Strength:

Power(100 Wattsx2, at 8 Ohms), superb sound quality.

Weakness:

Remote, fan.
Foolish and low quality remote control which you can only control tuner section and volume level of your receiver if you don't have a nakamichi CD-player or cassette deck. I would expect a universal, learning remote like most of onkyo receivers in the market.
The fan: I still can not understand the use of a cooling fan in such an instrument instead of a heatsink. It makes noise especially heard at low volumes.

I bought this RE-10 after I returned my Onkyo TX-DS 575 receiver because of its awful stereo performance. RE-10 sounds really clear. Beneath its simple look, it has almost every control and connectivity option that you would expect from a stereo receiver. Its tone controls and loudness switch really works by boosting highs and lows even at low volumes, making listening to music at all volume levels enjoyable. The sound quality is comparable and even superior to any HI-FI amplifier or receiver in the same price range. If great stereo performance, tuner and satisfactory power (like 100 watts per channel AT 8ohms) at a reasonable price is what you're after, RE-10 would be the choice.

Strength:

Good value (paid $450 at Harvey), gobs of power, shows the weaknesses of my speakers and even CD sources!

Weakness:

Cheesey remote control, OK the fan

I would not feel compelled to write this review if it were not for the *FAN* issues which many of your past reviews mentioned.

Not that the RE-10 doesn't impress me -- because it does very much in its sonic quality and punch.

The bottom line on the fan, IMHO, is if you meet one of the following criteria, consider a different receiver:
1) Classical music is your passion and main listening program / format
2) You do not have an enclosed audio stand/rack or other piece of furniture which is enclosed (from the front).
3) Your receiver due to room layout, etc. is <= 10ft away from your primary listening position.

The fan doesn't bother me for pop/rock/funk/jazz whatever I listen to! Again, please appreciate this quality you're getting @ $599US list price / $499 street.

However at extremely low passages, and when nothing is playing I can hear the fan clearly. This is a design flaw I intend to buy a small audio enclosure to fix this simple problem, and at least she doesn't seem to run too hot...!

Strength:

SIMPLE STRAIGHT FORWARD DESIGN, LOUDNESS CIRCUIT EXCELLENT THE BEST STEREO RECEIVER I'VE HEARD IN YEARS!

Weakness:

NO PHONO STAGE, DOES ANYONE LISTEN TO VINYL ANYMORE? CAN YOU SAY "TWENTY FIRST CENTURY"!

I RECENTLY HAD THE MONEY TO UPGRADE MY STEREO SYSTEM, THANKYOU UNCLE SAM. I WAS LOOKING FOR A STEREO RECEIVER WITH SOME GOOD POWER AND DESIREABLE FEATURES. THE ONLY TWO RECEIVERS IN MY PRICE RANGE THAT I LISTENED TO, TWO CHANNEL, WERE THE NAK. RE-10 AND A NEW YAMAHA TOP ART RECEIVER.
I HAVE A GOOD SUB-WOOFER, VELODYNE CT-100, SO LOW END WAS NOT A MAJOR CONSIDERATION. THE RE-10 WAS THE CLEAR WINNER. SPACE IS A LUXURY I DON'T HAVE SO THE FAN IS A PLUS. I HAD TO PUT MY CD CHANGER ON TOP OF THE RECEIVER, WOULD'NT DO THAT WITH THE YAMAHA. THE LOUDNESS CIRCUIT IN THE RE-10 REALLY WORKS TO BOOST THE HIGHS AND LOWS.
I AM A FIRM BELIEVER IN THE K.I.S.S. PRINCIPLE, " KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID". WHICH NAKAMICHI DID. IF YOU ARE IN THE MARKET FOR A GOOD STEREO RECEIVER, CHECK OUT THE NAK. RE-10 I DON'T THINK YOU WILL BE DIAPPOINTED.
OH, OTHER STUFF, DENON DCM-370 CD CHANGER, KEF Q-15 MAIN SPEAKERS.

Strength:

I thought the Rotel RA-971 was great for $500, but this baby takes the cake. I've found my new budget amp.

Strength:

hi-po/hi-current/wide bandwith/video switching/sub out/discrete output/3 yr warr./heft(23 lbs.)

Weakness:

fan noise at idle/remote vol.hard to modulate at low levels

Purchased aprox. two years ago for bedroom system. Compared to NAD C740, the RE-10 had more power, video switching(we watch tivo in bed), sub output, three vs. two year warr., as well as weighing 5 lbs. more. The sound with Magge SMGa's(audiophile best buys)is wide, full, open and airy. TV,talk radio(Stern),rock(Zappa-Floyd),classical(pipe organ), all sound full and natural. Did not want to pay for separates for secondary system, but am not disappointed. One problem though, the fan should power down at idle. I like to leave electronics powered all the time, but I do not want to run the fan constantly. Other than that a fine alternative to separates for a small system.

Strength:

- lots and lots of power

Weakness:

- cheap feeling speaker connectors
- very basic remote

In a world of AV amps it seems like there are not that many choices left for stereo music listening. I would have preferred to get a good AV receiver but found I would have had to spend well over $1500 to get a AV receiver capable of providing the same level of power and detail to my 6 ohm speakers - which makes good stereo hardware, in comparison, a relative bargain for this application.

Compared to similar products from Denon, Marantz, Cambridge and Yamaha. It can't compare to audiophile products from Rotel, etc. but it sounds awesome for $428 US ( $680 in Canadian dollars). It has great power. The bass coming out of my speakers doubled, with tone controls zeroed, compared with my previous 100 watt amp.

The fan has not been an issue so far. The fact there are no cooling slots on the top has been a bonus - I can stack my CD player on top.

The FM tuner is only mediocre as is the remote. Competing products in this price range had similar issues.

Compared to my previous amp, the treble seems slightly less "bright" but it has lots of power which is apparent the bass response from my speakers. No popping, hums or other weird noises.

The AV hook-ups are a really nice feature.

I'm giving it a 5 in the value rating, and a 4 in the overall rating as there are better sounding products out there, like Rotel, but they cost more.

Strength:

Fine sound; Music really comes out; The fan is a quiet as can be.....have not heard it at all;
In fact, the unit has a built in thermostat which controls the fan function; so the fan is NOT on all the time as one of your reviewers seems to think......

Weakness:

buttons on the remote should be color coded and/or different shapes; should be ergonomically correct;

No complaints except for the aforementioned remote control.

It is curious that the manual says nothing about the fan.....nor is the an explanation about the difference between preset and stations in memory.........

there is no date of manufacture on the unit......have already e-mailed Nakamichi for that.......

Strength:

40AMP's of Peak Power Current (i.e., 20AMP's per channel) two channel driven 20HZ-20KHz

Weakness:

Remote control should be improved

I was searching for integrated amplifier and/or receiver with clean 100W/8Ohm both channel driven. I've found many on the market, however the most important think is that RE-10 have capability of 40AMP's of current peak (i.e., 20AMP's per channel) and in this class you can find only Musical Fidelity to have dynamic power reserve equivalent to Nakamichi's receivers at more higher price. Excellent audio quality of RE-10. I really recommend this 2-channel stereo receiver for serious musical lowers without paying astronomical price! No problem in driving difficult speaker loads 6 or 4OHM impedance even two pairs!, thanks to 40AMP's of peak power current.
