Strength:

built well, tray is quiet and fast, CD text, phones output, brings out the music

Weakness:

no power button on remote

I spent the 8 months upgrading my first stereo system into a better music/ht system. I sold the old Technics gear which was purchased when I was in high school and bought the following:

Yamaha 496
Panasonic rv30
Sennheiser HD570
Paradigm speaker (Minis, CC350, Titans, PDR10)
Hitachi 50" screen

This is what my budget allowed.

The main reason I bought the 775 was the dvd player did not support CD-R. I looked at the changers available from Marantz and Denon, but Marantz was out of my budget, and the sales people all said that the Denons have had quality problems in the past. I listened to them all and really didn't notice too much differences in sound.
With the Marantz unit ruled out due to budget constraints, it was between the Denon and Yamaha. Comparing the two units, the tray for the 775 was more quiet and a little faster than the Denon, and I liked the looks of the Yammie better than the Denon. With the bonuses going to the Yamaha unit, I opted for it. The fact that I was offered a discontinued discount which brought the price down to $459CDN including taxes and a 5 year extended warranty made my decision so much easier.

The 775 is connected to the 496 with the supplied interconnects. It sounds different than the fibre-optic connection of the dvd player. The sound is a bit more detailed, and the dynamics have improved also. Not much tonal difference from the old to new. Using headphones for late night listening is enjoyable. Everything just sounds the way I like it to sound.
CD text feature, although it does nothing for the sound, is neat. The tray is pretty smooth, quick, and quiet. The display is difficult to read from a distance, but easy to not care about.
This unit is great for a tight budget. It has a serious sound to dollar ratio. Hopefully the next generation of changers is as this one. Good Job, Yamaha

Strength:

Nice Quality, Sweet Sound

Weakness:

Small display, confusing remote

I've always thought that CD players were all the same, I mean digital is digital, eh? I just upgraded my speakers to Boston Acoustics VR 975 and noticed something was not right. So I disconnected my costco teac cd changer and purchased a denon dcm-370 cd changer. I was neck-and-neck between the denon and the yamaha CDC-775 and picked up the denon on the salesman's recomendation. The denon was a tremendous improvement, but when the carrier mechanism engaged the cd player turned into a static generater. I exchanged the denon ($300) for the yamaha ($350). The extra fifty was worth it for the sound alone. The yamaha has a much richer, more detailed, more natural sound than the denon did. I'm grateful that the denon broke.

Strength:

Awesome sound, quiet fast tray. A very nice unit!

Weakness:

Couple this with a decent amp, and you'll need a very good set of speakers. I know I need to upgrade!

I think I got the last one available in Australia - they're not making them anymore. And, I'm GLAD!!

Not a single skip, fault, or problem in about 6 months since I bought it. Highly recommended.

All of you guys that have this player hooked up with the toslink are really missing the boat. The d to a in this is better then most of the d to a's in any Reciever. Get some good analog cables and hook it up that way, and get what you paid for. Heck you could get a philips and hook it up digital if you wanted the sound using the toslink is going to be really close. The reason you get this player over the 675 is because of the pro bit chip but when you use the digital out you baypass that.

Strength:

Ease of use, good sound, in my price bracket (just!)

Weakness:

None apparent so far.

I bought this unit today!

It sounded the best of the bunch in the shop on my CDs (Pink Floyd, Genesis, Simply Red, Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel) and had the convenience of the changer.

I've got it home and it sounds great! The bass is punchy, the treble is bright, vocals clear and sax sounds awesome. The other components are NAD 304 amp and Paradigm 9SE speakers. So far so good.

Unfortunatley I can't do a back to back with the old NAD 501, because that died and was going to cost more than the thing was worth to repair (servo blown up).

Maybe I could have done better for the dollars, but I needed a unit quickly - you can only survive so long without good music!

I just bought this earlier this week and it sounded great out of the box. I got an overall smoother response from my system.

Strength:

Great Sound!!

Weakness:

skips - dropouts? seems to have difficulty reading thrue
smudges - fingerprints

I agree with all of the above reviews - listen to this player and you will be impressed.

