling 96 dollars.

well worth it. even the vcds played is of excellent quality.

Strength:

price (if you get one that works)

Weakness:

no quality control?

I bought the 1500 because I needed a second DVD player that the kids could use. CC had them for $79, so the price was right. I had read the reviews for this model here so I was aware of the potential problem with the tray and sure enough, I had the problem. Easy to fix (CAREFULLY "force" it out) and tray then worked properly (why is this not part of some simple quality check at factory?). Anyway, worked like a charm after that for a few days. Then all of a sudden, no picture, sound and weird stuff in the LCD.
I figured I'd go into the setup menu and check the settings. They were all screwy, but I was unable to properly change them and even if I was able to change something, it kept defaulting to something else. So, back it went to CC and I purchased a different make & model.
Too bad because if you do get one with no bugs , it's quite a deal!

Strength:

easy opperation easy hook up.

I got the 1500 as a gitf. At present I have 25" stero
TV and a old Hi-fi recieve. I was able to hook it up
and had very good sound. With it hooked just to the tv
the sound was still clear. I used cables that was better
than what was in the box. This product has all the needed
whistle and bells that you need for a starter DVD. I may up
grade when I get a HDTV and this small unit will work
well in the bedroon or study

Strength:

Great picture, good build quaility.

Weakness:

No digital out (coax or optical)

For $80 it does the job for DVD video playback. It skimps on some features but the picture is sharp and is comparable to just about any other DVD player out there.

On the other hand it lacks one of the greatest strengths of audio playback on a DVD: there's no digital out on this model. Without digital out for Dolby Digital or DTS you may as well be using a VCR since you'll only get standard Dolby surround instead of 5.1 digital sound. In the end, lack of 5.1 sound kind of defeats the purpose of purchasing a DVD player. For another $30 you can fine DVD players that have at least a coaxial digital output for 5.1 sound.
