Strength:

Excellent sound, good build quality, tight bass, clear & smooth highs.

Weakness:

Remote volume control, LED display.

Excellent sound quality that works equally well with various types of music. Sound is very smooth and balanced. Compares favorably with other similarly-priced and higher priced players.

This will supplement my review in August 2001. This CD player sank on me in the end of April. Many things had gone wrong with it. The gold plate fell of during unpacking, what a bummer. Then 3-4 months later, it would just stop playing discs from time to time. Then the backlight on the display went. I thought enough was enough, so I e-mailed Adcom a not so nice message. I told them I was a loyal Adcom customer, and if they did not want to lose my business permantly, they would have to replace to repair my player. Three days later, the customer service manager called me at work and said, it is not policy, but they would replace my CD player on my first return to the repair center. He informed me that it was usually 3 times, and then a replacement. He said the day they received my player, they would send the new one. I sent it may 3rd, received the new one May 18th. I think that Adcom has done some quality upgrades to the GCD-750, and it does make a difference. The look and feel of the player seems better. I think Adcom's customer service did a great job!

This is to supplement the review I posted in August, 2001. This CD player went bye-bye. It started by occasionally not playing CD's. Then the orange backlight went out, but the LCD still worked. I had had enough. What was next? I e-mailed Adcom, a not too nice letter, stating that I was a loyal Adcom customer, and this CD player was expensive, and if they blew me off, I would torch them on this site. I said I didn't want a repair, I wanted a new player. The customer service manager called me at work, apologized for my problems, and said if I sent him my player, the day they received it, they would send a new out immediately. That was May 1st, and on May 18th, UPS delivered the new one. Although this new one is the same model, I think Adcom has made some real quality upgrades to the GCD-750. I could tell the minute I opened the box. This player seems 20% better than my previous player. The fit and finish seem much better. The player seems to sound the same, which is great. I think Adcom deserves a Kudos for this one.

I recently purchased the Adcom GCD-750 and I am quite happy with it's performance. I listened to an Adcom Gcd-700 for quite a while and it was also a solid piece, especially considering it was a changer! The 750, however, is a significant improvement in soundstage and depth over the GCD-700. Bass is better controlled, mids are much more present, and vocals are even better centered and have more depth. If you are in the market for a good changer, I suggest the Gcd-700. If you are in the market for a great-sounding single play, then give the Gcd-750 a listen.

Strength:

none that I can tell

Weakness:

display hard to read, open/close button stopped working on sample I tried

I heard this amp in a setup with Adcom gear as follows: GFA-5300 amp, GFP-750 pre, GCD-750 CD driving B&W N805s with nice interconnects, etc.

What I heard was, in a word, awful. I blame the tin-sounding, non-coherent sound on the electronics. No, I could not isolate the CD player from the rest of the the Adcom electronics. They stand and fall together since so many people buy their systems this way. After what I heard, I'll never own a piece of Adcom gear. Who can read the display anyway?

Strength:

Sound, sound sound. I love look of the on/off swith in its brass plate, goes well with the matching GFP-750 preamp.

Weakness:

Display. Remote cannot track forward into songs. In other words, nothing of importance.

"If it is on the CD you will hear it."

Joe, your review is spot-on. I love this unit. I was originally impressed with the GCD-700's transparency and detail, and now I am consistantly blown away by the GCD-750. The only reason I upgraded was in fear of the 700's tray mechanism someday failing on me like so many others, but the sound difference was immediately apparent. I am a detail freak, and for the $780 I paid the GCD-750 cannot be touched or compared in the $2000 and below range.

The only negative on the unit is how hard the display is to read from any angle except head-on. That's it. What a wonderful unit.

Strength:

wide soundstage, transparent vocals

Weakness:

detailed to the point of sounding analytical/mechanical

I can see how other people could love this particular player. It is a very transparent, crystal clear-sounding unit with excellent soundstaging, very good bass and clean midrange. However, if you are looking for a more "romantic" type of sound, this wouldn't be the ticket. Tube sounding this player isn't...it sounds very transistorized, mechanical, analytical.....you probably get the gist. I get the feeling of listening to the player, not the PLAYERS....

By the end of 1998 I was wiiling to update my digital front end, from transport/dac to single unit. My choice was ADCOM GCD-750. Good price, nice look(on photo), good specs. Fresh from the box it displayed it's authority in sound reprodu-
ction. Good bass, clear midrange, but highs were too bright, to my taste. After 3 weeks, highs were still, too bright, so I returned it to the store (thank GOD for 30-days money back guarantee). Next, came in Denon DCD 1650AR. It does everything ADCOM was doing good, plus it has better tonal balance (no bright highs), better low end extention, better micro dynamics. Also, it looks and feels like a million dollar. Having Denon you don't need HDCD. If, somebody likes bright highs, or his system lacks top octave, this player might be for him, otherwise Denon is the chice.