Is it just me or does it seem to skip with cd's that I normaly wouldn't have any trouble with??????
Someone give me there opinion - I find it gets stuck and hangs on cd's my cheap sony would play without complaining once - I had that so so sony, with the jog dial - 5 disc mag. and single deck - the Sony didn't sound special - but it played everything and skiped 5 times in almost as many years - I want your opinion nicoli31@yahoo.com

Strength:

Great value. Silent, fast mechanisms.

Weakness:

I had higher expectations of Yamaha. First one didn't read CDs.

I also ordered my 775 from the military exchange catalog for $249 US (like someone else here). It came direct from Japan. The first one I received would not read CDs, so I sent it back and got my second a week later. My first impressions were that it wasn't all I expected it to be. I almost get the sneaking suspicion that Yamaha markets their sub-par units through AAFES, especially since it was packaged with a *special* military exchange warranty card.

For background purposes, my system consists of (relevant components):

Denon AVR-2700 receiver
Klipsch KSF 10.5 L&R towers
Sony DVP-S 5000 DVD player (used for comparison)

After a 24-hour burn-in, I compared the 775 to my DVD player through both analog and digital outputs (I use audioquest and illuminati cables for those who care). I'm not at all impressed with the on-board D/A converter. At first it sounded thin and "fuzzy." Although that has since disappeared, it is still only slightly better than the D/A converter in my DVD player. Judging from the reviews I read here, I had hoped for more. The converter in my receiver is clearly superior. Sorry, Yamaha fans. I've decided to use the optical digital output and bypass leave the D/A converting for my receiver. In a digital to digital comparison, it sounds a bit warmer and fuller than my DVD player, and I am quite satisfied.

Despite all the bashing I've done so far, I still must say that I am at least satisfied with this changer. At $250, it was a steal (not just based on SRP). It's classy looking, and well built (the second one, that is). And it's loaded with extra features.

Strength:

Solid construction, silent operation, warm sound, surprisingly dynamic soundstage

Weakness:

No coax out, cluttered remote

I bought this player six months ago when my old JVC player was on the fritz. I auditioned a Denon and a few Sony ES models in the same price range on a system similar to mine at Sound Advice.

The Sony sounded too bright and the Denon was $160 dollars more. The Yamaha's sound was warmer and the soundstage was wider when compared to the Sony ES models. I also liked the drawer mechanism on the Yamaha--it just seemed heavier. In fact, the entire player is solid as a rock when compared to other 5 disc changers. In the end, I didn't hear the $160 difference in the Denon, so I bought the Yamaha and I can't be happier.

I haven't had any problems playing any of the discs in my collection as some of the other reviews have; my Yamaha hasn't missed a beat. I would like to add that the more I listen to my Yamaha, the richer the music becomes.

The remote is a bit cluttered, but functional, and as for the lack of coaxial out: I don't think anyone can tell the difference between the coax and optical, but I would've liked to have had the option. I have a Yamaha RXV 795 receiver, so I use the optial out (the DAC is great in my receiver). However, the Pro Bit processor is outstanding so try the analog output if you have an older receiver.

If you are in the market for a 5 disc changer, this one deserves an audition. I believe that it's one of the best out there for $300.

My system:
Yamaha RXV 795
Yamaha CDC 775
Paradigm Studio 40v2 Mains
Monster Cable XP digital interconnect
Monster Speaker Cable

Strength:

Excellent detail, warm overall tonal balance, good soundstage, solid build, a great value!

Weakness:

Some info on display difficult to read, (from a distance)

This is a superb sounding player, and every bit as good as indicated in the other reviews posted here. The detail brought out of my cd's is simply breath-taking! The clarity and depth that I thought was lacking in many recordings has surfaced and many cd's that I found to harsh to listen to on other units are tamed by this player. Build quality is good, and controls are well placed and logical. And unlike some other reviewers, I don't have any problem with the remote. I purchased my unit from YAWA audio on the internet and was very impressed by their knowledge, prompt service, and excellent customer service. You may pay a bit more, but these are true factory warranty covered units, as they are authorized for their products. Please check out this Yamaha player, and to quote another reviewer, give this bad boy a listen!
