Strength:

Good player for the price.

Weakness:

Too dependant on the remote.

The Dog ate the remote and now there is no way to turn it on. There is an on button on the unit, but it just puts the player in a standby mode. So don''t loose the remote!

Strength:

Solid picture, fantastic MP3 menu, quiet mechanism

Weakness:

Cheap build, LED vey bright, unusual size

It seems nearly every DVD player under $800 has something wrong with it. If you hate spending $250 only to find out that your player doesn''t do "this" right; then I''d go with the Apex-1500 for $80. It''s by far the cheapest element in my home entertainment system, but it gets the job done. Meanwhile I''ll save up for that Integra or Marantz DVD player.

Strength:

Cheap, easy to modify and *if you get a good unit*, ok quality for the price.

Weakness:

Quality control spotty, make sure to buy it somewhere with a GOOD exchange policy.

I mostly bought this unit for it''s MP3 and VCD CDR playback properties. It also had to be easy to modify to disable Macrovision as I run it thru my VCR to get to my TV (Macrovision made that impossible). Everything else it does is a bonus for me. For the price it was hard to go wrong anyways, $135can (thats like $84usd).

Strength:

Good for your cahs value, not bad playback. The level of heat it produces if a DVD is in for more than 6 hours is rather nasty, it will burn the graphics right off the root menu of the DVD. No tray problems, can operate most any disk, some rentals were skippy and sticky. The CD and MP3 is marginal

Weakness:

Choppy playback on CD and MP3, it overheats to extremes, tightly packed remote, some programmability, audio has potential to become distorted at any moment. Numerous other difficulties.

A get what you pay for value, it will work for just a fool around with because you got a DVD for christmas player, but it is not anything to give a medal to. Lots of quality control problems that could be remedied at no extra effort. MY ADVICE: NEVER PUT A CD IN THIS PLAYER!!! It has the potential to generate enough heat to almost start a fire.

Customer service anaylasis: All around total garbage. Anyone ever try their 1-800 number? If you can get through, dont bother even speaking, their operators ( if you can get past the recordings ) leave a vocabulary outside of profanity to be desired. I strongly recommend that you drive to APEX headquarters and speak to someone personally.

All in all, a *fair player at a cheap price.

Strength:

Price Price and Price. Digital coaxial out.S-Video O/P. MP3 on CD-RW. VCD

Weakness:

Remote. Cabinet construction is flimsy.

I bought the AD-1500 for 69.99 from CC. I am connecing every thing thru a Sony STR DE845 A/V receiver. I tried a a Region 1 Movie (Jurassic park) a Multi region Movie (some South Asian movie) MP3 on CD-R and regular CDs.

The Dolby Surround was breath taking! The picture quality is very good (a bit dark, but no pixelation skipping etc.)

The Box is very flimsy. I remidied it by keeping my Websters dictionary on it!

But if you have a older TV that does not have a Video RCA jack, you will have to use a Radio Shack RF modulator. Trying to connect it thru your VCR will not help (From what a friend told me - None of the DVDs can be connected thru a VCR).

Do your selves a favour by using "at least" the Radio shack Gold plated connectors. the Cables that come in the box suck.

Weakness:

Quality control on critical defect

I purchased two of the AD-1500 models for gifts and the disk tray on one of the units did not work. Display showed tray as opened or closed, but no sign of life from tray at all. Could be a major problem area for Apex, judging by other posts.
The other unit vibrates excessively while playing in my opinion, but picture & audio quality are good. Not sure if this is common in similar units.

Strength:

Excellent value. Very good unit for the casual movie watcher without an elaborate home theater system.

Weakness:

The remote buttons are too close together. The manual could give more detail on the audio output options.

I was skeptical of this lightweight box with minimal controls given to me at christmas, but they put DVD's in laptops so how massive does the case need to be? The unit performed excellent out of the box; no troubles with the disk door as mentioned in other reviews. As expected for a DVD player, the video and audio quality is supperior to my four-head Sony VCR. The set-up was intuitive. If you installed a VCR, you can do this. I do not have an elaborate home theater system: A JVC 27" screen, an Onkyo reciever and two Allison CD-6 speakers. Nonetheless, the movie audio through my little system is terrific. The manual is a bit thin and the remote buttons are crowded together. There is no digital video out, but since I am not getting HDTV in the near future that's not an issue. Overall it is a very, very good value for someone who wants to add DVD to their existing television.
