I just purchased a pair of the HD580 Preicision headphones. They are superb! They were a bit tight on my head initially, but within a day of use they became more comfortable. The sound is smooth, accurate, and detailed. Many of the details in recordings I had barely noticed or not at all with my previous headphones (the Sony MDR-V6), such as the breathing of Stephen Kovacevich in his recording of the Brahms Concerto no. 1, are fully revealed. These headphones are in every way exceptional--sound, build quality, and comfort.

hey, i bought these things for $200 from audio advisor. I cant afford good speakers, but these are an even better alternitive. they sound very detailed (from lows to highs) the tweeter on these things are very sweet sounding. you must buy these cans! more enjoyable than speakers because you dont wake up the neighbors.

This is not specifically about the HD 580s, but about Sennheiser phones in general. I had a pair of Sennheiser headphones back in the early seventies with detachable chords to each earpiece and ... the sound went out in one earpiece.
This review has no quibble with the sound of the product, but to not have rectified this problem in almost thirty years makes one wonder if this part of the product was subcontracted out to the Huntingdonshire County Council.

The HD580's are by far the best dynamic headphones on the market.
The 590's are a cosmetic upgrade (or downgrade depening on your opinion) but they include a single detatchable cable insted of the old style one cable from each ear annoying cables.

If you need the absolute best sound for under a grand, you cant go wrong with these headphones. I've also found Sennheiser to be extremely responsive to email and customer service in general.

Correction...the 600's not the 590's are the cosmetic upgrade.

The sound is super clear and 3-D. It has light weight and is very comfortable. You can find it on sale at J&R and Headroom for only $199. Buy one ASAP. No, GRAB one when there is still available.

I did alot of research prior to maing my decision. I bought the 580's based upon the reviews here. I found them at Headrom for $199.00 with a free Prologic Headphone connector/amp. Upon first listen I was very impressed with the detail.Subtle clear highs and good low end. With the free prologic unit connected to my TV I watched Brahm Stokers Dracula. I was blown away by the sound and detail. Every mouse step and Crack of lightening were brought out and made the movie that much more enjoyable. A bargain at 199.99 when you consider the free accessory. I find myself listening to these more then my PSB Stratus Golds.

I just got my 580's today and I am very impressed. I ordered them from Audio Advisor.com for $199.99 and also got the DSP PRO for free. I have been listening to these heaphones for about six hours now and I am very happy with my buy. First off, these headphones are very detailed. The are mids are very clear and the highs are clear as well and don't drown out the mids. These are not very bassy headphones though, but I don't like a whole lot of bass in my music to begin with. The lows do come through very well.
There is one thing that I am very suprised about, the DSP PRO. I just got done watching The Empire Strikes Back and I was very impressed by the surround sound. When I ordered the headphones I was not too interested in the DSP, but now that I have tried it I am happy I got the deal I did. I heard things in Empire that I had never heard in my 19 years of watching the movie. It does really recreate a Pro Logic surround field, almost better than my $800 Yamaha Amp. This is the best $200 I have ever spent.

Wow.Get them.
They will make you a god.

I got em off ebay (spidergear auction) for a dirt cheap $128.
I now hear parts of songs that I never knew existed. Try out "One" by U2 and listen for the acoustic guitar
in the background. You can hardly hear it on speakers. With these, its as if you can reach out and touch it.
In my opinion, these are the best dynamic headphones money can buy. The 600s are marginally better, but not worth the extra money. The 4 differences between them is: 1)600s come in a nicer box 2)600s have stainless steel on the backs on the earpieces while the 580s have plastic 3)600s have carbon fiber all over the place while the 580s have plastic 4)600s have better matched drivers (600s and 580s use the same driver from what i hear, but the 600s are suppousedly matched better).
I've compared these with magneplanars, and these sound car clearer and better.
Once again,
Wow.
Get them.
They will make you a god.

Fantastic sound when they are working. I have heard a lot of 'phones and these are hands down one of the best. They have major problems with the wire harness staying connected to the earpieces, however. I even sent them into Sennheiser to be repaired a while ago, and they still have the same problem of constantly going dead in one or both channels. The only (temporary) solution is to push in both connectors by hand. A gentleman posted below about the same issue. Even setting them down gently can cause them to go dead. I bought them brand new at full retail price from a local dealer. I have treated them with the utmost respect and they have never been dropped or abused in any way, this just seems to be a major design flaw, with some units exibiting it more than others. So buyer beware.... if Sennheiser reads this I would be happy to accept a replacement unit, and perhaps it might change my mind in terms of your quality. Even 99 cent phones often do not go dead, at least not every 5 minutes. I have thought of hard soldering the connections but that would obviously destroy the units. Have fun....
5 star sound and 1 star electrical design/quality. Thus, 3 stars.
