Strength:

Very Reliable
Clear Sound in all Ranges

Weakness:

Lacks some Base

My receiver is not a 255R but a 251R (the 255's grandfather). The specs have not changed much, I'm sure.

I've had this amp for 8 years now, and it has run flawlessly. It's on virtually all the time. It is connected to 300$ speakers and produces quite amazing sound quality for the price. I've had people ohh and ahh at the sound. It's connected an AMAZING Pioneer ct-w616DR tape deck (I HIGHLY recommend this tape deck), a turntable, a hi-fi VCR and a computer. I can't even think of anything else to hook it up to. The sound is clear from all sources throughout the entire sound spectrum. Base is a bit lacking though (I've tried it on other speakers too), but for the price the quality/reliability can't be beat. I'm now an advocate for Pioneer ;)

I recently helped a friend on a limited budget select a music system as a gift for one of her friends. The budget was low, and the system was to be stereo only. I selected this receiver and an inexpensive CD changer, advising her to put the remainder of the money into the best speakers she could get.
After obtaining the receiver we brought it to my place and hooked it up to my THX-certified tower speakers (American-made Onkyo HTS-F2s, clones of the Atlantic Tech THX350s). We played some folk music and a little bit of rock. The sound was absolutely fine for a receiver of this price. The vocals and acoustic guitar on the folk CD (Uncle Bonsai, Wyn Ynd Wymyn) were warm, natural, and detailed. The rock and roll tracks sounded full and energetic -- they distintly lacked the cheapness I feared we might hear. Rest assured I'm very picky. The DACs in the cheap CD player we bought were nothing special (I'm used to my MSB Link!) but I think it's best to have a $100 CD player and $300 speakers, and not vice-versa. :)

Considering what I heard from this unit, I have to question the conclusions of those who felt what they were hearing just wasn't up to snuff. Anyway, reviewing amplifiers or receivers without specifying the other equipment involved, particularly speakers, is fairly meaningless. The speakers have the most to do with how a receiver will sound (barring, of course, truly horrific and under-powered amps which will made any speaker sound horrible).

Another note: The build quality is good. That should always be a consideration.

This is not an audiophile-grade receiver. But it is better than one would expect for the price, and a great starting place for someone on a budget, and probably the best of the alternatives at that price point. I can't imagine there's much better for $130-150 USD and so for =what this unit is= I'm giving it a 5.

Strength:

price. conveinience.

Weakness:

remote is just kinda bad. not "tweakable".

i first have to say i'm kinda rattled by some of the reviews on here...not the fact that their "bashing" my reciever, but that you justify nothing you say. as most of us were taught in english class, support your statement...ELABORATE...else you sound foolish.

I picked up the SX255R for 100 dollars at Best Buy this last x-mas. I was looking for an amp around 100-150 dollars, that could play the Radio, any component i wanted to hook up to it, and 2 speaker pairs. When i saw this on sale, i went and got it.

Now...(i can't recall his name above, but he pointed out:) that the SPEAKERS you use are what makes the sound. You people who say the reciever cannot produce good sounds...check your speakers.

I currently run a set of Bose 301 V's off them. The reciever is hooked into my computer to play my collection of mp3's. The reciever gives me NO "buzz" or "hum" when turned on and cranked up, so i know the sound is going to be clear. I just hooked up a 10" MTX subwoofer this weekend...with a box i built, and running that now. This sub is UNPOWERED, and run in the same channel as the Bose speakers, YET hits harder then imaginable when it's turned up loud. This amp makes plenty of power, and tight bass to make a very dynamic sound. On the "high" end, the Bose 301V's blew every speaker away i heard when it came to playing crisp clear highs. This reciever puts them out in good fashion...

The only negative point i have to make is that the unit has no EQ on it. However, as i run the unit from my computer, i use my factory installed sound card digital EQ, to control the sounds. I've got it tuned perfectly and love it.

So those of you who have bashed this reciever...your welcome to come here mine. It's not quite "audiophile quality"...but it's damn close.

Purchased this one at Best Buy for about $100. It's pretty basic, no frills, and the remote is a pain. There's nothing exceptional about this receiver at all, except for the price. It is not worth more than what I paid for it, and I simply use it in my office for background noise. It certainly has no power to speak of, and useless against anything more than "bookshelf" type speakers. The equalization is pretty bad, and the "super bass" is no real help. I use this to power a couple of JBL550's on my shelves -- pretty decent for that.
All in all, this is good for a single room for easy listening, but nothing more than that. Don't try this one on your surround system!!! ;)

This is an ideal entry level reciever that's perfect for somebody who is looking for a decent reciever and doesn't want to spend more than $150. I bought this for $130 from a J&R Music World catalogue and I'm quite satisfied. The bass is great on my system. I have custom speakers that have Pioneer 300W subs in them so that might have something to do with it. :-) Don't think that this has all of the bells and whistles of a better priced one, though. you pay for what you get, and this is a basic piece of equipment

This is a absolute basic reciever. Don't expect much and you won't be disapointed. Mine was free so I can't complain too much :)
Sound is blah at best, bass is horrid due to lack of clean power. Doesn't do too bad with vocals though, and mine has been 100% reliable so it makes a good "low end" stereo.

Strength:

Well... I am not an expert and picked this reciever up for 150 bucks which isn't that bad. It puts out some good bass and the highs are pretty good.

Weakness:

Not good for surround sound and kinda weak but i am using 2 JBL Cf-100 speakers with the set up and i think the amp is too weak to handle them.

Overall this amp isn't too bad. But alittle weak so I am going to get some studio monitor speakers that are less powerfull and see if they sound better with this reciever. As for the price, it isn't THAT bad but it is true that you pay for what you get in this case.
