Actually I have 525 headphones from Sennheiser. I must say that for 60$ (refurbished from ubid.com with 1 year warranty) you can't beat this deal. The sound is clear, crisp and detailed. Bass was disturbing at the beginning because all previous headphones I had, did not have it at all. Bass is well controlled and tight. Really powerfull headphones that have a lot of dynamics (lots of kick, probably would be good for home theater listening when you
don't want to disturb anybody). Some people mentioned low power ratings. I must say that these headphones deliver lots of sound. I did not try it with portables but I tested it with Onkyo CD-player and Yamaha keyboard and no problemo. Sound is really open (that's because of open design, when you cover outer openings on the headphones you will notice difference, it will loose its spaciousness. Strong build quality, not most comfortable but not tiring. I did not compare them with Grado SR-60 (great headphones around the same price, maybe slightly more expensive 5 - 10 $). I did not select Grado's because I did not want to readjust head band whenever my wife and me would have to use them.
Anyway, can't go wrong with any of both headphones. Nice listening.

Strength:

Tremendous bass, outstanding mid and highs.

Weakness:

Ear cushions are not removable causing difficult cleaning

Too bad for the rest of you. I found mine at Goodwill for $4.99! Wow! These put the AKGs to shame. I listen to a lot of Wagner (Richard), and without good bass if just isn't Wagner. These 'phones blow me out of the water. I just can't get enough of them.

I also have the Stax Pro 50s, and the HD535s are comparable to them, without the need for the power amp (Carver m1.0t). I run these through my pre-amp (Carver C4000) and the dynamic range, orchestral detail and overall sonic excellence are without peer. As a bonus, the ear cushions fit over my little ears with maximum comfort. Too bad they cannot be removed and cleaned, for there's no telling what kind of cooties I may catch. Whatever, it's all worth it.

Strength:

For $80 you can't go wrong.

Weakness:

Although very comfortable, can be a little hot after extended wear.

These headphones transcend both space and time. The Neville Brothers performed an excellent show last night at Tipitina's(1982).My seats were great, but some woman kept screaming in my ear... Patricia Barber was outstanding in July '99 at The Green Mill although someone dropped a glass at the table next to me...The Dead had a little equipment problem during the first set at the Providence Civic Center('74), but put on an inspired perfomance...These phones put you at the shows, not front row, but just far enough back to get the sense of the entire performance. Not bad on studio recordings, too! Can only imagine how the HD600's sound.

Strength:

clarity in sound, comfort

Weakness:

lacking in bass

These are great headphones if you can get them for $50-60, but I wouldn't pay more. Compared to the Grado SR-60's, which can also be purchased for $50-60, the Grado's are better sounding, in my opinion. Both headphones have really clear sound, but the Grado's have more bass, and seem less power-consuming. The Sennheisers are more comfortable, which enables listening for hours, as the Grado's start to hurt a bit, but that may different for different people, I guess.

Strength:

Strong and clear bass, comfortable

Weakness:

The cord has a bad connection at the plug...right channel cuts out from time to time. I'll replace the connector if it gets too annoying...

Excellent clean sound quality with crisp highs...that stays clean beyond any volume I can tollerate.

While the low bass is clear and strong, it doesn't do much for me with the lowest of bass (below 30hz) found rarely in some synth recordings.

Strength:

clarity, crispy and good allocation of sounds

Weakness:

the balance and depth of the "tone" could be a little bit better.

I am suprised once in a while when a song shows me the real spirit of this phone. It's full of suprises in a positive way. I realise that most music is not of a certain "quality" i would prefer. This phone reveals almost every secret..and for that i value the quality of the phone as very good. I think the price paid compaired to the quality is very good .

Ok these are the best phones Ive ever used. Tried some Koss, and various Sony cans. I ordered these instead, because of the great reviews here. Im so happy I did!

The only thing I do with them is play Pc games and listen to music though.

I have read about a flimsy cord, and must say, it doesnt look to flimsy to me. Just dont step on it, or let your little brothers use it. =)

Strength:

Great fidelity and clarity

Weakness:

wires

First off, I usually drive these from my home stereo. I have plugged them into my Panasonic DVD portable to A/B them on the same reordings, where they sound fine, just a little weaker in the low end.

After reading these reviews, I thought the 535'd blow away my speakers (Paradigm Titans). The main thing I notice is a slightly better bass response than the Titans. The slightly better bass response makes a difference in that I prefer to listen to classical recordings through my Sennheisers instead of my speakers. Otherwise they're in the same ballpark as my Titans, especially on clarity -- I clearly run into the limitations of the vast majority of recordings. But when you hit a high quality recording, they really show you what music SHOULD sound like.

The main thing I notice after moving from wireless is being tethered to the equipment. Don't get me wrong -- the sound is much improved over wireless, but after adjusting to wireless headphones it's a bit confining. Guess I'll just suffer with my old cans when I'm mowing the lawn and such...

With regad to chosing between the 535 versus the 580... Since the 535s are almost always better than the recording and can be driven fairly well off a prtable, I think it's a better value. But if you're willing to splurge, you probably will notice the difference on a home stereo in a small percentage of your recordings.

Strength:

Good balance of frequencies, light weight, comfortable, easily powered by portable CD-player (volume wise).

Weakness:

Few

I'm amazed at how detailed these headphones. I hear things in my CDs that I've never heard before. Their design makes them extremely comfortable... I could wear these things for hours.

Currently I'm running them off my Panasonic minisystem and my Philips eXpanium CD/MP3 Player. Volume-wise, both have no problem driving these headphones. I am, however, dissappointed at the lack of transpencey and airiness. Likely the sources (cd player and minisystem) are the cause. I'll give them a try on my Sony Reciever and see if that cures the problem. I will also try plugging them into my computer sound card. I knew that my portable CD player wouldn't be a good source, just trying to get some input.
