I am very impressed with the 580s clarity, timbre, detail, comfort, and lack of coloration, however, they seem a bit dark and laid back, especially when listening to any hard-driving music, leaving me wondering where the SLAM is.

Strength:

sonic accuracy, comfort

Weakness:

none yet

I have had these for one month now and I love them. They sound so sweet, accurate, refined, just downright excellent. I don't quite understand the durability complaints in previous posts. They seem well-made to me. Yes, I've seen thicker cables, but just be careful in the way you handle them and they will be fine. In my experience, a lot of problems/complaints regarding durability or construction issues stem from mishandling. You have to treat your expensive stereo equipment with care, it's delicate.
The pro-logic processor is just OK, I'll likely use it for TV watching. Overall, the sonic quality and comfort of this unit is very impressive. It's really hard to take them off after a listening session. You just get transported into the world of the music/artist you are listening to, and that's really what it's all about and why we do this, isn't it?

When I was small, I asked my mother "mommy mommy! Why are headphones called 'cans'?" She answered "go buy a pair of HD 580s and you'll find out." So, I did. I put them on, revelled in the sound, then put on my old pair of Yamaha RH-5s for comparison's sake. *Smack*...I saw the light at the end of the tunnel. Simply put, if you've ever wondered the same question, give these a test drive.

Simply put: "The best headphones I ever heard"
I have tried the 500's,570's,and 590's. The 590's are the only ones that came close but lacked in bass and were more expensive. I have not heard the 600's but I can only imaging since they are $300. You can also forget about any sony headphones, they don't even come close. The 580's simply have the cleanest and most full musical reproduction I have ever heard in a set of phones. They even work well with my protable CD player but get ugly when my volume is max due to the low power of the portable's amp. On my Yamaha receiver they simply play loud and clean at any volume. I have yet to hear them distort. Awesome, I give it 5 stars all the way because of the great value!

open sound

Weakness:

get a bit warm around the ears

This is just to let you 580 enthusiasts out there that I noticed an ad from Richer Sounds in UK for 580's reduced from Pds 199 to 69 (that's approx US$105). The lowest I've ever seen them.
For your info I've had a pair for 6 months and they are wonderful but do need good amplification.

Strength:

Clear and neutral sound

Weakness:

Not for bass freaks

I always used Sennheiser, last pair that I used was the reference 540. It died on me after 8 years of duty, so I went out in search for a new one. I was initially interested in the 600, but this one was almost 2x as expensive, so ik settled for the 580, which was on offer. Beautiful highs and mids, warm deep bass, you'll be heering things you've never heard before! Sony sounded a bit more powerful in deep bass, but I just think that the Sony really emphasises the bass, and the Sennheiser just reproduces the music as it was intented.
If you like techno/dance: stay away from Sennheiser, there not made for that. They will desort at high volumes and deep bass. However, play The Wall from Pink Floyd on these things and you'll never want to take them off again.....

5 stars for value, especially at the price that I paid, 4 stars overall because the 600 is even a little bit better....

Strength:

Natural sounding , Great instrumental definition, Feels great to wear

Weakness:

none

First I bought the HD 570. I was so disapointed over them that I contacted Sennheiser and asked how they managed to develop so bad sounding headphones. They offered me to come over to testlisten/change to another model. When I heard the 580 I was sold. I like when the music isn`t colored too much by the HIFI equip. You listen through and I think that this headphone is as near as you can get "studio sound".
I have tried Grado/AKG etc but no one gets as close as these (well HD600 sounded little better but costs more $$).
Great service by Sennheiser (Agent Norway), they listen to the customer and wants to help them to get what they`re looking for. Great Product!!!

Strength:

Beautiful sound. Very open spacious. Comfortable

Weakness:

None sofar came with DSP didn't take it out of the box

After reading many reviews on headphones I decided to put to pasture my old sony headphones. I could not belive my ears as the sound leaped out with astonising detail and spaciousness. I listen to a lot of Pipe organ music and these headphones bring out the registers (wooden connectors on the keyboard) of the organ. I thought at first my wife was doing something in the back ground but I soon realize it was the ticking noises of these registers. It made it sound very real. I've been to a few concerts and it has that concert feel to it. They are comfortable and look well built. I pushed in the connectors a little bit to make sure they were in as another reviewer suggested. Have these units hooked up to the JVC s1000 mini high fi. This unit can be used as a transport CD. Will be purhcasing the MG Head amp and later a D/A procesor to sweeten the sound =)

Strength:

Smooth, detailed sound, comfort, weight (it is very light).

Weakness:

None. (maybe the cheap looks of the cable?).

This Headphone is superb! I went for the best (with the best prize ofcourse), and i got them. The cables look a bit cheap, but with a reason?! They prevent the possible noise from rubbing it with other objects, and it works (no noises a all). I can use it with my portable MD recorder, so no amp needed. These headphones are simply the best, get them now!
