Strength:

Picks up EVERYTHING on the CD. Great soundstage!

Weakness:

Remote and LCD display.

Damn...

Sound wise, this CD player will really blow you away. This was the most expensive component in my system at $500 CDN above all my other components but did it ever make a difference!

I remember someone saying, "If it's in the CD, you'll hear it". He was exactaly right. Make sure you do have excellent quality media and masters, because if your CD or the master is poor (Say a poor remastered CD from long ago), it'll really sound like junk.

The unit reproduces beautiful sound, crisp, clean, percise, a little too percise. Nothing is missed and everything is passed on, even junky background noise that others won't pickup. This is why you shouold be a little careful in picking up this unit as if your CD collection is full of bad media, or burned CD's, or MP3's it will sound bad and flat. There is no give from this player.

I would normally go into reviewing the qualities I heard from this player from the 4 discs that I normally use (Cowboy Bebop, Faye Wong, Boyz II Men, Vanessa Mae), but they all just sounded so percise and open, it would hard to pick out any real shortcomings or issues this player had.

The only issue I have with this is the fact that the LCD screen is tough to view, and I would not mind seeing a little better quality remote for what I paid for this, as it is a little plain.

Overall, killer product, love it, would definitely recommend it. There are much better players out there but not for this kind of price. You can't get better bang for the buck.

Strength:

Big and wide soundstage, nice bass and dynamics.

Weakness:

None (maybe the display).

David,

Your reviewed is flawed. How can you not even a/b the CD player against others and give it 2 stars? Maybe it was the speakers, the room, amp, preamp, music?

A buddy and I wholeheartedly picked the Adcom over the other players I listed. We demoed everything in one room with the same 2 songs from Jennifer Warnes the Hunter and Sarah McLachlan Surfacing CD. Energy Audissey 5+2 speakers, Adcom gfp750 preamp(sweet piece), adcom 5802 amp.

BTW, the Adcom 5300 is a nice amp for $350. I've owned the 5300 as well as Carver, HK, Parasound, Citation, Denon amps in the past 2 years.

Strength:

detailed top to bottom, open sound-stage, great depth

Weakness:

none( but I do not like the on/off switch )

I am posting this as a follow-up review. This unit continues to impess me. If it is on the disc, you will hear it. I continue to listen to other players and have not yet heard a sub $5000. up-grade. Buy this. You can always return it if you don't like it. I aim to get another while they are still out there at $780. A rare value on today's audio market.

I first listened to the Adcom GCD-750 right after listening to a Rega Planet,a Class CDP .3, and a Sonic Frontiers $1600 player - whose model number escapes me at the moment. When the music started playing, I was stunned by the open, natural sound. This is an Adcom unit??? I double checked the connections to make sure the dealer wasn't pulling a fast one on me. While I've though previous Adcom CD players were decent values for the money, I've never regarded this line to be a contender for high-end status. With the introduction of the GCD-750, they are now.

I put the player through its paces with my standard set of CDs, which I've used to evaluate systems of up to $40K, speakers of up to $18K, and CD players of up to $10K. From having heard them through so many good quality systems, I've come to know these pieces well. And I have to say that the quality of sound produced by the GCD-750 was very good, even for a $3000 CD player. Frankly, I'd take this player straight up over a Krell 300i (a $3500 player).

Bass resolution was honest and tight, the midrange was open and airy, and the treble had good resolution and extension without any harshness. I listened to the unit played back through three different sets of speakers - the Hales Revelation 3, Vienna Acoustic Beethoven, and Sonus Faber Electa Amator. It sounded wonderful through each.

I don't own a GCD-750, as I am using $5000 of CD separates, but honestly if my home system were stolen and I had to buy a replacement system, I would give serious consideration to the 750, even if I had $3000-$4000 to spend on my CD source. At $1250, I consider this one of the best deals in the audio marketplace.

I don't own an Adcom GCD-750, but if I were in the market for a $1000-$1500CD player, this would be #1 on my list. I've listed to two different GCD-750s,
one on a system with $5500 speakers, and was blown away by its detail, resolution, imaging, and natural sound. I've listened to CD players and transports/DAC combinations ranging up to $10,000 and feel the Adcom is the
best price/performer I've heard to date. Never thought I'd be saying this about an Adcom product.

Strength:

AWESOME DYNAMIC RANGE, LARGE SOUNDSTAGE, DEEP,DETAILED BOTTOM END.

Weakness:

IF YOU LOVE THE SOUND OF WELL RECORDED CD'S, THIS PLAYER HAS
NO WEAKNESSES.

I HAVE OWNED THE 750 FOR 4 MONTHS. AFTER IT'S BREAK-IN
PERIOD IT IS SOUNDING GREAT.YOU COULD SPEND A LOT MORE
TO GET A SLIGHT IMPROVEMENT IN SOUND BUT THAT WILL NOT
ALWAYS BE THE CASE. LAYING DOWN MORE CASH DOES NOT GUARANTEE
BETTER AUDIO. I KNOW, I'VE BEEN THERE.
THE PREVIOUS REVIEWER STATED THE 750 SOUNDED SHRILL, CONFINED, AND NOT MUSICAL. I HAVE HEARD NONE OF THAT IN MY
SYSTEM WHICH INCLUDES A MCINTOSH AMP AND PRE-AMP ALONG WITH
B&W N-805'S W/ VELODYNE HGS-15 SUB.ALSO USING MONSTER 1000i
INTERCONNECTS ALL AROUND WITH MONSTER Z-2 BI-WIRE SPEAKER CABLE. INTERCONNECTS ANDSPEAKER WIRE DO MAKE A DIFFERENCE!!
THIS IS AN HONEST CD PLAYER; YOU WILL HEAR WHAT IS ON THE
CD...THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY. THE MASTERING QUALITY
ON MANY CD'S MAKE THEM IDEAL FOR DRINK COASTERS!
AS FOR ADCOM, THERE ELECTRONICS ARE MUCH BETTER THAN THERE
MECHANICS. THIS IS THE ONLY ADCOM PRODUCT I WILL EVER OWN.
I FIND THERE AMPS AND PRE-AMPS TO BE SHRILL SOUNDING AND
LACKING IN RESOLUTION. WHEN IT COMES TO REPRODUCING MUSIC
MAC AMPS AND PRE-AMPS HAVE NO PEER!!

I have sent a letter to Adcom expressing my problems with this player, the letter follows. If I receive a reply from Adcom, I will post a follow up.
_____________________________________________________________

Dear Sir or Madam:

I am writing to register a complaint regarding one of your products and the subsequent inability and/or lack of willingness on the part of your authorized reseller to address the problem.

I recently purchased a GCD-750 CD-Player. I've connected it with my other components in a "stack" configuration. My stack of components is about 15 feet away from a small, wall-mounted neon sculpture that I've had for many years. As it turns out, when the GCD-750 is placed within about 25 feet of the operating neon, none of the controls on the front of the unit function. The unit can still be operated using the remote control, however functions that can only be operated from the front panel don't work - such as the open/close button. After trying many combinations, including ensuring that the CD player and neon were running off of different electrical circuits, I have determined that the problem is one of proximity. Moving the CD player to another room fixes the problem.

This situation is very disappointing. I do not wish to redecorate my home or relocate my listening room because your CD player isn't properly insulated against normal interference. The other CD player in my stack doesn't have this problem nor do any of the other component in the stack. I'm currently auditioning other units to replace the Adcom, I'm pleased to report that of the three units I've brought home to audition, no other unit has the interference problems inherent with the Adcom.

The authorized Adcom dealer has been of very little help. In my area (San Diego), Adcom is only carried by what I would consider a "low-end" discount audio/video/home appliance/cellular telephone superstore -hardly the kind of place I would normally expect to carry quality audio gear. While they have been willing to let me try another GCD-750 unit to see if it has the same problem (it did), they are only willing to take the unit back for store credit - useless to me as I would never normally buy anything there. I used this store only for lack of alternative, not because I chose them for fine service or a good quality line.

I consider my purchase of your unit a sunk cost - I will no doubt be selling it on the used market. I am most disappointed in your product and representatives.

Strength:

great sound

Weakness:

dealer support and service

I was impressed when I first played this on my system. Almost 2 years later it crashed, so back to New Jersery for at least a month. I wasn't going thru the holidays without tunes and didn't have a DVD so I got a cheap Sony (NS300). My wife asked "if DVD's play cd's, why have the CD player? When she hears the DVD tonight, her question will be answered! The contrast is amazing. It's going to be a tough Christmas not listening to the GCD-750. It is so much fuller, detailed, and pleasant. I cannot overemphasize the contrast, it is HUGE.

Strength:

Very detailed without being harsh.

Weakness:

none.

I'll make it short and sweet. This is a great cd player. It is very detailed but to my ears it is not harsh sounding at all. I don't know what some of the other people here are commenting about, this is not a harsh sounding player. It could be the rest of the equipment they listened to it with. Very impressed with it, good job Adcom.

i got this player from a friend of mine who owned a pawn shop in south bay san diego. my cd player was broken buy my kids and the baby sitter. i got it for the 150 it was pawned for. now for all i know it came from the home boy shopping network. i plugged it in and i didn't like the sound. it was brite at the top. the bass was muddy. the mid and mid bass did sound smooth. i used acoustic research pro cables to hook it up analog out to amp to my old d-9 speakers. it ran very hot. as soon as i saw how hot it ran it was like nothing good can become of this. after 7 mounths it died and i gave it away to a friend of mine who was going over seas. he had it fixed (150 duckets) and he loved it. the build is very good. the display is atractive. the controls on the front are top notch. i found that it did not meat my musical tastes. and for 1200 no way! i would get my self a rega or one of those new tube 4000 by ah! if you are considering one of these make sure you audition a burnt in one!
